"Built-in light to capture photos in video in dark areas"

I was curious if the light would function as a sustained light for video or if it just does flash for photos. I suspect only flash.

The bad thing about product launches is that there are no reviews, so I have no way of doing my homework. I looked up the Sylvania Pro HD sold by QVC and it has some really mixed reviews. See: http://reviews.qvc.com/1689/E165911/sylvania-e165911-sylvania-pro-hd-720p-pocket-camcorder-with-4gb-sd-card-reviews/reviews.htm. I suspect that this product will produce similar comments, since it is made by the same manufacturer.

Just remember that Sylvania also makes light bulbs, so it's quite possible that they provide continuous light.

No need to buy this just to get the Memory on TV CD. Thingfling.com has a 2pk of Verbatim Photo Album CDs for $5.99 in the closeout section. They appear to be similar products.
(You weren't really going to buy today's Woot just for the CD, though. Were you?)

I am sure Sylvania said "Well, we make light bulbs, what is something we could attach a bulb to? How about a camera"

Of course, it also does 30 fps and VGA, and even has a decent still photo Mode. The Zi6 is available for less then $60, and is one of the few cameras that have as incredible macro mode.

Where can you get a Zi6 for less than $60? I see one refurb version for $69 but it's backordered and I have never heard of the seller.

The craze with these cameras, at least for me, is that they are great for elementary kids. In general, not this one especially. Anyway, I don't spend a lot so when they break, and elementary kids find creative ways to break them, I am not breaking the bank!

cheap, reliable, rugged, picket-sized. I picked up the Kodak one a while but (for much more money) and we are really enjoying it. It has some features this one doesn't... mic input, 60fps, etc. But it was over $100.

Think this would be good for a two year old who is pretty good about not dropping stuff? I just couldn't bite on one of those "kid-friendly" cameras with worse resolution than my phone. He's pretty electronics savvy. What's the worst that could be - he likes it as much as one of those reviewers that gives bad reviews because they can't take a second to try to figure it out? Hopefully, I'd be able to figure out and teach him if it's really that bad, right?

I know 720 vs 1080 wont make a difference unless you have a really large tv, BUT I am looking for a camera to record on my dash, and I sometimes have the need to zoom into the video after the fact to get certain datails, such as a license plate, etc. Will i get more detail zooming into a 1080i video vs zooming into a 720p video?

So many complaints about needing an SD card! First off, doesn't pretty much every camera on the market have tiny amounts of internal memory? Secondly, who doesn't have a ton of SD cards sitting around the office/home these days? I'm in for one.

The AVI format will play on it's on in Windows Media Player. It is also the format I prefer to pull in when creating Wedding DVD's and such. Looks like a good deal but I would add a memory card for more storage space.

So new it's not even on the Sylvania site to see more specs like file format. Either that or Sylvania is dumping a piece of crap before it launches. Looks like it's not compatible with Macs. So, forget it. Must be junk.

I had a Flip and although I loved it and the quality was amazing, I returned to because units this small need stabilization. You just can't hold them still! Now the new Flip has stabilization.

alanwaite wrote:Looks like it records in AVI format. Does anyone know if that works in iMovie?

The AVI "format" is merely a container for a video stream. How the video stream is encoded, is another matter. iMovie can handle some of the encoding methods found in AVI files, but not all.

There are ways to help yourself with this, which essentially open up more possible encoding methods your Mac can handle. The first one is to install Perian, which is a free collection of stream-encoding methods that allow QuickTime to read the stream inside the AVI file. All Mac users should really have Perian installed, so it's best to get it, even if it doesn't work with Flip's AVI files. (http://www.perian.org/)

Second, QuickTime Pro -- if you have it -- may read the file and convert it to something that iMovie will handle. I own QTPro and that's how I do it, but you might not want to spend the money on it. Third, there are third-party utilities out there -- most which cost money (as QTPro does) and one or two might even be free -- which will do the trick.

If you plan to do a lot of movie-generating, paying a small amount of money for QTPro or some other conversion utility would be adviseable. Free kludges are nice, but if you want to do this often, it might be worth a few dollars to save yourself the headaches. This is one of those rare instances in computing where I encourage people not to try to get away cheap.

There's no way you're getting something that big in an Estes type rocket. Not to mention with the weight, I doubt if it would even get off the ground.

Of course, if you are launching something much much bigger, it could work.
