1h hour but you can buy a beefier one for up to 1:45 per the manual.
Not sure about the life of a re-furbed battery though.

This camera produces great video, but if you are planning on using it for any level of production work, beware. The Everio cameras record video in their own format that is not compatible with any NL editing systems except for their own very limited program. So to use the video in a production, you must download the video to their software, then convert/export into a useable format. It's a very cumbersome and awkward process that takes extra time in your editing. So awkward that I gave my camera away. -CB

If you want time and date to show on the video after you put it on DVD, you can forget it. Very difficult to make that happen and requires other devices.

Thanks for that cbran.
This post helped me make my decision. I don't want my video format be similar to the quickly defunct Sony mini disk.

not very long... about 30 minutes. I have the GZHD10 model which is similar. Good daytime quality. Low light and night time not so good. But, good introductory HD model for most.

Unfortunately, the standard battery does not last too long, according to the product website (scroll down to the bottom): 50 minutes "actual recording time" / 1.5 hours "continuous recording time". Don't know exactly what they mean by those two terms. But add in the fact that this is a refurbished product. Does that mean the battery is not new (shorter life)? I don't know. The cheapest upgrade I can find to the maximum battery is somewhere around $70. ($70 + $225 = slightly less than the price of a new one on Amazon, I think, without the extra battery.)

Not at all. You have to download the video to their proprietary software program then export in to a quicktime file. It shoots great video, but by the time you do all of this it is really a pain. The other downside is it breaks the video into smaller videos, and if you capture just smaller amounts other than the entire video, you loose your timecode references. I saw this as a major time waster and inconvenience and gave mine away. This goes for the whole Everio line I think. Now for vacation and family reunion videos, it is great. :-)

I have the little brother everio to this thing (720p max, but very similar features) ajnd love it. My only complaint (which is a complaint with nearly ALL modern camcorders) is the built in mic sucks unless you're in ideal conditions - no wind, no white noise, and clear sound to begin with - and on mine at least, there's no option for an external microphone.. I'm not sure if this one has the same lack.

With that said - the picture quality and ease of use is perfect... zero complaints! The time lapse feature is great!

Ringo4422 wrote:Doesn't the definition of HD mean it's high definition? Doesn't mp4 look the same as mpeg1? They're HD, right?

Not necessarily - there's a big difference between "resolution" (which is what determines whether something qualifies as "HD"), and "picture quality", which comprises things like motion blur or how soft or sharp the picture is.

To understand the disconnect between resolution and picture quality, take a full-size RAW image from a digital camera, (3000 pixels by 2000 pixels, for example.) Now save that image as a JPG file three times, once with a very low quality factor, once with a middling quality factor, and once with a very high quality factor.

The three resulting files will all be the same resolution (3000 x 2000), but the file sizes and picture quality will vary greatly. Same with video files - it's the resolution that determines whether it's "HD" or not, but depending on the compression algorithm, the file sizes and picture quality can be all over the map.

Very good question. The manual referenced auto settings and mentioned nothing about manual settings for exposure/focus. I can't imagine it not having manual settings but can't find a reference to it yet.

Still a little confused about the editing. I have a Canon Vixia that records to m2ts (or something like that) and is considered AVCHD format. It seems like that is what this camcorder is also recording to.

Having all kinds of fits on how to get to edit that on a Mac. iMovie doesn't seem to like the format at all. Ideas?

If this video camera had a 720p mode I’d be very tempted for the price. Consider:

- 1080p video is 1920x1080, which equals just over 2 megapixels per frame.
- 720p video is 1280x720, which equals just under 1 megapixel per frame.
- The small CMOS sensor in this camera is 1.37 megapixels.
- This video camera only shoots 1080p; there is no 720p mode.

Therefore, this camera is always interpolating. Not a good thing. To claim this is a 1080p video camera is misleading at best.

Honestly, unless you need the BBQZOOM, you're probably better off buying a P&S camera with HD vid. woot selloff was selling a Samsung w/x15 zoom for about $120 a month ago. 14mp photos, 720p, digital and *optical* stabilization.

I'm sure this is a great price for this camcorder, but really, the price to features point is way in favor of point and shoots when looking for an HD movie recorder.

Every product or device in YOUR house that YOU think is great, has someone, somewhere who got one that broke.

And so too are there those people who proclaim on the Net the product is junk.

Fact is, some things break, that's why there are warranties.

I have had JVC products for years (one is a micro camcorder that still works perfect after 12 years) and they have always worked well.

While I don't doubt your experience, it's personal to you and not a reflection of the product. I would not have a single thing in my house if I based shopping on the fact that someone, somewhere has a complaint about it.

Just sayin.

According to the detailed downloadable users guide it has complete manual capable control along with AVCHD HD compressed recording. Now, if it allows any NRL that can import AVCHD into it to do so, then this would be considered a pretty good deal. I've shot many theater performances in manual with AVCHD and the results were outstanding.
Just need to use a separate stereo mic connected to a capable recording device and you're good to go.

I thought people are saying it records in MTS format? Which is easily (quickly) transcodeable to any HD format. (With free programs)

But I'm still leery of buying any JVC device due to a stupendously terrible string of crappy products I had from them in the mid-to-late 90s.

They may be a great brand now, but I'll never know.

Camcorders are specifically designed for video, and hence offer better quality. This also has a larger lens than a P&S, and the imager is farther away from the lens, which means it can be bigger - less image noise.

Nevertheless, video quality on P&S cameras has really improved from where it was a couple of years ago.

This is the mid-range of the JVC HD camcorders.

I want this to put professional grade videos on various sites, but I don't need the most advanced model (that prosumers use, even some news broadcasters as a backup camcorder).

But Wooters should remember that while this has a lot more features than "mini camcorders" it is not JVC's best models. (In fact it retails on JVC's site for under $500).

I also remember, however, paying $1500 for a JVC or Sony camcorder just 10 years ago.

I've had JVC video cameras for years; my current one for 3 years with hundred of hours of shooting (many soccer games!). NOT ONE PROBLEM I'D CERTAINLY BUY JVC AGAIN!

Now, as to this camera....

1) Is this what is known as a Hi-Def camera, in that when I do my "slow motion" shots of goals, the picture quality appears much better on the screen, i.e. not "choppy?"

2) I use Roxio 2010 editing software which works great and is easy to learn. Any thoughts on this? Will Roxio "edit" HD clips?

3) My current JVC holds 7 hours of video at "high-quality" on some internal hard drive, which is what I run. (as opposed to lesser quality which can hold up to 30 hours on the camera) With this woot camera, do I have to buy additional "cards" to hold more video? I'd like to be able to put about 2 hours on the camera before I have to download the clips to an external hard drive.

THANKS AND I HOPE THIS CAMERA IS AVAILABLE IN 3 HOURS, IT SEEMS LIKE A DEAL.
