To be completely honest it really depends on what you are going to use your Ipod for. If you don't plan to really put any music on it then yes 8gb is plenty of memory to hold all of the applications. I have a lot of music and I like to have all of it in one place which is why I myself have a 64gb Ipod which is already 40 something gigs full already. After you do some calculating as to how much music you have or if your going to put movies or whatever else on it, and you're still not sure between one size and the other, than go for the bigger one. Because remember whatever you get you are stuck with as their memory is not upgradeable.

2500!?? If your listening to fuzzy clips of songs maybe. A typical 3 minute song at decent quality is about 5 mb, meaning you're really only looking at about 1600 songs.

Not necessarily true. We're a family with a Touch and two iPhones. All have seen accidents and we've never broken one. If my 6 yr old can manage to not destroy one, most adults should be able to as well.

I understand that accidents do happen but breakage is very rare.
I'm typing this in an iPhone that's been dropped several times onto a concrete floor while getting out if my car at work.

I have the previous version, and 8gb is fine for me. Then again, I don't have gigabytes upon gigabytes of songs. The more music you have that you'll actually listen to on a daily basis, the more space you'll need. If you're like me, there will be more memory devoted to apps than to music

I have previous generation 32gb. I bought it 2 weeks too early for this generation, back in August. It is more than 1/2 full. I primarily use it for audio books and apps. If you are looking primarily for a music player DON'T bother with this that is overkill. It is a computer. It is an invaluable work tool, communication device for disabled kids, and good time killer with games.
I pair it with a mifi device (Virgin Mobile $40/mo unlimited (I will rant about their customer service another time), or Verizon more /month limited but actual customer service, so I get wifi almost anyplace.
I my 9 year old wants one too (he is saving his money diligently, using an app on my itouch to track it), but this price is a rip-off I can get one with a $50 gift card at Toys R Us or Walmart.
The only place I have ever seen 16gb itouches is at BJ's

I have the 64GB (functionally, 59.84 GB, apparently), and it's actually not big enough. I have 20 or so GB of music, but I also have video heavy podcasts (Ted talks), as well as WAY too many GB of iTunes U stuff (like, 40 GB of audio/video). I've always known I would need a big iPod (I've always been GB heavy), whereas I know people who think nanos are fine. I can't handle the concept of having to choose which songs/genres/etc I would want to take with me, I want to take it all and then have the chance to decide on the fly.

Last year, when Woot! had 2nd and 3rd gen iPod Touches, I picked up a 16GB (it matched the capacity of my iPad) and found it to be too little to store everything I wanted on it. So I picked up the 32GB when it rolled around and passed the 16GB down to my kids. The choice has been a good one.

The big difference is that I don't keep podcasts or music on the iPad, nor the unit for the kids, so 16GB is fine (although I do have to manage the videos a bit); the 32GB means I don't constantly "fiddle" with the content on the touch, which has a larger cross-section of my digital media because it is so portable.

As a close point of reference, my 2500-2600 songs are like 12gigs. Now, of course you don't need to have every single song you own on your ipod at all times. But then you also need to think about the size of apps. some range from a couple hundred KBs to a handful of MBs. In all honesty, if you're gonna keep it for a few years more is better. My 16gig iphone is full of apps and not all my music

Or would that disconnect you? I have an 8 gig. It's got a ton of music on it, not any video though, which eats up more space. 16 g might be nice, but I already have songs on it I skip all the time when they come up, I just don't ever think when I get home to take them off. I do find myself havign to "clean it up" now when I get a new album, which is a bit of a pain. But 8 really does store a lot of songs

I think it depends on your usage, your library size, and how "flexible" you can be with what you carry. My music library is about 20GB and my video library is around 50GB (and expanding by about a GB a month). I have a 32GB touch that regularly contains about 25-28GB of "stuff" on it between audio, video, apps, and podcasts. I rotate the video based on what is going on; most days there are 3-4 movies on it, but on a trip I might load it up with kids movies and fill the device. If you don't use much video or you use SD/crappy video, you could probably get away with the 8GB touch. 64GB is probably overkill for most people. To me, 16GB is the most useless because if you can afford 16GB, you may as well pay the extra $50 or so and double your storage. IMHO, it's either 8GB for entry level users with not much stuff, 32GB for users with larger libraries, or a classic for users that want to carry everything.

