Ok, so memory foam is supposedly great if you have a bad back, but what type of affect will it have on Alzheimer's?

I've got an inferiority complex...

But not a very good one.

Having bought a memory foam mattress on woot last year, and despite not being a light person by any means, I've not had many of the problems (such as divots) that other wooters are complaining of. I'm looking at other responses, and seeing some things that may explain this.

Syndil wrote:

I wonder how much of a difference this makes? I am a side and stomach sleeper. Are the people who are uncomfortable back sleepers?

Sianmink wrote:I own a tempurpedic, mattresses of this sort are meant to be used on solid platforms. Use it with a box spring and you will not get good results.

This one really makes me wonder. I didn't have a king frame when I bought this mattress, so I bought an entirely new platform bed, in part to save money by not having to buy box springs as well.

Is this what is making the difference?

Flaeor wrote:
Actually, my receipt says it was a King 8" Cool Wave Memory Foam Mattress so maybe it wasn't the same one. I don't know.

Lastly, there is this. This is also the same one I bought. Is the one I've been using an entirely different mattress?

I wouldn't fold it, but you can cut it easily with an electric carving knife. The last one I ordered was a queen but it was a little misshaped. Used my electric knife... all fixed.

Total junk. We had this on our bed for about a month before the increase in chiropractor visits caused us to throw it into the garage! My husband and I are not overweight by any means and we had "crater"s in a matter of a couple weeks.. Even after rotating it. Save your money

you get what you pay for.. if your lucky. Think about it. Why would something that comes rolled up in a tube, not compress every time you sleep on it. I would not recommend this even at $300. It's comfortable when you first lay in it but by morning you're stuck in a trough.

Got the full size from sellout.woot in September. The only problem was the odor/outgassing issue. 90% of the odor went away after the first week. But the other 10% took two months before it went away completely.

The comfort and support has been uniformly excellent. As for certain other activities, our Kama Sutra cover-to-cover project has continued just fine on this memory foam mattress.

For whatever it might be worth, I've owned two memory foam mattresses (not from Woot). First one was a Dormia, cost about $2000 and lasted just two years before the permanent softening & dent in the middle became unbearable. Second one was a genuine Tempur-Pedic, that cost nearly $3000, and it lasted about 18 months before the same thing happened. In both cases, the warranty was not honored (because those companies look for a dent by placing a straightedge across the mattress and looking for a low spot that has to be greater than a certain number of inches before it counts. That method won't "see" a problem caused by the foam softening and losing support, which is what both of my mattresses did.) Total hassle and waste of money in both cases.

Now, at $300 here from Woot, it might well be worth trying, because your investment isn't as high, so if the thing softens or dents after a year or 18 months, you're not out that much. (And the first few months sleeping on one before it sags is total bliss.)

Just don't expect to buy ANY brand of memory foam mattress, at any price, and have it last for a long time.

Really, I'm not blue, I don't have a ratty beard, and I NEVER wear pink.

I replaced a $700 spring mattress with this foam mattress and it is a lot better!

It did take a couple months for the odor to go completely away but it was well worth it. I wish I had purchased this years ago.

My large dog (110lb Newf mix) very unexpectedly peed on my memory foam bed (the expensive brand). It took 5 days of repeated applications of a gallon of Nature's Miracle (GREAT product), but other than a stain, the bed was ok. We took precautions after that to make sure it never happened again, though, because it was revolting.

I got a full sized one from Sellout about 8 months ago. I frequently travel, and the mattress has probably only been used consistently for about 6 of those months. I'm under 150lbs, and the mattress has not formed any rivets or slumps in it, yet. I do not use it in a bed frame, just plopped it down on the floor and love it.

Pros:

- Very comfortable sleep. Sleeping in a plane or sofa and coming home to a sore neck/back, I couldn't wait to get into my memory foam mattress and sure enough would wake up completely alleviated of my pains.

- Came with removable cover - good for keeping it clean.

- Good for allergies. Notice a great deal of waking up with a stuffy nose due to dust in the mattress. Just be sure to wash your sheets.

Cons

- Chemical smell at first: the mattress had a horrible smell for the first few days. I opened it and left it unwrapped for a few days in a well ventilated room and the smell went down, but didn't completely dissipate for more than two weeks. After that however, there was no smell.

- Gets hot. This ventilated version may alleviate this problem, but mine got rather warm around the body (sucks for summer, nice in winter). Can be solved by using the cover and some nice breathable sheets.

- Some may not like because you semi-sink in. I don't mind it as I like to be cradled by the bed a bit and its not so soft as to where you're completely sunk, but a few inches in for sure. I also take turns sleeping on each side and middle which may the cause of no rivets yet, or it could be that I'm a small person, and it takes longer to wear it down.

Overall, a great price for a nice mattress. I love it and when I travel I can't wait to get back to my bed.

It's been good to me!

I bought this 6 months ago on Woot and was nervous because of all the reviews saying it curshes out in a few months. I haven't seen any difference yet from the day I bought it until now. I also do not sink into it very far like other's claim. Did you let it fully expand when you bought it? I'm not the smallest person, and I think I'm pretty dense (5'8", 165lbs athlete) and it seems great. It's also great for other things...

