What type of foundation did you use?

An all memory foam bed would not be as supportive as one might think. Even the mack daddy of all memory foam beds (Tempurpedics) are not ALL memory foam.

I purchased one of these through Woot last time they had them, and I love it.

I have a totally messed up back (herniated L4-L5 disks with sciatica in both legs and failed back surgery syndrome), and because of it and my aversion to pain pills, I live a life of constant pain. Before I began sleeping on this mattress, at most I was capable of getting about 4 hours of sleep each night before pain made it impossible to lie down any longer. Now, I am actually capable of getting 6 to 7 hours of sleep nightly thanks to this mattress. I still wake up in pain, but it is nowhere near what it used to be after a night of sleep. I can actually move and do my physical therapy stretching first thing in the morning like I need to in order to get through a day. This mattress has been a life-saver for me.

I will say that this mattress is pretty soft (as opposed to firm). In my opinion, if you sleep flat on your back, you won't like this mattress (or pretty much any other memory foam mattress). If you sleep on your back, I think a firmer mattress would be much more comfortable due to the increased spine support. I sleep on my side, and this mattress keeps my spine in a neutral position. The only time I've slept better was in my ex-girlfriend's Tempurpedic bed.

Since it has a ventilation system, does that mean no 'dutch ovens?'

Then what is the purpose of the airflow channels? I thought that was to keep mattress dry and cool?

Isn't memory foam extremely toxic? I don't see any claims of it being non-toxic. I'd think the manufacturer would make that assurance if they could. Do you want to spend 8 hours a night lying on a carcinogen?

I really agree. My girlfriend and I are about 160 each and I always find a whole in the center that forms. I have the 8" versoin of this I bought on woot some months ago for $250.

If you're prone to 'sleep-chewing', then this is definitely not the mattress for you.

I think that is a little absurd. For something to give you cancer you have to get it into your system. Since you never actually touch the foam, you never ingest it, and its not getting into the air so you aren't breathing it. Therefore its not getting into you and its not bad for you.

I had been planning on remodeling my bedroom last spring and when I found this very same mattress on Woot it was the motivation I needed to pull the trigger. I have to say I couldn't be happier with my decision. I had just gotten a new job at the time so I went all out and bought some nice, high thread count sheets for it and put it on an Asian style platform bed. You don't want to use this with a box spring or put it on a traditional frame bed; it's just not designed for that. I will say that if you purchase this mattress be prepared to spend some time searching for an appropriate bed for it if you don't already own one. You have to give it a few days to expand to its full size and let the smell get out as others have said. After 5 days mine was full size and smell free. It sleeps 2 very nicely and I have never had any divot or indention issues even though I'm a pretty big guy (6' 2", 240 lbs). I sleep better now and never have any sleep related body aches at all any more. All in all I would highly recommend this mattress and would even go so far as to say it's the best thing I've ever bought off of Woot.

We have a $ Queen Temperpedic $. It was not cheap.
Regular mattresses are supposed to be flipped every six Months. In three years we have not flipped it the Temperpedic. We have a plateform bed, no box springs. Box springs are painful and useless. I suggest a platform bed.

talamook wrote:Memory Foam Mattress: Can I Use a Box Spring with My Foam Bed?

ANSWER: NO, UNLESS YOU EVENTUALLY WANT TO END UP SLEEPING IN A CONCAVE PIT.

(snip...)

The softer top layers of a latex or memory foam mattress are meant to conform to and absorb the entire weight of your body while the underlying base foam layers offer a firmer support. When a foam bed is used with a box spring, the base foam layer cannot do its job. Rather than pushing back against your body to provide support, the base foam layer pushes the box spring lower. You end up sleeping in a concave pit with your hips too deep in the bed and your feet and head too high.

So, perhaps my earlier theory about why I'm not having the same problems with my mattress as others is right, then?

I bought a similar mattress back in July. It was the 8" version, but same idea. It lasted me until about September before it began to sag. I had to recently get rid of it because i could feel the box spring below. Granted this has 2" of extra foam, but i doubt that will help. And for those wondering, no Im not overweight. It was just couldn't keep me up. So to speak.

This one really makes me wonder. I didn't have a king frame when I bought this mattress, so I bought an entirely new platform bed, in part to save money by not having to buy box springs as well.

