For those of you who might not be "in the know," there's some rather huge video game news brewing today. Something I'm sure we can all agree will be eating away the hours of our lives for the next year or so at least. Of course I'm talking about-

What? Halo Reach? Oh, is that out already? I don't really care, but you go have fun. I'm talking about Civilization 5...

First of all, I think it's adorable that you're so excited about your little Halo game with your cute guns and adorable aliens; that's neat. Really. If you need me, though, I'll be leading an entire civilization from the Stone Age to the Space Age, thanks. Oh, wow, you get to run AND shoot? That must be tough to manage to do at the same time! I'll be exploring a uniquely-crafted world, building and managing cities, seeking out resources, navigating trade routes and diplomacy all while forging an army to take care of any gung-ho leaders who think they like the look of my uranium deposits.

Wow, you get a Deathmatch! How innovative! I can only think of 20 or 30 other FPS games offering such a unique game mode! Maybe there's even a flag for you to capture! Let's see, I can win a game through war, culture and trade, diplomacy, completing the space race, or completing the Utopia Project. But you have fun with that incredible "shoot everything and win" game mode. That sounds fun...for you.

And you can stay up all night playing "marathon" Halo matches if you like, but I can play all night and not even complete one game. Turn-based strategy of this complexity requires time; it requires a LOT of time.

Come to think of it I'm not sure that's a win in my column. Oh well, either way I'm going to see a lot less sunlight starting next Tuesday!

Now you know what we'll be busy playing. Got a better game? Willing to challenge us in empire building? Wanna plug your "totes awesome cave" in Minecraft? Let us know in the comments below.

Can I have your babies? Or you have mine? I'm not sure how this thing works. Lets just get this done.

Already pre-ordered! Can't wait. I will say, I'm going to miss building stacks o'doom... hopefully the new system pans out! They haven't lead me astray yet though.

Thankfully (?) its not available for OSX; at least not yet. So no time wasting for me... Hmm.

Yeah i'll be busy jetpack-jumping, frag-grenading, no-scoping, sword-lunging, tea-bagging, newb-pwning and kill-spreeing while you wait patiently for your fun game in which you get to wait patiently for your turn. Have fun exploring the vast world of hexagons and diplomacy!

The woot staff is probably just worried because playing Halo makes us better decision makers and their woot-off sales will suffer as a consequence of our improved judgment.
Haven't you seen the latest study?

That actually pretty much describes company game night, just without Halo.

Did you know shirt.woot ships internationally? Get you some!

So how is this any different than all the other RTS games out there? Your description sounds a lot like Spore, and we all know how that turned out...

Dwarf Fortress FTW. I'm almost ready to pump magma 30 levels up to my main fortress; all I need are a few more windwills to provide power...

The game that I enjoy playing is far superior to the game you like.

um...
1 - it isn't RTS.
2 - its Sid Meiers, Man! his games from the 90s still have "replayability" (Civ II FTW)
3 - Comparing any Civ game to Spore is like comparing the X-Box to the Wii.

I don't know how you got "Spore" out of any of that, but no. It'll be nothing like Spore. And that's a very good thing.

Between the two of us and this bottle of wine I'm sure we can figure it out.

I'll admit a little bias here, but check this out. A CIV game beating out Halo for most anticipated!

FWIW, I'm downloading Civ V right now from Steam... pre-download is available now, with the game being activated next week on release date.

After loosing about 6 months of my life, I've successfully convinced myself that this "Civilization" game is a hallucination. Otherwise, I would NEVER leave my house, go to work, go get groceries, take care of my child...you know live my life.

Those 6 months were extremely enjoyable, though. Luckily, I was between jobs at the time, so I didn't loose too much lol.

A new Civilization game...yup...I'm going with "it's all in your imagination"

The next time I need to decide which way random dots are moving I'll go get a HALO player.

You tell 'em. We don't need games that can be won, losing is all we need! Now, if you will excuse me, I need to get back to the mines. We need more iron and steel before those pesky elves and goblins show up again.

Xcom - UFO Defense. Classic Microprose Strategy gaming. That is all... But if you need a Good FPS, Then you need Wolfenstein from Id Software... 1992

I would disagree with you... but really I can't. I love Civ. Its amazing on a ton of levels. I feel like I've barely even scratched the surface, playing week-long games of Civ IV. I just don't thikn my wallet can handle Civ 5 right now. Tragic, really.

Good thing strategy games don't usually appeal to women, or we'd have a lot more of these:

I'm one of those people who is getting both! Reach arrived yesterday; I preordered it for the exclusives. I'm debating whether to preorder Civ 5 or not. I have Civ 4 and love it, so I'll probably get Civ 5 eventually. I actually just realized, a map pack for a Civ game? What happened to randomly generated maps?

I don't really have any response to this, it just bears repeating

"Meier" doesn't have an 'S' on the end.

heh, I still have Civilization, the Avalon Hill board game. Not as much fun to play alone of course, and maybe not even with only 3 people.

computerwise, I think I'm still on Civ 2, with the expansion pack. I didn't care for Call to Power as much.

I figured that subsequent Civ's were just a matter of better graphics, but is the game play any better?

Come on now, it's not fair to lump console FPS games together with PC FPS games. I have love for strategy games as well as ->PC<- FPS games. I miss the days when I'd be up all night playing multi-hour Age of Empires II multiplayer matches.

I just played this game for two days straight. I then deleted it. No, it wasn't that it was bad. It was freagin' otterific. The problem was that IT SUCKED MY SOUL AWAY. Civilization has been like a drug to me ever since the first installment, and I'm finally learning to "Just say no." This game is great, but it will suck away your time, into the wee hours of the morning, when you finally realize that it's 4:00 AM, and you have to get up in three hours.

Why didn't they include a clock in this version, like the last one? Civ IV had a clock with a damn alarm function, built in to the game! I actually used a real time clock, in a game! Now whether or not I could convince myself to stop playing, or take "just one more turn" was a different matter. The point is that it was there, and it was helpful... some times.
