Can anyone tell me if this Cisco will work with the HD Roku. Do you need anything like a card or something else to make it work.

Thanks, BART

I have one of these and put DD-WRT on it and it works great.

This router is horrible. I've had it now for about 8 months. Through one floor of my house directly adjacent I get 1 and if I am SUPER lucky 2 bars -- that constantly drop and work intermittently. Tried all solutions I could find except DD-WRT so I might look into that one day. Spend the extra and get a WRT54G instead.

While this specific model is not listed on Roku's compatibility page, its sister (without the "S") is, and I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Have you tried other routers and had different results? I.e. is it the router's fault, or is there a lot of metal between the 2 locations?

I've had trouble with one room in my house, and with 2 different brands of routers. Everywhere else is fine.

I got one of these from Buy.com back in Dec. 2009 for $25.99 shipped. I have had no complaints. We aren't gamers but there can be 3 computers surfing while streaming video to the HTPC (some wired, some wireless) with no problems.

Can someone explain how DD-WRT works with bridge mode? do you need two DD-WRT flashed routers or just two routers but only (the remote one) flashed with DD-WRT?

Only the router you want to setup as an access point / bridge needs ddwrt. unless you specifically purchase an access point, which can be quite expensive.

Once you flash the ddwrt onto a router and set it up in bridge mode, just make sure it's setup with the same subnet and ip range and you're pretty much good to go. the dd-wrt website has some tutorials if you run into problems. http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index

There are multiple ways to bridge, but the most common basically turns the router into a wireless client and "bridges" the connection as if you plugged in a separate switch to your primary router.

You only need the bridge (remote) router to run DD-WRT and can use it with any B/G compatible router to establish the link to the rest of your network.

Fork501 wrote:I had this exact router and, about a week ago, threw it over the balcony and went back to the old WRT54G.

In my opinion, this is the worst router I've ever owned. It dropped my wireless connection every night at about 10:00 and would continue to do so every 15 minutes or so, until the next morning. I tried changing cables, moving its location and even turning it off when it was not in use, but nothing ever remedied it. It went on like this for about a year.

I went to the Linksys website, but they don't even mention this router as being an available router of theirs.

If you purchase this, expect that there will be no product support available, no firmware will ever be published and you will honestly get what you paid for.

UFGatorHawk wrote:How about Hayes 300bps?

For those unfamiliar, it is equivalent to a scorching .3K of data transmitting power.

Calling BBSs, most could read faster than it could send/receive data.

You could actually watch the 'carrier' moving across the screen, filling in the words, character by character.

Woah... woah... woah... Slow down. No need to move quite so fast!

And just to clarify for everyone, that 300bps modem gives you a whole 300 bits per second, which is actually only 37.5 bytes.

At optimal speed, it would take over 10 hours to download the entire contents of a 3.5" 1.44 MB floppy.

Moore's law strikes again.

Splicer1 wrote:And you are limiting your thinking to "modulates an analog signal into a digital one (and the reverse)" which is just wrong. A modulator takes a signal (in this case a DIGITAL signal, the cable co only operates its ISP in Digital mode), DEMODULATES said signal and MODULATES on a frequency that works with ones computer.

A modem, while being able to be used in analog, in and of itself is NOT specifically related to 'analog'.

OK, I get the point from everybody. I went to school before either DSL or cable modems, and was told that the "modem" part was converting to/from audio signals. Not just analog, but audio specifically. Apparently that was incorrect.

don't let the rebranding fool you. this is not a Cisco device. its a very mediocre linksys device. it does not run Cisco ios ... nothing being sold for $17 is going to be able to run IOS.

$17 is enough to get you a decent meal and a couple beers at a brew pub. think about whether that's all you want to spend on the primary gateway between your home and the wide open internet.

Other than in manufacturing quality, configuration options, etc, no. Same idea, competing technologies. Again, like K56flex vs X2. Same max speed, same upload speed -- and in this case, even the same way of getting there -- but not compatible between brands.

I had a problem using the coupon but it turned out that the email had been sent to an account I created a few years ago. I forgot about it and created a new one with a different user name. I tried logging in and purchasing with the new one but the coupon (naturally) wouldn't work.

Once I logged in with the old one, which is the one the coupon code was sent to, it worked fine. Whew ... I could have just said, "Check that the user who received the code is the same one using it!"

