The word ice is derived from Old English īs, which in turn stems from Proto-Germanic isaz. So, technically you can call this an īs maker or an isaz maker...but if you do then nobody will know what you're talking about.

Yeah, I'm shooting for the quality post here people, lol. Thank you wikipedia.

I am in for one of these. The only problem is the size. It is almost as big as my refrigerator. I only spent $70 for the refrigerator, and this is $104. Anywaze, it's way better than another vacuum cleaner! Ice tea and/or coffee anyone?

I recently purchased the Koldfront model from CompactAppliance for ~$120 and it does look identical in every visible place to the Igloo. Several others at CA look the same other than the name on them, so it seems this is a popular one to rebrand.

I had a couple issues with the Koldfront. First, it leaked when pumping water up to the ice making area. That turned out to be one end of the hose not having a zip tie on to secure it snugly. Then I let it run for a couple days and never once was able to get more than 2 cubes of ice per cycle. Only the edge of the ice making "nozzles" would get cold, so it seems like it didn't get enough of a refrigerant charge.

Not sure what the buttafuocoure rate is, but just based on the reviews I've seen so far of the various look-a-like models, I'd estimate 70% good and 30% buttafuocoures. Worth a shot at this price.

Not an crazy deal here. They show up at Kohls and Overstock from time to time at this price. Like said before, other online retailers generally have better return and shipping policies. Woot used to be the place foro good deals almost everytime. Now it just once in a blue moon is there something that is worth buying here.

Thinking about buying one of these for my husband to take camping. Have a fridge in our camper but use coolers too. Anyone use one of these for that purpose? Can't ask husband what he thinks about it because he is out hunting/camping. In the summer we sometimes have to run back to town just to get more ice.

We have the same one in our office at work and the thing works great. Dump in a couple of big tumblers of water and you have fresh ice in about 10 minutes.

Knowing the amount of ice in one load is a good thing but how long does it take to make one basket? It says 26 pounds in under 24 hours so that is a little over one pound per hour.

It seems to hold enough water to make three batches of ice. One basket is 2.2 pounds.

So 26/2.2 = means 11 total batches in a day. 11/3 = Almost 4 Do you really want the decimals?

For those who do 26/24 is 1.083 pounds per hour (pph looked dumb).

11/3 = 3 and 2/3

Meaning to work at maximum efficiency you'll have to be filling the reservoir about 4 times.

24/3.66 = 6.54

So every 6.54 hours (let's say seven), you'll need to refill it.

Of course, I was just bored and wanted to see the numbers. You'll probably make all the ice you need if you fill it once a day.

I really should be in bed, so forgive me if my calculations are wrong....

So, if I wanted 10lbs of ice to take on the boat for a fishing trip, at 1.083pph, it should take almost 6 hours to make 10lbs.

As far as how much is 3.1 liter = 0.81893336231 gallon [US, liquid]

Weight of 1 US Gallon of water = approx. 8.35 lb

3.1 liter is about 7.5lbs of water. 2 refills would give me approx 14-15lbs of ice.

Wait....that doesn't work out....in 24 hours I'd have 28-30lbs of ice with only 4 refills. But it only makes 26lbs.

Somebody fix my math for me....

You would think though, Or at Least I would and Did... That If It were made and described to be PORTABLE

That they would have thought of something to do with that cord. I mean If It's too expensive for them to put a retractable cord on it - How Bought a little door with a small compartment to put the cord in?

Found my answer....

How much does 3 liters of water weigh?
In: Volume, Weight and Mass [Edit categories]
[Improve]
3L of water = 3kg

1L = 1kg = 2.2 lb. (us)

2.2lb x 3.1 liter = 6.82lbs.

So each batch is about 6.82lbs, with 2 refills, I'd have about 13lbs of ice.

A portable ice maker is the best accessory for camping. Just set it up outside and you have ice when you need it -- no more trips to the camp store that always seems to be out of ice. Beside drinke, we used the ice to keep out coolers cool. We actually fill zip lock bags with ice for this purpose. Keeps the food cool and dry.

I bought one of these six years ago. I paid almost $300.00. After a short while, I was not satisfied with making only a small amount of ice unless it was constantly tended to. So I took my trusty Sawzall, and cut the front out about halfway down. I then crafted a chute from where the ice slides across and out the front. The front of the ice maker needs to be cut just enough so that there is enough slope for the ice to slide. Then I put a ice chest with a hole in the top in front of the ice maker, so the ice fills the cooler instead of going into the small original container. I then increased the water capacity by installing a large container beside the ice maker with a hose to allow level water.

Of course, I needed to change the wiring a little bit, because the control panel is on the front where I did my cutting.

Now, we have more ice than we can possibly use for any occasion. It will run all night without being tended to. Believe me, you will not believe how much ice this thing can make by applying this modification.

Don't tell me that I voided the warranty by taking the Sawzall to it. I know that. The warranty is only good for a year anyway. This thing has run for years flawlessly.

Some of my friends think I am crazy. But I have a lot more ice than they do, and I don't need to run to the grocery store to buy it.

The clinic where I work has one of these - yet another twin whose brand I don't recall - and it works great! It's faster than I expected it to be, it's pretty quiet, and we haven't had any problems with it so far.

I don't know about portable. It's portable the same way a microwave oven is portable, I suppose. The only thing I'd like to see would be an option to feed it with a water line so we don't have to manually fill the resevoir.

Jim, if you could post a few pictures of that mod, I'd be eternally grateful!

I own this ice maker - in short, without the mod mentioned above, it's relatively useless. A few notes:

- The ice rate/hr is a little misleading.

First, there's an 'operating conditions' issue, where if it's even a hint above 70F the rate slows down considerably.

Then, there's the fact that the first cube generation doesn't start for some time, while all of the water in the reservoir is cooled. So that '26 pounds in 24 hours' sounds impressive, but that first hour you don't come close to getting a pound of ice.

- Ice is heavy - a pound an hour sounds like a lot. It's really not. If you consider what you're paying for electricity, if you only need this for a few hours, it's cheaper to just buy a bag of ice from the store at $1/lb (when you factor in the cost of the device).

- To Jim's point - unsupervised, you really don't get much ice at all. If this could crank ice into a separate cooler, and it had a deeper reservoir, you would get a ton of ice after you initially cooled the water. But, it's got a small basket that needs to be emptied manually. If you're not there ,it's filled with less than a pound of ice and new ice creation stops (until that ice melts).

In short - unless you're ready to take the hacksaw to this baby, or are in a situation where you have no other means of getting ice, it's really not worth it.

You realize, of course, that a well is just a spring that hasn't "sprung". Or better stated, a spring is a well that is above ground level.

When it comes to water quality, there is no difference between the two.

The difference in terms has to do with where the water table is located with relation to the ground. In a spring, the water table is above ground level. With a well, the water level is below the ground level, so they dig a hole to get to it.

Hope this makes you more willing to trust your own water and hope it helps to save you some $$ and stress.
