Does anyone know whether you can write on this with a stylus, like you can on a tablet laptop?

Is there a kindle app for it?

Or since I'm lazy should I just wait for iPads to get cheap?

Rooting is easy, lot's of step by step guides on the internet. And it is 100% free, that is what open-source is all about!

And yes, there is a Kindle app

Woot's writer forgot one benefit:

• Help your phone's battery get through the day and night by shifting much of your goofing off to a tablet platform

It is obviously not an iPad Deuce.

Obviously not an iPad device? How so? What does that even mean? One can just as well say that the iPad is obviously not an Android device. Or a Windows device. Or a Mac X device.

For my money, given the short lifespan of these hi-tech devices, I'd rather spend less than more. I'd certainly feel less pain replacing this device in 2 years than I would replace a $600 iPad.

I use XBMC on a small form factor frontend. There are currently 3-4 compatible xbmc remote control apps on android market. The stock one has been my favorite on my HTC slide.

The problem is you would have to tweek this to get it to use the android market (I am not sure if the gmarket has an xbmc remote).

That said you probably should load a custom rom on the thing anyway to get rid of all the bloat they put on there.

To answer your question the xbmc app works fantastically with a xbmc media center. It works under all platforms and I currently enjoy it running on a 1.8ghz core duo with 2 GB of ram and 150 GB hard drive using ubuntu. On this media center I also host a minecraft server for 4-8 people at a time. It handles all the 720p content I throw at it without problems.

I am pretty sure other media center programs have remote control apps that work on wifi to control your media center. You could also control it via 3g if you fiddled with your router and password protected the remote control interface (not hard to do).

I so long for a tablet, but I am so technologically challenged.

I don't even know what rooting means. *blush* What is it?

How hard is all this adapting you all are talking about? I'm fine with following directions and all, but if I run into any snags I'm not going to be tech savvy enough to fix things on my own. Should I just wait for a better out-of-the-box tablet to come along? Be honest. I had already resigned myself to waiting anyway....

Thanks for any advice!

There are apps you can buy (not sure of free ones) that let you edit Excel/spreadsheets, but it would be a pain in the butt unless you bought a blutooth keyboard. (~$40)

NightGhost wrote:I was looking at various tablets in the Verizon store today, and had a few thoughts.

Big issues for me: I love the "instant on." I like the idea of whipping out my tablet and surfing almost immediately.

Screen size: actually, it's hard to make up my mind. The screen on my iPod touch is annoyingly small for surfing, but this and the iPad won't even fit in a cargo pants pocket. Maaaybe a large coat pocket. I like a big screen, but I want to be able to have my hands free as well.

PRICE!!! These things are too darn expensive for me right now. This Woot price is tempting, but this won't do everything the iPad or Xoom does. The Samsung Galaxy Tab was interesting too.

Thickness: If anything, the iPad is so thin that I wonder if that makes it somewhat fragile. I certainly wouldn't mind something a bit thicker.

3G vs. wifi: I'm lucky to live where public wifi and vendors wifi is so common that I would rarely need anything else. But that's just me.

My verdict: This has a lot of positives, but some major negatives that other Wooters have posted about. I'm going to wait for the market to settle, and prices to drop.

@NightGhost Two words: Nook Color. Two more words: Root it.

I paid $250 for my Nook Color, rooted it into a tablet.

Lot's of step by step guides to do it, but snags do happen! If you have any tech savvy friends you can always ask them to help you. The best out of box tablets right now are Moto Xoom or iPad, but they cost a lot more than this.

Rooting means taking complete control of your device, so you can install what you want without manufacturer restrictions. That is the simple way to explain it at least

This is an intel chip.. not ARM, so you should be able to install windows on it. This is not very comparable with the ipad or xoom because of the different architecture, but 1.66 GHz is very comparable to a netbook.

Fantastic tablet, I have one and love it to pieces! Very snappy and responsive with the Tegra 2 chipset and a capacitive screen.

Three crucial points:

-The original firmware stinks on ice, scoot over to xda-developers and grab one of the improved firmware builds, install and root. Personally I use TnTlite.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=841 the market fix has to be applied occasionally but is very simple.

-The screen is not IPS and has some angular variations, not bad but slightly annoying in portrait mode. Easily resolved by tilting the unit ~10 degrees.

-This doesn't run honeycomb YET. But with the very beefy hardware expect a build in a few months.

Tips:
-Grab a 8-16GB microSD and install to augment the already huge memory.

-A standard cheapo USB keyboard works fine on this wireless units work great as well.

-This is a rebranded Malata ZpadT2 so all the accessories work especially the dock w/ HDMI, extra USB and Ethernet port.

-This has a 10.1" 16:9 display so widescreen video fills the screen.

-Nice accessory store here

in for another!

This is the model that came out with the nVidia Tegra 2 and runs 2.2.

There was another Viewsonic that came with a Intel Atom which dual booted Windows and Android 1.6 but I'd rather have this one with the Tegra.

I currently use the program Teamviewer (free for personal use) to remote access my PCs. My HTPC is running Linux Mint and i've installed teamviewer on it. The HTPC sits in a closet 15 feet away from my TV so using wireless keyboard/mouse wouldn't work so well. What I ended up doing is installing the teamviewer app on my netbook to control my HTPC remotely. In a pinch, I can also use my iphone with the teamviewer app too.

I suppose if you can access the android market with this tablet and download the teamviewer app, you can do the same thing.

All of this is done over Wifi and very easy to set up.

Well the guys over at XDA already have Honeycomb running for the Nook, but this tablet should be getting it soon. Just realize that out of the box the iPad is going to seem much better, but in the long run after you customize this tablet to your liking you will realize it was a better choice, but that is just my opinion

You'll need 3rd party software to do editing. I think QuickOffice is Pro is $7.99. Free software is available for viewing.

Does the thing have DRM built in? As in if Netflix ever makes an app for Android it will work on this device? I hear if/when Netflix releases an app it probably will not work on older devices because of DRM junks

But if it's true that you can put some type of Windows on this then I guess silver-light would work on it?

Edit:
NVM this is ARM not Intel like someone stated aka no windows

The Tegra2 is the same chipset as the xoom and is the reference chipset for Honeycomb. (The viewsonic does not have a honeycomb build yet!)

How does this tablet stack up against the Archos 101? I have the Archos, but I have found its hardware to be a little lackluster; they put just enough processor and RAM in it to kick it out the door and start selling. Oh, well. That's the risk we take.

If you want to read eBooks go with the Nook. If you want Games and such perhaps this will work.
The ergonomics on this kinda blow, but on the NookColor you'll likely want to remap the volume keys since it only has a single hard control key and software menu & back keys

Have both a rooted Nook Color and this Tablet (rooted) the nook has a better (but smaller) screen, a wimpier processor (OMAP 3621), no bluetooth support integrated and no ports other than one USB. The nook requires transcoded video, while this unit is fine with most video straight out the box.

If portability is crucial go with the Nook, if size and processing power are more important grab this. Root either one immediately.

Perversely, the nook can already run honeycomb.

No windows, no silverlight. Haz DRM (if you are into that kinda stuff) but no Netflix yet.

The devs over at XDA are working on getting Honeycomb running on this tablet, but are waiting for nvidia to release some source code they need, once that happens that can get it working. They are hoping for it to be released by the end of the month.
