mconrad wrote:The Kingston has a lifetime warranty, but the Transcend is only 2 years. I think Kingston is generally more favorably thought of, but thats just a matter of opinion.

In our family, we have probably about a dozen SDHC cards that we use in one of our three (oops, 4 now) cameras, two MP3 players, electronic picture frame, video camera, and I even have a microSDHC in my cell phone to hold music and ring tones. The smallest are 4G, the largest one is a 16G.

I've used several brands. So far I've never had a problem with the Kingston, Transcend, or Toshiba branded cards. I HAVE returned an A-Data brand 8G that stopped working after a couple of years in my Canon camera. (Couldn't even format.) Got a free replacement, but it too buttafuocoed after a few months. (I won't bother to return again - just won't use that brand). So my two cents, Kingston and Transcend make great cards, A-Data is iffy.

If I didn't already have plenty of spare cards, I'd be in for 3 at this price.

Do we have verification these are legit? I've read reports of these factories in Asia where rogue employees set up shop in the middle of the night with skeleton crews to run off cheap versions of the same thing made at the factory, using scrap materials. This is especially a problem with SD cards, due to their size and relative undistinguishability (I doubt that's a word) from the real thing.

See the below link for a little detail (note: this isn't the original article I read a year or so ago, but it has some of the same information, just less detail):

moondrake wrote:Fot me it is a tough choice. My new Canon G11 will take approxiamtely 10,000 photos on my 16g card and my two batteries. I took 6,000 shots in 3 weeks on my recent trip to Australia, so it certainly seems like one 16g card is more convenient. But about halfway through the trip I started to get worried about losing all my photos if something happened to the camera (stolen, dropped into the ocean or down a chasm) and I wondered if maybe using smaller cards and putting them away some place safe every couple of days wouldn't be a better plan.

Actually, Im now in the habit of either changing or backing up cards every day when Im out travelling. Some hotels or nearby shops offer memory card backups for a reasonable fee, but I cant always count on being near convenience like that.
My paranoid habit is due to a mishap on my first underwater camera. Because it was new and in an unfamiliar environment, I did something supremely SPOOKTACULAR! and flooded the camera, mem card with it. (the o-ring somehow got closed across the lanyard)
Fortunately no images were lost on that incident, but I now make sure that images I do take are safely stored at the end of a day.

Reading the chatter about using these with a Wii...what would you use them for? Toting photos for shared viewing?

(Wii was so user-friendly, haven't yet read the manual...)

This specific one did not work for me in my Wii.

As for things to try

I would like to try see if I can boot another OS from this card (VMware ESXi), but I am not sure if these things have a 512 or 2048 byte sector size.

I have an DSi XL, I hope this works in it.

Readyboost should work with this.

I do not have the card at the moment to test.

I love Kingston cards. A few years ago, my family and I took a zombtastic trip to Australia. At the end of a three week trip, I had over 1200 never-to-be-repeated photos on a Kingston 16GB card (I have since learned to spread shots over several smaller cards). We were on a sailboat in Sydney Harbor when a friend accidentally knocked my camera overboard. It was underwater for an hour before he fished it out by diving to the bottom. The camera was a total wreck and never worked again. I was so upset that I had lost all my vacation photos that I was sick. When we got back to land, I ran to a photo kiosk at Woolworth's (they still have them down there) and put the card in with trepidation. I was certain all of the pictures were gone. Lo and behold, they were all there and the card worked great. I am still using the same card today!

Ever since then I have been grateful to Kingston and mostly use their cards in all of my equipment (sometimes Woot deals on other cards are just too good to resist!). Buy these Kingston cards. It's a good price and you will always be glad you chose Kingston quality.

Exactly. I strongly disagree about using multiple cards -- I always carry a spare or two when I'm traveling, but that's for outright failure. When I get back to my hotel room, I transfer the contents of the card to my hackintosh and put it right back into the camera. And since both my point-and-shoot and my DSLR shoot in RAW+JPG, I've switched to 16GB cards anyway. I don't want to miss a shot because I get a little flashing warning that the card has been filled.

htmiller2000

quality posts: 0 Private Messages htmiller2000

I'm in for 3 of these at that price and only $5 shipping for less than $20, is a great deal. My new camera is 14.2 MP and has 720 HD video, so the SDHC Class 6 is definitely needed. With the 4GB size, I hope the 4GB size is large enough. I don't want to have tons of pics on one card, but I also don't want to have to use too many on say a trip or at an event.

No, shipping is $5 whether you buy 1, 2, or 3. Hence, the suggestions that buying more than 1 (especially with these cards) would be a good idea.

If anyone knows of a good source of *non*-SD 4gb cards, ie suitable for non-SD compatible devices such as the Kindle, some older GPSes, and some of the early MP4/games machines like the JXD301, please post. I've ordered too many of these online that turned up containing SDHC chips :-/ I'm not sure they're even made any more, and the last one I found cost $24 from old stock at a Borders bookshop just before it closed down.

It's generally state of the art at any time that are faked. A few years ago it was 16's, now it's 32's (or are we up to 64Gb yet?). More profit. Unless it's both faked *and* very old stock, I'd be fairly confident in these. And I'm sure woot guys have already run a memory tester on a random sample, right guys?

But "rogue employees"??? More like rogue subcontractors. Faking at the corporate level is endemic in China, they don't even consider it bad practise over there. Anything that helps transfer dollars from the USA to the mainland is fair game.
