Here's the product page with a nice video description of the scanner... offered for $200 too! Again, Woot's got a deal here...assuming you have a use such a scanner.

As a warning, when they say "PC ONLY", they mean "PC ONLY".

You can't download the Mac software - they expect you to purchase a "Mac Version" of the hardware to get the Mac software.

Or, you can buy it for $80.

Yes, $80. Not joking. http://store.neatco.com/ - scroll down to NeatWorks for Mac.

The reviews for these types of things are just 'so-so' on Buzzilions.

I do a daily woot blog where I talk about the woot, link to CSEs, find reviews, etc. A few people have told me it's useful. Google "useful linkage" and there it is.

maybe i'm not as much of a techie as i think i am...but i'm not a spy, so a portable scanner really isn't in my list of must haves

I see that they have a Mac version, and the manufacturers website even suggests that the only difference between the two is the software.

None the less, this isn't the Mac version, and I'm assuming I can't get the software separately?

Is anyone familiar with the software it comes with? Is it useful?

Does it do business cards too?

How about OCR? I would like to make a wallpaper sized print of my Woot! receipts.

I'd also really like to know if this thing will do duplex scanning.

Does it create a paradox when you scan its own receipt?

Is this a good solution to scanning home receipts, letter size receipts from invoices etc? The amount of paperwork we get is ridiculous. I'd love to throw away all the receipts, but I guess stores still need the originals? Grr

I've got this, and it's fantastic. The software gets a little cranky when I've got a couple hundred items that I've scanned but haven't filed yet, but there's a remote possibility that might be my fault.

The scanner feeds well, but sometimes gets stuck on paper with a crease. Fold the paper the other way or pull it through gently and the problem is solved.

The software is useful. It will auto-detect what you're scanning and figure out if it's a receipt, business card, or document. Accuracy here is about 90%, and it's easy to move items from one category to another. Once something is scanned into your inbox, you review the item if you like, update fields like vendor or dollar amounts, categorize for taxes, and file.

The only thing I don't like about it is that when backing up, the software exports the data and then zips the files. That's great, but I decided to scan my grandmother's recipe cards so I could index them and share them with a cousin, but I've got so many cards that the backup file was suddenly too large to zip. I had to export the recipes and delete them from the database in order to be able to do a backup.

Neat is a POS company... I bought one of their scanners like this a while back and it came without any software. I emailed them 4-5 times and they would never get back to me once I told them I did not get a software CD.

I to this day have yet to be able to use the product, and it just sits on my shelf collecting dust.

I've seen these in action and they scan large numbers of receipts painfully slow.

I work with people who travel with receipt scanners to every location they work in. If you need it for convenience of travel, be willing to trade compact design for speed. If you have a large number of pages of receipts to scan, this doesn't get it done fast enough for me.

With a few minor alterations, you can covert it to this...

Actually, as mentioned in the video this looks very handy come tax time! Apparently with the included software you can develop a little database of your scanned receipts and such and categorize, spreadsheet, or summarize them as needed.

Very handy!

Plus, if you get audited by the IRS anyway, you can just blame it on the NR4!

It does not do duplex scanning, according to the manufacterer's website:

NeatCo wrote:The NeatReceipts scanner is a mobile scanner powered and connected via USB. It is a sheetfed scanner, which means it takes one piece of paper at a time. It scans one side of a page at a time, also known as simplex scanning. It weighs less than a pound, so is easy to travel with. The speed of scanning is 4 pages per minute.

Asked NeatCo Support about Mac compatibility and also got this answer:

If the serial number begins with 574P, you will be able to use the scanner on both Mac and PC. If the Serial Number starts with CN, the scanner is PC only.

I can't do duplex with mine, but I can do multi-page. Scan page one, flip it over and scan page two. Not as efficient as I'd like, but it gets the job done.

Business cards scan with no problem. There is a setting that can be made to scan two sides to a card an include it in the same record but it requires two separate passes (scans).

That's part of the equation for this type of scanner, the portability. Some need it some don't. The other part would be the software.

If the software works as they say it well from scanner > software > spread sheet, with no manual entry the folks that run a small business or file long form might be interested in this.

I have a flat bed scanner (canon) and the software works OK, but doesn't have the automatic export to spread sheet feature. I'm going to look around at the software reviews and see if most like it before I pull the trigger.

The scanner itself is identical in the PC or Mac version. Just the software if different. Unfortunately, the scanner doesn't seem to work with any other mac software (it's not twain compliant and seems to have custom drivers). So while technically the hardware is mac compatible unless you have the software to go with it, it's a mac paperweight. And not a very heavy one at that.

Will a manufacturer or the IRS for that matter honor a scanned receipt for validation or do we still need to keep the original receipt?

That's usually a function of the dpi. The more dpi, the slower a scanner runs to catch everything. I have an older sheet fed scanner and 300 dpi works fine for pdf creation and recognition. A full sheet goes through mine in about 4 seconds. Any more resolution just makes huge files, slow scans but no better OCR recognition.

Since I don't have any fancy software that does what NR does, I've wanted one of these for a while to sort my home, work and rental receipts.

The IRS will, but manufacturers will differ depending on who it is. They should, but there's no telling sometimes.

The IRS tends to like Originals. I'm not an accountant, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night

That's odd, I have the 2.0 version of this scanner, and it's TWAIN compliant, I use it all the time outside of the Neat Receipts software.

I wonder if they changed it between versions and why?

Sounds like a good idea, but whom in the world REALLY makes copies of all their receipts... I mean geez... just file them in a big plastic bag.

Just got off the phone with a friend that has the desk version of this. He said he loves the software on this and uses it all the time.

Guess I'll have to get one.
