Ok, so I've been checking Apple's site daily for a while now, waiting for these current gen touches to become available refurb. All I keep seeing is the prev gen. Anyway, tempted here although the price doesn't seem that hot as others have mentioned. Still, in my experience Apple refurb stuff is like new. So, my question to those who know iPod Touches: how much memory do I really need with one of these? Is 8gb livable? Is 64gb overkill? What is the sweet spot of price versus capacity? Thank you to anyone who can give me some good advice. I'm going to buy one...somewhere...and would appreciate some informed opinion as to memory. Thanks!

I have a 3rd Gen iPod Touch and an iPhone 4 - trust me - the Retina display is FANTASTIC.
The 3rd gen is positively fuzzy next to the Retina display.

I want to sell my Touch to get a 4th gen, but too ostentatious with the iPhone 4. Why both?

Because I leave my iPhone 4 alone as a PHONE. It has standby power for nearly 4 days as a PHONE. If I WiFi surf on the iPhone, I have to charge every day (potentially missing a call too). Sure, I'll use the iPhone to surf when necessary. But if my 3rd Gen Touch can pull duty as WiFi surf tool FIRST, I'll use it.

All that said, this deal is $40 less than new - not bad, but unless you really need that $40, I'd buy new with the 1 year warranty (not the 90 days here).

I wouldn't mind a newish iPod touch. But considering I have over 6 GB of apps and games on my iPhone, an 8 GB device really isn't an option. Many of the newer, more detailed games are pushing 400-500 MB file sizes.

Is amazon still selling these *new* for $214.99 bundled with a $25 gift certificate? Shipping was free, and they delivered it before xmas! (I ordered it the week before)

Price seems a little higher than I expected to see (esp. for a refurb) here on woot!

I bought the 32g and love it! These things are awesome. I can't put the dang thing down.
Came in real handy on vacation with the Maps App, as long as there's free WiFi.

You gotta have one of these.

It depends on many things. How much music do you want to keep on it at any given time? Are you using it primarily for apps and games? Well, mostly those two things, I suppose. I have this model and have 50 or 60 apps, a couple hundred songs that I just swap out of my iTunes library when I get tired of them and a handful of podcasts on it and still have a couple gigs left over. So for me, personally, and what I use it for, 8gb has been fine so far.

I have a 8G 3rd Gen Touch.

8G is plenty for me, but I'm pretty, uh, weird. For the first 10 months, I had ZERO music on my Touch (I am into pictures - 750, and movies - 4 or 5 feature-length movies).

8G was plenty; I changed the movies out frequently or have my own short compositions (avg 5-20 mins each). And I still have about 1 GB free.

My wife has a 32G Touch - she is a big music fan and has probably 16G of music.

8G Touch has about 6.5 GB free for music/videos - average MP3 is 4 MB, so we're talking 6000-7000 songs easy. You can take it from there.

Did you comparison shop? If you had, you'd find this same thing for $5 LESS at the Amazon Marketplace...
Or for $15 MORE you could get a brand-new one with 1yr warranty

Amazon consist of a variety of resellers, and then there is also the true amazon storefront. As far as I have ever seen Amazon the actual Amazon, LLC. is a certified reseller, and as such the warranty would begin with your purchase from Amazon. However, this may be different from other resellers, and some many not even have a warranty, depending on the terms of the item.

It would be a good deal if it was a 16gb...

The retina display is "like" the iphone 4 display but lower quality: when you look at it sideways the color will shift while in the iphone 4 screen you will see the same colors.

This is a horrible deal. I've been monitoring iPod prices for some time and both Amazon and Wal-Mart have had the new iPods for cheaper and often with a gift card. This deal is not Woot-worthy, in my opinion. If it were a 16GB model, then we'd be talking.

Thanks for the replies to my inquiry. Looks to me like the 32 gig model is the best compromise between price and capacity. If this was a steal of a price for the 8 gig, I would live with it, but compared to new it really isn't. I'll bet Apple will have them on their own site soon enough for at least this price and more warranty.

Well, Woot, you had me excited there for a while, as I'm just itching to get one of these, but the deal isn't compelling enough. Maybe next time.

I have 3 of this generation. 1 for my dad, 1 for me, 1 for my gf. I also have an iPhone 4 with the same screen. Both my iPod and my iPhone have been through absolute hell. The retina display is awesome, however, you can fetch older models with higher capacity (much higher capacity) on eBay for $30-40 more.

Also, it is worth noting that these should be jailbreakable upon arrival.

Being an owner since the 1st gen and having recently upgraded from 32 to the 64 gb 4th gen, I've had a lot of experience with these things. That being said, here are my observations:

Much of it simply depends on what you're going to use it for and what you want to put on it. I have about 20 gigs of music and video at this size took up the rest of the 32 with about 6 films at less than 2 gigs each. There was always even space left over for aps which took up the least space of all most of the time.

So, it depends largely on what you want to use it for. 8 gigs will hold a few hundred songs and a video or two, 16 will hold about double that, 32 will hold over 3000 songs and multiple movies, and 64 gigs... well... a whole lot of stuff.

It all depends on how big the stuff is you want to put on it. If you don't mind only having a few hundred songs and 1-2 movies max at a time on it, the 8 gig should probably suffice.

This is a very good buy. But I think saving up and getting the 32gb is the practical choice since HD videos can tend to take up space and of course apps. Great games like Infinity Blade is around 320MB and Rage is 760MB.

I've used about half of my 32gb up, but I have 833 songs, 16 videos (that's 3 movies and 13 top gear episodes), and a bunch of games. 8gb could hold something like 2000 songs if that's all you did. Videos are fairly large (nearly a GB for higher quality). So if you don't feel compelled to watch movies on the little screen, and you don't have a massive song collection, 8gb might be plenty for you.

Into astronomy?

With all the focus on the retina display, an overlooked feature new to the 4th gen Touch is the 3-axis gyroscope, which has led to the development of several neat apps.

There are now several astronomy apps that run on the 4th gen touch (and not just the iPhone). You just point the Touch at the sky, and it locates constellations for you. For anyone who has a telescope without a constellation finder (or with a lousy one - there are plenty of those), this can make the whole astronomy experience much easier (and more fun).

Of course, you don't need a telescope for these apps.

There is a choice of such apps, and since I (sniff) am still using a 3d gen Touch, I won't review them. But here's a comparison.

your math makes my head hurt...
you said:
"8G Touch has about 6.5 GB free for music/videos - average MP3 is 4 MB, so we're talking 6000-7000 songs easy"
average mp3 is 4mb, so 250 mp3s = 1gb.
6.5 gb then holds 1,625 of these average mp3s.