As a matter of fact, if you do go into the web based config it looks exactly like the original LinkSys config screen. The (not so) pretty blue and black with simple/basic navigation. You cannot tell from the config screen whether you are using the 'new' black UFO style router or the old building block style router...

(Of course by versions and such you can... My point was it does not have a 'Cisco' feel)

This device is made by Cisco. Think low-end Chevrolet vs Cadillac. Same manufacturer, different features. Items standard on the lowest model of one aren't even available on the other. But it's still the same company.

thanks for the replies! just a few more questions and i'll be able to decide on buying one or more of these things. Hope its not to many things to ask.

can you have more than one DD-WRT flashed router active and is there a limit to how many? I know there is only so many wireless channels, how many channels apart should each thing be (routers and devices).
Can you connect to a DD-WRT bridged router by attaching wired and wireless devices to it at the same time? (would that mean you have multiple wireless network names)
can you log into the remote bridged router through the network via its ip address?
last quest i promise: can you have your regular router, then a DD-WRT one as a repeater, then a third as a bridge (kind of like daisy chain them)?

If you flash this with DD-WRT it may work better but what speed do you get out of it?

Wireless G is Wireless G....Is it not?

Why not by a N router and put the Linux stuff on that?

Lets say one of those nice N refurbs on Newegg for example for around the same money and better performance?????

I would stay clear of this router. I am a newbie on this site but I have a lot of experience with Linksys. There older stuff has many problems. Customer service is a joke. Choose a netgear (N) router. (G) and (B) is old news anyways.

Good luck!

Looks like a decent backup to fiddle around with DD-wrt and such.

G is good enough. N has zero advantage for me. No need for the increased range in a 1 bedroom apt. I don't watch TV so no need for wireless streaming capabilities. ANd I have the low speed broadband deal 512K/6M. Hell a B router would handle that.

in for one

Do NOT buy! had this router awhile back. had to return it because there's a specific error, not sure where, that when surfing the web it will mess up and link you to somewhere else. Click Facebook and you get redirected to some random dude in India's Myspace page.
Many have complained about this issue, but the company says there aren't enough to acknowledge that it's an issue.

so yeah, don't buy

Yes, epic Woot writeup. Thats gotta rank up there with the top 10. Course, then again, I love me some TNG. They must have run that episode somewhere on the west coast for someone to put 2 and 2 together! Perfect use for the coupon that looked like it was not going to be used. Just need one to replace an even older, crapper Belkin 802.11b that runs mostly 2 iPhones and the occasional laptop. May even have to try this DD-WRT out. Thanks Woot!

short answer - yes. Bad news answer - this is likely hardware v1.5 and will not be compatible with any 3rd party firmware due to memory restrictions (See comments above). If you get lucky and receive 1.1 or 1.3, you're golden.

sorry if this has already been covered, but i happened to peek in and see this router up for sale and thought i'd let you all know:

If you get this, you MUST run DD-WRT on it... I have the exact same model and used it for about 6 months with the original firmware. The performance was terrible and I was constantly having to do a hard reset. Eventually I got fed up, uploaded the dd-wrt of which I had just recently heard, and since then it's run like a dream. I run it off an SBC DSL modem and couldn't ask for a better router.

I paid about 20 bucks more for mine on ebay, btw.

I bought a couple of items from Woot lately, and ordinarily I am happy with what I bought, but I bought one of those camera key chains it just arrived and is damaged, the lens wont line up with opening. Next I bought 2 of the blankets with arms which are 4 total, all 4 are the same color dark blue.

bassderek

quality posts: 0 Private Messages bassderek

I own this router, and installed DD-wrt on it, and I've run into problems with the small amount of available memory on this unit. Initially the router was having to be reset at least every day. Adjusting the length of remembered connections and max limits has helped, but it still needs the occasional reboot every few days... setting the DNS server to an outside server allows already connected computers to continue basic internet features, but any new ports or connections won't happen once it crashes. As of yet it's not feasible to flash this back to stock, so I would advise against running DD-wrt on here.

I have a large area to cover from my house to my barn. My friend has this router. We tested it today. I have 2 bars inside the first 5 ft of my barn. After which signal drops out. I am going to have to get one at this price. What sort of signal booster will work with this?