Is this what is making the difference?

----------------------------------------
I'm not sure that's the difference. For both of the memory foam mattresses I've owned, I purchased the specific hard platform that had been designed to go with each one, and I still experienced the softening and dent issues with each.

It certainly would make sense that using the appropriate base ought to help with these issues; that's just not been my experience. (And again, as I mentioned in my earlier post, I didn't get my memory foam mattresses here - one was a Dormia, and the other was a high-end Tempur-Pedic - and neither lasted more than 2 years before becoming intolerable.)

Really, I'm not blue, I don't have a ratty beard, and I NEVER wear pink.

I purchased this on woot over a year ago and I have to say it is a great mattress for the price. Very comfortable. It is not quite as form-melding as some more expensive memory foam mattresses can be, but I like that about it. I don't feel like I'm sinking into a hole. My only issue is that, in spite of the ventilation system, there really isn't a lot of breathability.

Could it be the reason that so many people are saying this bed caves in is because they are using a box spring instead of the proper foundation? These beds are not designed to be put on top of a box spring. Please tell us what type of foundation you are using!

Well I hate to admit it but I read all 7 pages of comments and I have to say I honestly think i'm more confused now then when I started. For every NO there is a YES. I guess it really is a personal preference. I don't think this bed it the best quality so i'll pass this time...

I bought this exact mattress in July 2010 and there is now a groove in the middle where I lay that will never go away. It has gotten so bad that I will toss the darn thing because it hinders sleep. My weight is 170 pounds so the grooving isn't overstress to the product, it just doesn't do what the sells said it would.

Well I got mine today. Big sticker says: STOP! Do not use knife. Use scissors to slit open. So I got my wife who is better at things like that than I am to do it. And she still slit the cover! So be careful. Not sure who she did it.

The cover has kind of a finished side and an unfinished side. Right now it feels to me like the finished side is the bottom. Maybe it will feel different when it opens up.

No noticeable smell, by the way. From the previous posts, I was worried it would be horrible, but nothing. On the other hand, my wife is pouty because it looks thin -- I keep telling her it will expand. Make up your own joke.

The mattress expanded to a depth of 8 inches and not the 10 inches as advertised. It is supposed to be a queen size but queen sized sheets don't come close to fitting properly. The mattress is very firm and if there is memory foam in this mattress I can't find it. I'd rate this a poor purchase.

bfarriii wrote:The mattress expanded to a depth of 8 inches and not the 10 inches as advertised.

We just finished airing it out and put it on the bed so I'll let you know. My initial impression was wrong. the finished side has bumps which are the ventilation system.

my expanded lopsided. one end came close to 10" -- especially if you measure the fattest points. The other is closer to 8" or 9 if you use the most generous measurement.

Sheets fit ok on mine. My wife was concerned that it was really firm so she put the memory foam pillow top we had bought a few years back on it (purchased from Target).

So the real tests will be sleeping on it and um... er... how it handles "activity".

The smell, by the way, was really mild on mine, aired out almost completely, and with bed clothes on it is indetectible. But I was expecting some smell like having my head in a can of paint thinner and that wasn't the case even right away.

Okay, I have see tons of posts about the mattress, I have but one comment/issue. I bought the queen size mattress and after 72 it finally rose to the height it should be...only one problem, my queen size sheets don't come close to fitting and it barely fits between the head and foot board. Any suggestions? I thought about buying king size sheets but not even sure those will work. In the interm, we are using the flat sheets only until we can decide what to do. I agree with some, it does get some getting used to, but so far not bad.

tamcap wrote:I think that at some point during the last woot offer people were mentioning some smells that go away after few days of use. If you guys bought this mattress earlier, did any of you have any of those "smelly" problems?

I bought one and installed it 2 days ago. It does have a substantial odor; my wife claims its a mildew odor, I felt it was more of a chemical odor (until she put mildew in my brain).
Doing a Google search for Memory foam odor, there is something called "off-gassing", and this is a known issue. I keep stripping the bed each morning and turn the ceiling fan on high all day. 2 days in and we still have the odor. If it was summer, I'd put it out on the deck in the sun, but....its not.
I'll update as the smell goes away (hopefully), otherwise I love the bed!