A lot of my friends have memory foam mattresses they spent much more on and at least at the 6 month mark, there doesn't seem to be a difference in experience.

No regrets here. Though, it did take a very long time to show up in the mail.

ThatPoshGirl wrote:Any chance this will work on a mission style futon frame?

If the futon has slats w/spaces in between them (like most do) then no, it will eventually damage the mattress. I have a tempurpedic bed, and I know that if I do that it will damage it, and void my warranty. However, you can go to a store like Home Depot or maybe Lowe's, and provide them the measurements of your futon frame, and ask them to cut you a slab of say partical board or something of the like, and lay it over the slats. I would suggest first putting some kind of laquer to the board to provide a smooth surface so you're not risking any wood splinters getting into your mattress.

Some thoughts, from a memory foam bed owner (not this one on Woot tho):
A cover is recommended for all memory foam beds. Any liquid (and y'all know what I mean) will create a hard spot in the bed at that point, and it can be very hard to get out (and void the warranty on some beds).

Memory foams beds don't (as others pointed out) come made out of 100% memory foam. However, they are typically made to be used by themselves, so anything underneath other than bare floor or wood is only for looks or height, not for comfort. Of course, a salesperson would love to sell you everything he/she can.

We bought a king-sized bed, and we bought two twin box springs, so we could get them up the stairs and around the corner at the top of the stairs without bending them (and breaking the springs). The mattress is quite bendable without damaging it. Our box springs are zero-deflection, and quite stable.

We have a platform bed, bought online, like IKEA stuff but even less expensive. Two sets of springs and the memory foam mattress. Looks great, feels great after two years, plan on getting at least another 5 years from it (I'm 6', 300lbs, wife is 6" shorter and about 220lbs). HTH!

It stands up wells for awhile then suddenly you've got a big permanent "dent" in the foam. You can't just sleep in the other side since you'll roll in over the night.

You can move it from top to bottom but you can't flip it like you would a regular mattress, I do find it does help to move it

Well this deal was up here a while back (over 1 year ago I think) and I went ahead and purchased it. At first it was pretty cool probably because I had never had memory foam before but now I know it's not very good.

This mattress sags in the middle and causes my husband and I to roll toward the middle of the bed. At first, it was hard for me to tell which side was the right side to have up or down and I flipped it around a few different times to get the best fit. I also had trouble fitting regular queen sized sheets on this bed. You should know it comes wrapped up and you need to have room once you unwrap it for it breathe out and expand to full size for like 2 or 3 days.

It smells very bad, very strong at first but that goes away after the first 2 or 3 weeks I'd say depending on your ventilation system in your house.

Overall it was a less than satisfactory purchase but for $300 it's not terrible maybe for a guest bedroom. Seriously do not purchase this for your main bedding. Sometimes I sleep on my couch to get a break from this mattress.

I would much prefer to have a regular mattress that I tried out first instead of buying a new mattress on a whim. For several months I have had back aches and even leg pains so overall I would say that this mattress is not worth the purchase if it will be used as your main bed ... it might be OK for a guest bed.

I bought a similar mattress from Walmart. It was for a bed from Ikea where the mattress fits into a depression that is the exact Queen size. The memory foam mattress was 2-3 inches longer and did not fit. I had to return it. A regular spring mattress fit just fine. This would not be a problem where the mattress sits on level surface without constraints on the sides.
The mattress came rolled and compressed and after unfolding, there is no way you can get it back into the compact shape it arrived in - which means you need a truck to haul it back for return - or in the case of Woot - to the junk yard.
I even though of cutting it a few inches, but wiser counsel prevailed (spouse).
No complaints about the memory foam mattress itself.

Memory Foam Mattress: Can I Use a Box Spring with My Foam Bed?

ANSWER: NO, UNLESS YOU EVENTUALLY WANT TO END UP SLEEPING IN A CONCAVE PIT.

Memory Foam Mattress: Can I Use a Box Spring with My Foam Bed?

Memory Foam Mattress FoundationThe terms box spring and foundation are used interchangeably and both refer to the base that you put into a bed frame to support the mattress. But the two terms used properly can refer to 2 totally different things.

Box spring originally referred to a group of springs encased in a box and covered with fabric. They were first built from metal, but are now mainly constructed with wood, and both types exist on the market today. Many box springs are specifically constructed to correspond to a given mattress, and the two are sold together as a set. Box springs sold in a set do not offer the proper support to other mattresses. Box springs are meant to give, or compress, when weight is applied. So when you lie down on a mattress set, the springs in the mattress compress and, where the weight is greater, the box spring also compresses.

A mattress foundation looks just like a box spring on the outside, a box encased with fabric, but it is constructed to offer a firm, flat surface to the mattress that will not give or compress. Foundations are the requisite base for a latex or memory foam mattress because they offer a surface that will not compress under body weight.

The softer top layers of a latex or memory foam mattress are meant to conform to and absorb the entire weight of your body while the underlying base foam layers offer a firmer support. When a foam bed is used with a box spring, the base foam layer cannot do its job. Rather than pushing back against your body to provide support, the base foam layer pushes the box spring lower. You end up sleeping in a concave pit with your hips too deep in the bed and your feet and head too high.
