WRONG. it can do whatever you configure it to. If it didn't broadcast how could you send out requests to reach a website?

richellelander wrote:A Tivo series 1 or 2 maybe.

I had a Series 2 Tivo, and the only USB wifi adapter that was guaranteed to work (at least at that time), aside from Tivo's own adapter at 3x the price, was a very specific hardware/firmware version of a Netgear WG111 adapter.

I wouldn't bet on this one working with a Series 2.

However, for more info, check out the Which network adapters work with my TiVo box? page.

Linksys makes a simple bridge...I forget the model but you configure it from your home computer and then unplug it and use it whereever. I'm using one for a Blu-Ray that does not have a built-in network adapter.

Improviz wrote:Remember folks, this is USB (hopefully 2.0) so the MOST you'll get is 10mbps throughput, as you are capped by USB speed. Realistically, you'll get less speed than that. So don't think this is going to give you even the 54mps that a regular Wireless G connection from built-in wireless will get you. You are probably not going to stream HD video with this thing.

Umm, USB 2.0 gets up there around 480 Mbps.

HMMMMMMMMMMM Does anyone know if plugging this into a printer will allow it to be converted to wireless capable? Would be great if it does.

No. This is a USB wireless receiver, so it does not broadcast a signal at all. In order for the DS to connect to the internet, you will have to configure your router settings so it uses a WEP encryption instead of a WPA. If, for some crazy reason, your router doesn't support WEP, you'll have to buy a new router.

Tufflaw wrote:Question: If I'm at work where I don't have wi-fi, can I plug this into my work computer which has an ethernet connection and then use a wi-fi device off that connection? (ie: ipad)?

YES.

ok, is what you need to do is turn on internet connection sharing in windows and set it to share on the Wireless card...you will also need to set it up for ad-hoc and act as access point (which means wireless device to wireless device without a wireless router - this is the part most people can't figure out how to do but it's out there just google) so the wireless in your machine will become an access point. As for setting up the iPad I don't know the details having never tried to set one up. But configure the iPad to look for a wireless network and it should find it and be able to connect...

You may have to bridge the adapters in your machine... just highlight them both and right click and tell them to bridge but you shouldn't need to do this as internet connection sharing should provide all the connections necessary.

This of course assumes your work gives you the power to do that on your machine, but technically it can be done. I have done it both ways, with a xbox wired to a desktop with a wireless adapter to the router and also a PS3 to a laptop over wireless with the laptop plugged into the router with a physical cable.

The shipping kills it. buy.com has it for $12.99 shipped. Would get it a LOT faster but I'm in for one here to save the buck (plus tax). But agreed, $3.99 plus $5 should be plenty to be a woot deal. Shipping this can't cost the entire $5.

It does broadcast a signal, but it does not create a wireless network. If it couldn't broadcast a signal, it would not allow the device to request any information i.e. browse the web

It's all about the intr4webz servers. Your browser loading speed is really just a tiny part of the equation. Their servers get hammered, and it connects however many it can, the rest just get hung up.

A few questions for you experts:

1. I have an old HP laptop running Windows XP that has a built in g card and a Netgear g router. Can I use this to increase my speed? Do I just plug it and it will work or do I need to install something?

2. I have a Panasonic Blu Ray player that is somewhat old but has BD Live capabilities (if I recall). Could I plug this into it and access my router from it to use the BD Live stuff?

What do you mean it doesn't broadcast a signal at all? How exactly do you think networks work? You don't receive a single packet of data without also broadcasting something back (the ACK packet saying you got it). And outbound connections (like asking a web server for a webpage, sending an email...)? You think they're just magically communicated to the internet without sending anything?
