It works but few use it because they need to know an email (on iPhones, the phone calls between two can switch to facetime, but you need wifi).

The latest Skype works for video calls, so everyone with a 4G touch I know uses that far more since it is cross platform.

I'm sure it's a lot of fun to play with and look at for sure, but when it comes down to it, it's a music player and 8gb just doesn't cut it any more. My 30 gig player is full and I had to pare back what I put on there (no video, slimmed down on my podcasts). I bought a Sansa (I have an addiction) and upgraded the memory with a microSD card that I also got from woot... so the total bill of my now-8bg sansa is just around 30 bucks. At some point, if I were so inclined, I could expand it to 36 gig with a bigger SD card (someone said a 32 will work, but I don't envision buying one any time soon)... but the point is, that this is a pretty meager player wrapped in a very nice case. Heck, my 30 gig player was 100 less than this! I don't blame woot, but I question why a player like this exists or why anyone would pay so much for it.

I posted this in July for a 3rd gen Touch. Of course, this Woot has even more features:

NightGhost wrote:My personal review, updated:

We are a family of 4, and we own 4 iPod touches. When I first got mine, I was thinking that it was nice to have an mp3 player that could also surf the web. Then my wife and I went to the movies, and she dropped the cover to my ebook reader, and couldn't find it in the dark. A nice guy behind us said "don't you have the free flashlight function on your iTouch?" and helped us find the cover.

Of course, you can read ebooks on the iPod touch too.

Later that day we had to drive to an office, and my wife panicked because she didn't know how to get to the address, and had left her GPS at work. iPod touch to the rescue again. Note that the Touch has a GPS-like feature that uses WiFi.

It even has an app ($10) that lets me watch TV broadcasts from my Hava Titanium HD (got it on Woot!).

I was never an Apple fan, but...

that only begins to explain why the iPod touch is my favorite gadget.

This also has voice control of your music (unlike the 8GB model), and you can buy earbuds with a microphone that work with it.

And many of the best apps and games are free, or very inexpensive. I've been playing the Texas Hold-em game lately.

I also like 5-0 Radio, which lets you listen to local police and emergency broadcasts. I get the game scores with the CBS Sports app, and of course, it has the great Woot app!

I've also been using mine to listen to audiobooks. And today I used it to settle an argument about local street names.

You can see movie ratings with the imdb app, and then see where they're playing with Flixster. And sometimes you just want to set an alarm...

It's much, much more than an mp3 player.

People still buy these things? I thought this was the 21st century. My phone does everything this thing does and more. I have not needed an mp3 player for 5 years because of my phone and I thought that was behind the curve. Retina display, give me a brake its a gimmick. look at a non retina display at two feet and tell me if you can see individual pixels during normal operation. and while my phone can play a full length movie without stuttering. My screen is bigger and I really still don't see a point. browsing internet or games I can deal but video? save your money and buy a better phone. Does woot sell phones yet?

To let everyone know, this does not have gps like features. It uses your wifi connection to pin point a round about area, not your exact location, i correct nightghost every time they put an ipod touch up, but woot seems to allow him to keep lying. He says he can use his ipod touch to get around, how? No where in this country is there free wifi available everywhere. Basically on an ipod touch its like going to mapquest, typing in an address, getting directions and than instead of having a print out, you have it on your touch. So for the ten millionth time, stop it nightghost, this has no gps like features, it resembles nothing of what a gps really is. Thank you.

Seriously? Skype is really easy for video calling. You install it and go. There's nothing to it.

Will this work with my Mac?

(kidding, I'm sure someone said that already)

This deal isn't *great* ... but the new iTouch is really awesome. Unfortunately, I bought the last generation RIGHT before this model came out. I was sort of tempted to get the newer one as I really want the camera and upgraded screen, but the 8GB in this deal really aren't enough for me.

I have a 32GB iTouch and I'd say that's about as small as I'm comfortable with. Yes, you can fit a LOT of music in 8GB, but nowhere near the quantity I like to keep on me.

First of all, rarely does any post really get my Irish up, but your use of the word "lying" shows a lack of class on your part.

From Skyhook's site:

"To pinpoint location, Skyhook's Core Engine uses a massive reference network comprised of the known locations of over 250 million Wi-Fi access points and cellular towers."

I live on Long Island. The most widespread wifi service here is Optimum Wifi (there are others as well). No, it doesn't cover the whole Island - not even close. But it does a good job covering the commercial districts in Western and Central L.I., which are generally where I need to get around. And it does a good enough job that I mistook it for a genuine GPS until folks on Woot informed me otherwise.

When I needed it, it did not just give me Mapquest-like directions. Rather it continuously showed the location of my wife's car as we progressed to our destination - i.e. just what a GPS does.

I'm sure that there are areas of the country that aren't as well-covered as L.I. But here's what Optimum Wifi alone looks like - zoom in to see what's covered.

Finally, the accuracy is really impressive. Sitting here, I just turned on my Touch and selected the Maps app. Right now it's set to hybrid mode - it shows streets superimposed on aerial photo view. There's a blue dot that shows my location, and if I zoom in, it shows my yard. Not my neighbor's yard, mind you.

Well, I am getting a little tired of sitting here, so maybe I'll go do some "lying."

p.s. You do not need to be able to connect to those access points for WPS to use them. Again from Skyhook's site:

"Are you "stealing" a Wi-Fi access point signal to use it to determine location?

No. Every access point generates a publicly available signal that can be "heard" by any Wi-Fi-enabled device within range. Skyhook has only aggregated this signal data and paired it with other information so that it can use it as reference point infrastructure to determine the location of mobile devices."

I don't own one but based on the things I've read, the Touch can simulate GPS by triangulating known WiFi access points. This is similar to the way rescuers find people by listening for the pings of their cellphone. It's not as accurate as GPS (which triangulates satellites using precise timing) and you probably can't get altitude information, but if there are enough WiFi points in your area, it can probably do a decent job.

Although I can see 20+ WiFi routers in my Manhattan/NYC apartment, being out on the street is another matter. Unlike the suburbs, few routers are at street level and the signal has problems traveling through the steel and cement that makes up NYC buildings. I have 2 apartments on consecutive floors in the same building and the WiFi signal has problems traveling from one apartment to the other. Traveling down to the street reliably would be even harder.

ps - I doubt if Nightghost is lying since he has nothing to gain. Heck, I think he's a Windows user. At worst, he's mistaken.

That is just plain crud. I have an ipod touch and when I use my google maps it says im in the middle of the road in front of my house. Not very accurate and even less accurate when your constantly on the move. I'm sick and tired of you constantly saying how this helped you. And maybe it is just long island, but guess what, not everyone lives on L.I http://askville.amazon.com/ipod-touch-work-GPS/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=7458825 Read the first answer on that site, it basically said what i just said. Your telling people, dont buy a gps, this has gps like features. go to a website, read up on the features that come with the cheapest gps money can buy, and i guarantee you the ipod touch has none of these. So how about i change the word lying to misinforming future buyers of the ipod touch? Does that sound better? Stick to copying and pasting links, thats what you do best as proof above, not personal reviews. Thank you!

As far as using Ipod touch with real GPS, it can be done real cheaply.
