1. I have an old HP laptop running Windows XP that has a built in g card and a Netgear g router. Can I use this to increase my speed? Do I just plug it and it will work or do I need to install something?

No on the blu-ray and yes on the laptop. However, with the laptop, you should disable the G card through device manager before attempting to install this one. Follow the directions in the box on installation.

Irrefutable proof, as it is a well known fact that Amazon.com hates bacon.

try again... closer but still wrong. Broadcast is a broadcast. I promise you i could configure this wireless adapter to function as a full router with proper services running on the computer. DHCP, DNS, ETC.

Does your printer have a USB port (other than the usb type A port that the cable goes into)?

1. Just install the software that comes with it and plug it in. Should approximately double your speed to the router

2. Not likely. USB devices like this usually requre a driver to be installed on the 'host machine' - but somewhere above someone posted that it works with WD TV LIVE which I also wouldn't expect it to work with, so who knows...

There goes the jumping bar again. I'm convinced that Woot is doing that to screw with all the Wootalyzer users out there.

You people are getting two things confused with each other.

this USB dongle allows you to connect wirelessly to a router. yes the signal is two way, receive and send.

this USB dongle is NOT a REPEATER or wifi hub.

that means you cannot connect other portable devices to it, and then use it to access the internet. This device only allows your computer that you plug it into to access your router which connects to the internet.

besides, if you have a wireless router in your house already, you can just set your phone or device to connect directly to it.

Thanks! But if I disable the G card, does that mean if I have problems with this adapter for some reason (or whatever), then I cannot use my internal card? (As you can tell, I'm loathe to mess with the internals.)

I wouldn't bet on this one working with a Series 2.

However, for more info, check out the Which network adapters work with my TiVo box? page.

Plugged it in, and am having driver problems (Windows 7)

Found a driver on the SMC site but no idea how to install it:

http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=viewProduct&localeCode=EN_USA&cid=5&scid=117&pid=1694

edit: for the computer-challenged like myself, I did this on Windows 7 by right clicking computer > properties > device manager > (SMC device name) > then update drivers, and selected location on my computer from where I unzipped the driver to. Works like a charm now.

Did the SMC utility install on Windows 7? Without it, you can't configure the device.

Did anyone try this on a computer that is Windows XP? And if I already have a wireless adapter in the laptop, will it affect that if I use this instead? If I hate this or have problems with it, I don't want to be out of luck with reverting to what I already have/use. Thanks.

Installed this on a very old gateway laptop running xp pro service pack 3. Works like a champ. I had to use the extension because the adapter couldn't fit into the usb port.

edit: Without the extension I got a steady green light and couldn't set up a profile. So it took me a while to figure out that it wasn't connected properly. Once I used the extension, I had a flashing green and I was able to set up the profile.
