Initially I read this - not as watching movies at home - but rather as watching home movies. In that context, the idea of renting seemed a little voyeuristic.

Then I wondered what the market would be like for renting out people's home movies.

Then I realized that YouTube is basically a collection of previews and teaser trailers for said movies.

Oh,and I DO still have some of those! I even had One 4-Track tape, which I gave to my cousin to keep for the next 20 years or so. Right now I am looking at a short stack of reel-to-reel tapes of Walt Disney interviews. I do hang on to some interesting stuff! If I can just get my Old player working, and get these into my computer!!?

No...I will be happy with my LG, I am sure. It was just eerily creepy that this should show up here just after I made the purchase. And, not having any previous experience with Blu-Ray, I was just a bit concerned with my $200 purchase after seeing this.
All is good.

I am confused. Someone else said the player only lets you see the instant queue. I didn't know you can see the previously watched, and genres also. So since you can see the genres, can you add to your queue from there? Anyone can help clarify this? Thanks

I can't speak directly about this player but I'd be very wary about anything electronic from Memorex. They started out making tape for computer storage and later branched out to the consumer market with cassette tapes and floppy discs. Here is a classic Memorex commercial featuring jazz legend, Ella Fitzgerald, circa late 70's/early 80's. Their oft-quoted tagline was: "Is it live -- or is it Memorex?" and ads always showed a glass being shattered by the human voice.

In other words, Memorex specialized in magnetic media, not consumer electronics, and frankly, its consumer presence became irrelevant after the 80's. Like so many once-great American companies -- i.e. Bell & Howell, Polaroid, Sylvania -- Memorex is now simply a brand name being sold from conglomerate to conglomerate, and most often stamped on cheap generic Chinese-made electronics. They neither design nor manufacture the products. As such, support is virtually non-existent, i.e. no driver and firmware updates, and the user interfaces are usually frustratingly bad. And of course, the instructions are often laughably translated -- if you're lucky. Otherwise, they're just cryptic and useless.

This is not to say that this Blu-Ray player is bad. Just keep in mind that you'll likely be on your own.

Half a brain? Er, some of us:

1) Enjoy the extras that come with DVDs/BRs. As a cinemaphile, I like the director's commentary, alternate endings, etc.

2) Sometimes enjoy watching movies where there is no broadband, i.e. in a car, while camping, etc. Sorry, I have no plans on getting 4G. And some people, i.e. my parents, don't plan on getting broadband in any form.

3) Like the artwork that comes with DVDs. Why do you think records are making a resurgence? It certainly isn't for the convenience or fidelity (most users don't have the equipment for optimum sound). Collectors often cite the artwork.

4) Like old or obscure movies that may not make it LEGALLY online, but have been previously released on DVD.

5) Don't like our tea viewing habits tracked.

I was focused on the same line of thought... my amp doesn't pass audio.

But, I noticed that my HDTV had audio out via optical. So, I turned everything around and fed all the HDMI cables into the TV, instead of the amp. Next, I ran the audio fiber from the TV (out)to the amp (in).

Now, instead of using the amp to switch the HDMI, I use the TV. It breaks out and passes the audio from whichever HDMI port is selected, and sends it down to the amp (and my nice surround sound speakers).

Just a little food for thought:

1. I haven't seen many comments on the difference in AUDIO quality of BluRay vs streaming. Believe it or not, the audio of BluRay discs (lossless TrudHD, DTS-Master, etc) absolutely blows away the simple Dolby PLII compressed audio of Netflix. I doubt we will see the advanced audio soon from Netflix because of the bandwidth requirements. The difference is amazing.
2. MANY TVs put out simple stereo through it's digital coax or optical out, not Dolby 5.1 or higher if the input is anything other than the built in ATSC tuner of the TV. So, hooking up your HDMIs to the TV then going "digital out" to your amp really doesn't give you very high quality surround sound. Better to invest in an A/V receiver with multiple HDMI inputs and a single output to your HDMI in on your TV. You get tremendous flexibility in your hookups AND much better audio.
3. For those of you having trouble getting garbled or no output even when using HDMI direct from your BluRay to your TV - - Blame the motion picture industry, not Memorex or your TV. The digital rights handshake that is supposed to take place between your BluRay and your TV over HDMI is imperfect and poorly defined.
4. If your not getting HD from Netflix, look at two things: a)is the movie HD in the first place? and b)is your broadband/WiFi connection fast enough to support it? If not, Netflix will "fall back" to the best resolution that your connection can support.
5. There are multiple implementations of the GUI to Netflix, even among models of the same brand. My Pana***** BluRay can only access my Instant Queue but my Pana***** plasma can access movies from different categories that are not in my Instant Queue.
6. SERIOUSLY look for a player that has an applet for accessing Amazon on Demand, particularly if you are an Amazon Prime member. They are streaming movies for free to Prime members and and the selection is pretty good. Netflix moves their movies around a lot. I was watching a multiple disc/multiple episode series on Netflix and shortly after watching the 25'th of 50 episodes, they moved it to the DVD only queue and I was out of luck until I waited (forever) for the next one to arrive in the mail. Plus, I have to wait for the next 3 or 4 discs to arrive, one by one, basically delaying my access to the newer more popular titles that were in my queue.

You can't stream blu-ray quality quite yet.
There are many people who don't live in an area where the "broadband" is fast enough.
Many people are limited to 1 Megabit, 2Megabit, or.. even worse.. Dialup or Satellite that's even slower.

I got a similar problem with my player as well: Every time I try to power it off (either through the remote or the power button on the unit), the player completely freezes and the only way to get it to respond again is by unplugging the power cord then plugging it back again. This is driving me nuts and I've already contacted Woot to request returning this defective unit.

This Memorex Blu-Ray player sucks friends. Defective right out of the box. Unit has to be unplugged then replugged to get it to turn on. Bad capacitors? Remote is something else. 100 ft pounds of pressure to change functions. You might as well control it sitting on top of the player. The unit comes complete with horrible Memorex support. You must email tech support everything, including your birth certificate and first born, to get an RMA. Does Woot always buy defective product to resell to us?

I'm having the same problem. The player works great, but the majority of the time I have to unplug the unit and plug it back in to get it to turn on. This has never failed me, it will always turn on after a reset by unplugging, but I'm afraid it will stop working someday. Not to mention it is VERY annoying, and I shouldn't have to deal with that. I think I will just deal with it until the warranty is almost up, and then send in for a new one.

Submit a request to RMA the product here:

http://www.memorex.com/en-us/Support/Contact-Support/?p=1988

As far as a return and getting money back I'm not sure if that's a possibility.

I submitted an RMA request because I have to reset mine each time I want to turn it on (by unplugging, plugging back in, and then holding down the on button on the unit for a few seconds - sometimes takes 2-3 times but always turns on). They emailed me a form and information... but I decided to wait until a month or two before my 1 year warranty is up so maybe they will have fixed that by that time...

I would NOT recommend this product. Bought from Woot about 8 months ago. Have to unplug this thing about once a week to get it to un-freeze. When it DOES work, it is verrrry slow to respond to the remote. Get a better brand and do not deal with the hassles to save a few bucks. Does not support Amazon Prime streaming.
