Why would anyone who wanted/needed a seriously high-powered computer for games or whatever even consider buying an off-the-shelf desktop computer? (Unless maybe an Alien?) If you think you are a big enough nerd to play computer games, why aren't you building your own computer? Posers!

I did too, as my old Slim-Line was only 1GB and was starting to run real slow.

Buying an Alienware is like buying a mac. You pay extra for the name on the side and so you can act elitist. Building your own is the only way to go for gaming.

Absolutely think the colon-esque copy is priceless. Less so the product offering.

And thus my caveat: "maybe" - they are definitely overpriced for what you get.

I think my problem is I don't know any good words.

the really crappy thing is- They KNOW this things runs like dookie with the memory they provide with the system.

You have to ditch the memory installed to upgrade. the thing takes 4 2 gig sticks.

ok so you think - Hmm well i will just get a vid card and free up a load of memory...

NOPE!!! The Bios is so rediculously simple that you cannot turn the Onboard OFF.
can you believe that? what a load of crud.
yeah you can put a pci express card in, but there is only a few that will work with this set up with 64bit and windows 7.
but since you cant shut the onboard off - the resources are still being used.

funny hu? also teh mother board is Tiny - featurless and all that.

I figured that's what you meant, but I don't often get a chance to take a shot at Alienware and macs. I just couldn't pass it up!

I'm currently using an Alienware m15x (I built once and got screwed when stuff started going wrong - the tech support is nice. Plus I can't really build a laptop, which I needed for college) but actually have a macbook pro coming in the mail today! How funny you should say that! Although, I bought the mac because I'm so sick of Microsoft; I'm willing to make the switch. Kind of terrified, to be honest, but think it'll be worth it in the end.

thomasj42 wrote:As a non computer guy, the question I have is: Will it run Starcraft 2?

Kind of. Google the graphics card, you'll see that in most builds it's considered the limiting component. The nice thing about starcraft is that it will automatically adjust to your system. You may lose graphics detail with this system, but the action should be fine. And you will save a bundle...

Where can I get some advices on how to " build a decent low-end gaming computer for $700 or so"?

WhirlwindMonk wrote:Hm, good call. I would think that as long as you go low-mid end of the current or past gen, you'd be alright, but there could also be an issue with a lack of connectors.

But hey, this is woot. The risk of ending up with worthless junk is part of the fun!

Edit: The post above me points out you can't turn off the onboard video card, so the rest of this doesn't really matter. Do not pick up this system for gaming. Put the extra time and money in and build a decent low-end gaming computer for $700 or so.

Bought this as a replacement for an old media center pc that is over the hill. I'll primarily be using this in my bedroom in lieu of my laptop to watch movies, download and surf (no gaming). Is it neccesary to upgrade the RAM, and if so, by how much?

As someone with a modicum of computer knowledge (software more than hardware), would I be looking at a DIY project here? Thanks in advance for any tips guys.
