People think our monkeys are harsh and jaded from years of working in advertising. So any chance we have to show off their softer side, we're takin' it. This could be why we were all so pleased when Anthony and Kaela wrote in to let us know about, well, this:

the glare

This little black duckling is brand new to the world, and due to circumstances, he's without any relatives at all. Anthony and Kaela took it upon themselves to give the poor little duckling one of our monkeys so that he'd have something to snuggle. You can see for yourself, the idea worked out just fine. He blends in pretty well so we highlighted him for you below.

clues

If these pictures aren't enough cute for you, Anthony has offered us use of his webstream for some award-winning duckling-on-the-spot coverage. He can't always be sure when it will be up (apparently his cats have final cut) but give it a try anyway. This little duck is pretty darn adorable.

out n about

PS: Anthony's user name is Acipolone, and he's looking for name ideas. Maybe for the monkey, maybe the for duck, it really depends on what you offer. Feel free to make any suggestions in the comments! He'll be checking in, and we assume he'll let you know what he likes best.

ADDENDUM: Anthony sent us a much better, non-webcam photo of the duck. Isn't he cute?

Scott,

Thanks so much for the post! The little guy is doing well these days, and has been spending nearly all of his time snuggled up with the Woot! monkey mama, as you can see in that last photo.

He was the only egg out of 16 to hatch. About half of the eggs came from the "matriarch" of our flock -- she hasn't been feeling well lately, so her eggs weren't really strong enough to pull through. The others were from one of her daughters, Ashton Kutcher (while a duckling, she would constantly peep if she was away from her "entourage" ... and we thought it was a boy), who had only just started laying eggs. We know now not to be so hasty in collecting eggs for hatching -- let the little ones lay for awhile, then use them. The shells were too thick and the membranes inside were too tough to break through. We managed to help this one by breaking bits of the shell and tearing some of the membranes. I'm sure glad we decided to do this and not just "let nature sort it out" as some people told us. (Nature? Really, now. What's natural about an incubator?)

We're going to keep the stream up as long as we can, so feel free to check in occasionally.

And seriously, we need a name for him! (And the monkey!) Any suggestions are otterific.

Hope you enjoy the cuteness. We certainly do. And feel free to check out Kaela's 365 photo blog, as she'll most definitely be posting pictures as the little guy grows up. (This is certainly not the only animal in our house, as you'll see ... but dogs and cats don't mix with ducks, necessarily.)

If he was my duck, I would name him Sir Quacksalot. Or Bill. But I am partial to Sir Quacksalot, and everytime he would waddle in the room I would throw my hands up and yell "hooooooooooo" and make gang signs and stuff. Hilarity would ensue.

I would name the Woot! Monkey "Oprah", just so when someone says "hey, where is Sir Quacksalot?" you could answer, "oh, he is chilling out with Oprah" and you both would just giggle.

You've been here for like two years, that is your ONLY post, and THAT's what you come up with? You need to post more often; that was gold.

I think the monkey should be abominable (a-bomb for short) and the duck should be George.

It's just too cute seeing the duck sitting on the monkey, tucking it's head under one of the arms.

I, too, would vote this comment up if I could.

I know, I suck - I love Woot and love the witty stuff. I must admit, however, that I have a rooting (wooting?) interest in said duck as I know the owner Anthony. Thank you kind sirs!

Quacktastic.
That way, when someone asks you who it is, you can say "That's Quacktastic!" Billy Madison references are always good for a laugh.

How about calling him Dr. Drake Ramoray, after the soap opera character the "Friends" character Joey Tribbiani played.

Haha! Thanks for all the otterific suggestions!

I think we're going to go with Sedrick for the name of the duck, and definitely Oprah for the name of the monkey.

Every time we put him back in the cage he gives a little peep and runs over to the monkey, as if to say, "What up, Oprah?"

We just compared pics from when he was hatched to how is he now, and already he's grown. Jeez.

The cam will be up this week, down next week (we're going to Disney!) and then will be up again on the 18th.

Thanks, Scott, Riley, and the rest of you at Woot! for making what was a sad little moment into something fun and exciting. And, we'd also like to give a shout out to Metzer Farms Hatchery for the video on sexing the day old ducklings.

We really appreciate it!
