Amazon offered this unit + $50 Amazon Gift Card for $200 with free shipping about 2 months ago, and that was a new unit, not a refurbished. I guess this deal is not hot enough for me to pull the trigger.

That's the NEW price. These are refurbs. But the one I got last time from WOOT was every bit as new.

Anyone know if it assigns you a phone number with your local area code?

Yeah it's refurbished, but 4.5 star average on Buzzillions is pretty dang good.

I do a daily woot blog where I talk about the woot, link to CSEs, find reviews, etc. A few people have told me it's useful. Google "useful linkage" and there it is.

Wow, these things are getting cheaper and cheaper. On the other hand, they're also getting more and more expensive, on the "fee" side. I'm locked in at $11.75 a year (neener neener neener), so I'm happy. I think new adopters will pay around $40 a year. The thing works great. Glad we got it, because we just moved into a condo that requires us to have some type of phone, in order to buzz people in through the front gate (such as the UPS, Fedex guy, or friends). We use it with one of those Uniden 4 handset refurbs that Woot sold a few years ago for around $50 or so.

I got one of these last time they were on woot and I couldn't be happier. No more phone company and I pay 3.47$ a month for phone service. This product does everything they say it does. I highly recommend.

You specify your area (or the area where you want a number - specify area code and prefix), and you pick one of the numbers it offers in that area.

Or you can port your existing number, if you are in an area that's supported - $39.99 alone or free with a year sub to Premier.

Ack, sorry, no. Tried this same model three months ago. They have not conquered the half-duplex problem where one person is talking and they can't hear the other person at the same time.

Also, tech support was comical. 1st, of course, "your connection looks fine to us." 2nd, "can you take this to a friends house where they have dsl or cable?" No, its against my religion to have friends. Besides, your speed tests say it should work here. 3rd, "you can send this unit back to us and buy another." Seriously? Why don't I pay for ten, then you credit me back for nine a few weeks from now?

If you know someone with Ooma, test it out - both of you play music loud enough to hear on the other end. If one of you can't hear some dulcet tones, you may have an issue. I'd love for this to work, qwest SUCKS!! But the echo suppression technology comes at a price. Careful be you.

Got one of these last time (but new). I like it, but it takes about a month to port your phone number (and you can't cancel your service until the process is finished). We also ended up having some problems getting everything hooked up properly--we needed the modem, router, and phone jack all in close proximity. We had to do a fair amount of moving stuff around, but I think it's worth it for the $3.47 a month phone service.

I have the ooma Hub, and it's flat out awesome. In fact, I got mine before the FCC pushed their way in on the process and started assessing taxes. Most folks with even a modest $25/month bill will be even in just a few months. Just get one, and yes, they do work with a Mac.

Can you send/receive fax?

MWPollard

Hmmm, considering getting one as an upgrade. I've got a Hub, and those are end-of-life. It's been working well, but this is 30% off the normal refurb price, and almost half off the new price.

I just don't get it. I used magic jack and it sounds totally fine. vonage sucked and was a monthly cost. magic sound is far superior and I only had one problem in years and they replaced the unit. I leave my computer on all the time anyway so that doesn't bother me. it's $20 a year. why spend $100 and then some additional monthly type of fee. I don't care if the quality is super dang duper. jack sound just fine.

I think I'm in the same boat ($11.75) but hadn't heard that
it was going up. What do you know? btw, mine has been
good enough to discontinue land line...
For those of you considering it: It's GREAT...
I got mine new from Costco (probably wouldn't have taken the
chance, from any lesser company) but I would think a
refurb would be just fine

Yes. Add a specified prefix at the start of the call (most fax machines and software let you set a prefix for the start of all calls) and that will increase the call quality so a fax won't have any problem.
I have my Dish Network DVR connected to one.

Does anyone know if these will connect to a local 911 service?

Don't forget: In emergencies these won't work when the power is out. We've had several massive fires in town. Power was out, cell phone towers destroyed. Old fashion corded phone? worked just fine because they get power from their copper line....

I got the Ooma hub and its great. Wish this Telo had come up first though. But still, I can't complain it does everything it advertises it will do for a lot less than phone company charges.

Not necessarily...With there "premiere service" ($10 a month) you can have the system auto-forward to a cell or land line when the electricity is out.

Got it last time it was on woot. Paid for one year premiere service so I could get the phone with it for free. Voice quality was so much better then my old packet 8 unit. However they still have alot of issues with their software. My phone won't sync with my contact list. People have been having issues with calls going right to voice mail. My call logs haven't been updating right. My outgoing name does not show up on caller id. It didn't work with my 5 year old GE cordless phone system.

I would still recommend getting one cause voice quality is outstanding but just beware not everything may work right.

The service itself is great and will pay for itself within a year.

My only concern is the financial stability of the company itself. It has been around for nearly six years and has always been awash in red ink, has never made a profit, and pretty much looks for new angel investors ever year. That said, they have no problems finding investors, and their current investors have all pretty much stated that they're happy with the company, its performance and product.

I have the Hub not the Telo so I can't comment on the hardware.

I am happy with the service though. The call quality is good and the voicemail works well. I don't have Premier and have never felt like I needed it.

Note that if you have basic Ooma and make a standard rate call, e.g. to family in the UK, there is a connection charge of 3.9 cents. Those really added up for me after a while so I signed up for one of their 1000 mins/month plans which includes all the countries I need to call and the connection fee is waived.
See this link for their international rates.

They will connect to e911, which gets answered nationally and the call info is then routed to local 911. In most areas, the result is the same, just with a different regional accent. If you are concerned, you can get a "lifeline" service from your telco, and the Ooma will automatically use the local line for 911 calls.

If you keep your local service (perhaps as a bare-bones lifeline service), Ooma can fail-over to it on either Internet or power outage.

Ahh it's been awhile since I said something positive and unsarcastic on Woot.

I LOVE MY OOMA!!

About 18 months ago, I bought the older Ooma Core and love the money it's saving me over Vonage or AT&T.

My friends are sick of me raving to them about Ooma. (except the ones who also have it)

The US State Department uses them. That is a step toward company stability. http://www.ooma.com/blog/2010/06/28/u-s-state-department-relies-on-ooma-in-haiti

Anyone know if you can port a Magicjack number over to the Ooma? Wife won't be happy if we have to change our phone number AGAIN although we'd both be glad to eliminate Magicjack's the-PC-must-be-on-to-receive-calls requirement. That being said, MJ just works, it's cheaper and voicemails automatically get emailed to both my wife and I (at no charge). Instead of MJ's $20year, this would cost roughly $41/year but it would also include some minimal energy cost savings (our desktop PC is on most of the time anyway). The Ooma would also allow anyone to play games, watch Netflix or anything else on the MJ-connected desktop. Right now if you try to watch Netflix during a MJ call you'll occasionally get voice breakup on one or both ends of the call. However, this might simply be due to the fact that we're running the MJ on a P4 2.66ghz machine with 1gb RAM rather than a multi-core processor with more RAM.
