Kikuichimoji wrote:For all you guys comparing the mAh of this battery pack to the batteries in your laptops, please keep in mind that this is rated 8000 mAh AT FIVE VOLTS. 8000mAh @ 5V = 40Wh of power.

Your laptop batteries, while only 4800mAh, are rated at 12 or even 19 volts. 4800mAh @ 19V is 91.2Wh, which is quite a bit more juice than 40wH.

Sooo, don't go thinking this will be a good replacement. You could certainly give a netbook a bit of extra juice with this pack, but I wouldn't try running it on high brightness or anything. Maybe charging the netbook/laptop while the power is off (voltage is correct, just not enough amperage to power an active full-size laptop).

Not trying to step on any toes. Just givin some free edumaction.

Thanks. FYI, I've seen replacement battery for my laptop (not Sony, but third-party, claims to hold 15% more juice) for about $80 or so. So OEM batteries are probably the better way to go if you want to add juice to computers.

I guess this thing can be slipped into a cargo pants pocket as some sort of a backup for smaller devices, like smartphones, MP3 players, and whatnot.

Bought the bigger version last year and added the WI12 adapter that outputs a regulated 12 volts. Wired that into a cigarette lighter socket and voila... a 12 volt power supply that you can plug a lot more stuff into. The WI12 will cost you $11.90 if you register with their tip service.

I bought it last time. I don't have an iPad, but it came with a special iPad adapter that was packaged separately from the rest of the adapters.

It will power a stun gun quite handily and for quite a while. Not so good for your blender as it is a bit greedy with current and voltage whereas the stun gun uses a relatively low current at very high voltages.

There is no document on the website confirming 8000mAh@5VDC or the WattHrs. They just say 8000mAh. The Energizer customer service rep didn't know the internal voltage, and the tech was "in a meeting". I'm waiting for a call back letting me know the actual power stored in the device.

8Amps@19VDC, I'll buy 3!
8Amps@5VDC: I buy 1!
8Amps@3.7VDC: I'll pass; I can do that with a D-Cell.

From the item page:

Rated Output: DC 5V~1000mA; DC 12V~2000mA; DC 19V~2000mA

You can indeed confirm this at the Product Website by clicking "specs" at the upper right (or by looking at the end of the manual.

Can someone explain the purpose of the iPad tip? It looks like it's turning a USB port into a... USB port.

Why don't I just plug my iPad sync cable into the battery pack's USB port?

Because it won't work. The iPad requires a proprietary connector. Read here under "No USB port.":

"The iPad will sync itself via USB — but only when plugged in via its proprietary dock connector. That means there will be no direct attachment of all umpteen USB peripherals you already own."

The tip solves this problem.

I'm not sure. I'm a big Asimov fan, and I believe I've read all of his robot stories and novels, yet the Woot blog doesn't really remind me of them much (except perhaps for the "employment deletion squads" at the end). The again, maybe it's just that the admittedly talented Woot writer has a very different style than our hero did.

But no Susan Calvin? 3 laws? R. Daneel Olivaw? R. anything?

I don't think you understood what I was asking. I know the iPad doesn't have a USB port. But at the other end of the sync cable from that proprietary connector is a USB plug. It goes into a computer's USB port, or the USB port of the wall charger for that comes with the iPad.

My question is why I need to use the iPad "tip", when the picutre of it clearly shows it just turns a female USB port into another female USB port. My not cut out the middleman?

I've been trying to acquire/build a cheap battery pack that will extend the life of my iPhone 3GS for a couple months now with no success (they charge other things, but not my iPhone. Thanks Apple). A bare 9 amp 3.6v lithium battery goes for a little over $30, and that's before any protection circuits or special iPhone compatibility circuitry.

And yes, I've tried the resistor hack for non-iPhone chargers AND the special USB adapter (worthless) for non-iPhone chargers. Neither worked for me.

Finally... Thanks for a decently priced battery pack, Woot

Monoprice.com has a great, cheap 3gs battery pack/case.

Actually, a second battery for a dell netbook looked to be like 80 bucks. Considering the computer was 100 (with a purchase of a regular computer), and probably not much more than 2 bills normally, I feel like 80 is too much. Anyway, that battery is dead as I didn't use the netbook much but a friend might be able to. Do you know if this charger will work as a battery for a computer that doesn't have one? Thanks!

KGary231 wrote:Well there should be an easy way to switch between high performance and battery saving quite easily. I know all asus netbooks have their own software that does this which you can also control manually. However I agree that something like this will not give you a full battery charge and may not be the best option if you need a lot of computer time without an outlet. If you are using a netbook it should be cheap to buy a 2nd OEM battery anyway.

Tread with care, just because it's new doesn't mean you're going to get full life out of it. I bought a power pack from Woot for my Zune (ok, I hear the snickering) but the point is, it only lasted 6 recharges. Rechargeable batteries' capacity deteriorates over time, used or not. While my unit is still covered under the factory 3 year warranty, they will not repair or replace the unit, they won't even refund my money. They'll give me a discount coupon to buy some Carp from their website. Die, Belkin, die.
