Will this work with TVersity? Do I even want to use TVersity? Will the included software stream content from my PC? How well does it rewind?

Please don't delete this post, I am trying, honest!

ttcarter wrote:I bought one of these for my mom so she could watch Netflix instantly. The remote is so simple and uncomplicated that she was watching a movie before I got halfway through showing her how to use it! LOL

Once the box is set up and activated (which takes a while), you can browse the movies in Netflix Watch Instantly, add or remove movies from your queue, and watch them. It's wifi and the range is really good. The video quality is very good on most of the movies and I like being able to click forward and backward almost frame by frame in a movie. It's HD, but only 720p. I'm pleased to see there will be a free firmware upgrade to full HD sometime this year.

I have a Wii, an XBox 360 and a PS3 and prior to getting the Roku, I used them to watch Netflix on TV. They worked fine but I gotta say, I like the Roku remote so much that I always opt to use it. (No more finding my glasses and turning on a light to try and find the Pause button.)

Or, you could just tap A twice on your 360 controller...and you don't even have to look at it.

I'm not seeing how a flat controller is easier..just thought I'd say that.

Pull a trigger to fast forward, tap a button to pause, etc.

Simple and faster

Sounds like it does what is claims, but not needed for Netflix if you already stream Netflix content through your game system.

As a side note, Netflix is currently working to include subtitle features for their streaming content.

Is it possible to use this to stream music (primarily MP3 and FLAC) from a file server? I have my music collection on Windows Home Server and am looking for an inexpensive way to get it to the living room stereo.

I have one and use 3 mbps DSL. It works perfectly. It will work below 3 mbps but not as well. When you use it, Netflix checks your speed and gives you a picture quality based on that check. I found 3 mbps and above gets you the highest video quality they offer.

I use TVersity media server to stream all my movies and music to my PS3 in the living room. Will this do the same on another TV? I have many files in AVI and MPG format, and it's pretty much the only thing I want to do is stream them to the bedroom from my PC. Will this work for that?

I'm having no luck researching this myself - so here goes ... Would this work on 110/220v and stream PAL as well as NTSC?

I don't give a flying monkey poo about Netflix or any paid subscription service.

Does this play media that is on my PC?

My dvd player plays divx and mpg via disc or USB.

I am trying to justify a purchase of this. Not sure if I can.

got one of these from Roku a while back...and paid a LOT more. Great little box. I have Netflix streaming from my Wii and a Sony DVD player, and Roku is by far superior. Well worth the investment!

I'm still looking for a clear answer on why people with a PS3 should by this.

Other questions: for all the 'ease of use', setting up a wireless connection for a non-technical household isn't trivial, how easy can that part be to buy this for someone?

How available are regular cable channels from comedy central HD to Trutv HD with this?

Better than my computer at streaming Netflix. I've had the Roku about a month and only had to wait through one pause so far instead of the one-to-three pauses per movie on my computer.

However, Im interested in being able to play my PC games on my big screen as opposed to just watching video content.

Will this allow me to do that?

In a word, no. This will only stream "channels" that have been programmed using Roku's API. Depending on your computer, you could do what you're asking with an HDMI cable or some other combination of AV hookups.

goodgood wrote:Wrong. All plans are the same in regards to number of devices watching Netflix streams.
The difference is the number of DVD's you can check out at the same time.

Wrong. All plans allow up to 6 devices associated with your account, but you are limited to how many simultaneous streams based on your DVD plan.

http://www.netflix.com/Help?action=2&jsEnabled=false&faqtrkid=5&p_faqid=2902&lnkctr=yas_faq&p_search_text=simultaneous

Q:Can I watch movies instantly on more than one PC or Netflix ready device?

A:Some membership plans allow you to watch simultaneously on more than one personal computer or Netflix ready device at the same time. If you are on the 1 disc out at-a-time plan, you may watch only one device at a time. If you are on the 2 discs out at-a-time plan, you may watch on up to two devices at the same time. Members on the 3 disc plan can watch on up to three devices. The maximum is four devices simultaneously, and that is available for members on the 4 or greater discs out at-a-time plans.
Please keep in mind that your account can have up to six unique authorized devices activated (associated with the account) at any given time, including personal computers and Netflix ready devices. This is due to requirements from content providers. To activate a device or see your currently activated devices, visit Your Account and click on the link to .
For example: If you are on the 1 disc plan, you can have up to six devices associated with your account, but can only watch one of them at a time. If you are on the 2 disc plan, you can have up to six devices activated, but can only watch two of them at the same time.

Many people have reported success with 2 streams on the 1-DVD plan. This was allowed by Netflix b/c in the past sometimes the clients (or servers) did not properly "release" a stream after it is watched. This caused people to see error messages after playing one stream and trying to play another. I'm not sure if that bug has been resolved. If it has, netflix could change back to 1 stream for the 1 DVD plan at any time per its Terms of Use.

Read this:

It's not a Western Digital Media Player. Apparently this thing ONLY streams internet stuff and can't do anything locally (unless you pay more for a separate Roku media server - ugh).

i'd comment that i'm in the midst of some house construction that required me to drop my nice cable modem, for a cruddy DSL connection that's testing out at right below a meg, most of the time (as i live in a rural area, and am probably at the edge of the DSL solar system in my area).
...anyway...
i use my HD Roku on that REALLY CRAPPY DSL connection, and it still works. i do see some image dithering/times where resolution drops...but it's still watchable. while i wouldn't recommend running Roku at this low of a speed, it does still work...so at 3Meg, it should be fine (although, i'd check the forums to see what they say about minimums to ensure you are able to harness the full HD quality).
hope this helps?

I used it at that speed when I first got it. The Roku player gives you four dots to indicate quality. 4 dots is excellent, DVD quality, and 1 dot is poor. On 3 Megs I usually got 2 dots minimum, and more often 3-4. If you are on a wireless connection, make sure it's strong enough. If you're plugged directly into the box, you should be getting 4 or 3 at the least. I only had 2 because my wireless connection was strained with slow bandwidth. Even at two, I still watched it and was happy with the quality.
FYI: Our family ignored cable and use this box and Netflix instant watch as our only source of TV in our home and we love it.

it will work at 1meg...but the image quality will have dropped. additionally, sometimes searches for movies might take 10-15 seconds on such a slow connection...but it is usable at 1meg.

    Just a note for everyone.

    http://www.roku.com/contest/default

Roku just completed accepting entries for its developer contest. The channels submitted for the contest are going to be published today. Since there were prizes of $5k involved, it is expected that there will be a decent number of new channels published today. I can't comment on the quality of channels, since I haven't seen them yet. But I'd imagine there should be at least a few good ones.

I've got DSL and my speed is around 1.7Mbps since I live out in the country and all my stream look otterific using the Roku. Although I'm not really able to stream my Netflix at HD quality the picture is still about DVD quality.
Overall the Roku box is otterific! I've got some of the main channels like Netflix and Pandora, but unlike the new Apple TV Roku lets you add private channels when you sign up to be a developer.
