Where did you put it - in the oven??? I put two ice cubes in a Kleen Kanteen, and after two hours in a hot car I get...cool water. Just remember to keep it out of direct sun. Under normal conditions the water will stay cold (or at least cool) for several hours with two ice cubes.

Well it's not insulated because it's NOT a Thermos nor container for hot beverages. It's supposed to be an alternative to plastic water bottles.

As to the cap, I have not seen inexpensive metal bottles with metal caps.

The ones I have, that are not as nice as these, have the plastic caps that permit one to drink without having to remove the cap.

The only concern I have with the plastic caps is that the manufacture is so "cheap" that the cap does not seal tightly, thereby causing leaking when the bottle is laying sideways.

The caps in the pics look fine to me. If not, I'll have to tell the recipients of my gift to always keep the bottles upright.

Sigh. We have become a germ-phobic society.

The plastic coating in the SIGG is supposed to allow you to drink wine; I'd still stay away from SIGGs because of the BPA in the plastic. Also, the plastic in the SIGG eventually degrades. When I used to own a SIGG, I eventually discovered that bits of the plastic had worn down--revealing the aluminum underneath. It's possible the weird taste came from bits of revealed aluminum.
After that, I switched to Klean Kanteen. Just like the SIGG, it doesn't act like an insulated bottle. If you place cold water in the Kanteen, your bottle will be cold as well. This is more problematic if you pour in hot water.

richardhod wrote:So, I was at Burning Man, and was using my Sigg aluminium bottle for drinking wine out of. Unfortunately it ended up with a funny flavour in it. Was this because the wine was interacting with the plastic?

Well that's good news.

I just got an eBay package with what look like Styrofoam peanuts. Maybe I could have cooked em up, sprinkled some Tabasco sauce on it and had a tasty snack.

If companies are not using Styrofoam packing peanuts, that would be great news.

IMHO we need to cut way down on product packaging. (In fact, I get lots of Woot items that are the size of a pack of playing cards with shoe box sized plastic surrounding it, for example.)

Here in San Francisco we have a really aggressive recycling program and I am tired of every week tossing two 33 gallon bags of recycling each week. But at least nowadays a lot of it is cardboard packaging.

I was thinking about buying these and keeping one at the gym as an extra to keep my protein powder with. I have a regular shaker, but I have days where I forget to bring it with me, and I live waaay too far to just go home and get my regular shaker. Would my shake react with the steel if I mixed it with this canteen?

Hmm, they don't come with those black insulated covers and nothing to cover the part that goes in your mouth, not very sanitary. I have 3 from another company, 'Smart Source', that I got from Costco. They were in a 3 pack and I think they were like 19.99 so they were a little bit more but came the black case and mouthpiece cover. If you don't have any stainless steel bottles and don't plan on bike riding or hiking with these then they are a great deal though.

I love my kleenkanteen (yes it was $16 for one, but none of what you will read in the link)

All of the problems that people put in the comments were in regards to where they bought it, not problems with the product itself. Since we're buying from Woot that shouldn't be an issue.

26 oz is exactly 0.7689 liters:

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=26+oz+to+liter

I have a one liter SIGG bottle and it does not fit into mesh side of my Wenger 17in laptop back pack. It does fit into the pocket with the zipper however.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997047

But I think this bottle should do just fine for average daily use.

No, I meant caps to *cover* the spouts, to keep them clean when they are bouncing around in your pack, rolling on the ground, etc. Kleen Kanteen has those.

I ordered 3 (total of 6 bottles)! I saw the review. Saw some bad "order" experience as well from http://www.thegreenestdollar.com/2009/02/eco-canteen-product-review/. Same webby... people who actually use the product has nothing much against it (except one who broke the clip).

Anyhue, since woot makes the pricing very transparent, I know I won't have the same bad order experience as buying directly from Eco Canteen website (hopefully). :-)

roxannez wrote:Thanks for the useful link! I put my credit card back in my wallet after checking out those product reviews.

For me that link went to a completely different product- Green Canteen. Not the same product. There are two ways to make the bottle. One way actually welds a flat bottom onto a piece of Stainless steel tubing, creating the sharp edges noted in some reviews about the Green Canteen. The Eco Canteen in today's Woot uses a single piece of Stainless and basically forms it around a mold, there is a welded seam along the side, but the bottom is rounded. Why does this matter? Well, the ones with the flat bottom welded on have a weakness in the edge and will tend to crack when you drop it. The rounded ones will just deform and bend, but won't usually cause a crack. The will still be usable while the flat bottom ones will be junk. Geez that took a long time to explain....