Thats a question I can't honestly answer.

My phone is set up to only remember my home network, so it's only a matter for me when at home.

I use a Moto Droid and its not rooted, using latest Firmware, and I talk on phone while browsing quite often.

As an owner of a 8 GB 2nd gen Touch and a 64 GB 4th gen Touch, I can say that, for me, 64 GB is too much and 8 GB is not enough.

When my 8GB 2nd gen Touch was my primary, I had to limit the videos and photos and music I stored on it because I kept bumping against the limit.

Now with my 64GB 4th gen Touch, even with all my music and a bunch of videos and apps, I'm barely using half of the storage. If I had gotten the 32 GB, and didn't go hog-wild like I am now, it would have been plenty.

I actually just got myself a new one of these and so far I'm very happy with it but I'm using it strictly as a toy. I don't have any gen 3 around to compare to but compared to a few gen 2 ones around the office the Retina display looks a lot sharper and brighter. I've been having fun playing with the apps and in some rare instances so far it has been nice having a wifi enabled device without having to get out my laptop. The price doesn't thrill me but I can recommend the product! I haven't had a chance to play with Facetime yet but it seems interesting but sort of a gimmick. These will also likely continue to come down as they are now talking about the iPhone 5 being a mobile hotspot. Not sure if the Touch 5 will duplicate that or not since its not on a phone network but its something to consider.

The VERY first thing I did was to get screen protectors and a case. The screen seems reasonably scratch resistant but the back is the same buffed silver finish that gets scratched if you look at it funny.

I got one of these via an Amazon promo at Christmas.

It does video chat with Skype if you have Wifi. So if you have skypeout or in it may replace your phone (I have a mifi).

You have the Jobs "defective by design" problems - no real GPS, so the only purchase I ever made for it was from Cydia (jailbreak) for a bluetooth GPS program - and with a real 10Hz GPS it is amazing.

Processor is fast enough to run everything.

I have a zoom media plus SD card reader (with app) so I can just play music and read PDFs or view pics from the SD card, so the 8Gb isn't a limitation.

Unlike the 2g/3g version, it has full multitasking so can play things like twit.tv in the background. The microphone is built-in (for skype) but it has a general speaker, not an ear speaker.

It has no GPS since that is apparently part of the cellphone chip, and it has no compass chip, but does have the accelerometer and the gyro. And the front camera is basic but works, not the 5mp of the phone.

In short, nearly all the iOS 4.2.1 technology at an entry price.

8Gb isn't a limit if you stream or rotate through podcasts. It is/would be if you have a decade old library (mine barely fits on my 80Gb classic).

Edit - one other thing some might find useful are the accessibility features such as voiceover (if you want pages read out loud to you) or voice control. It will also pair with a mono phone headset but that doesn't work with everything.

I have a 16GB 2nd Gen, and I keep 2200 songs and several apps (w/ 3 GB still available). My kids have 3rd Gens with 8GB and they're fine.

I would say it boils down to will you be carrying around much video. A normal movie can be 2-4 GB. For just using apps and a decent music collection, 8GB is fine.

How is the Skype on this? I've been thinking of getting a Touch (or maybe the new Galaxy Player) to basically use as a home phone through my wifi.

Can you receive calls normally? Is the speaker and mic good for those purposes (as opposed to just videochatting)?

When the iPhone 3G came out I bought the 8GB rather than the 16GB. AT&T told me I would run out of space. When the iPhone 4 came out the 8GB wasn't an option; the 16GB is the smallest. I had owned the 3G for over a year and still had over 50% of the 8GB available. I believe the 8GB will do fine for most people.

8GB is sufficient for many dozens of apps, a big address book, and thousands of songs, plus podcasts and videos, in modest numbers. In other words, unless you have a huge library of mp3s to transfer this 8gb should be fine for most people.

Download any VoIP app and it's an iPhone without a 2 year contract.
A LOT of people do NOT realize these will make phone calls using WiFi and a proper app like Skype, Vonage, iCall etc...
All you need is a headset. Same goes for the WiFi only iPads. I used an iPod Touch while in Canada to call out using the hotels WiFi and didn't have to pay for any of it. iCall has a free call option as do the others.
