hi, I'm not the vendor, but I play one on TV.

I wooted myself one, for several reasons. I can't see paying the $500 plus that the IPad 2 cost, plus the IPad 2 may be hard to find due to some of its parts being made in Japan

512mb system ram and 16gb flash ram. Likely available flash ram is less because they usually use it for rom to store the OS.

theguruguys wrote:I am considering between this and a Nook color. After reading various sites, and the comments here, I have come to the following summary:

The Nook color has a better screen and smaller form factor.

The Gtab seems to win almost every other category, including much better processing and video gpu.

They both have to be rooted and custom rom to be fully functional, although the gtab current firmware has an option to use Android 2.2 instead of their 'touch and tap' out of the box, making it a bit more functional out of the box than the Nook color.

Am I leaving anything major out?

I wish I didn't have to pay Texas tax to woot, it brings the price up to $305 total for me, a Nook color costs about $50 less than that locally, making my decision a bit more difficult.

Furthermore, I bet this sells out pretty fast so I am tempted to buy tonight...

Don't forget to calculate the tax on the Nook Color though...I was forced to shell out TN tax on the eBay deal, since B&N has a location within the state - brings the difference to about $30, though the gTablet is worth the extra either way!

Edit:

Both the PlayOn PC and device should be connected directly to the same router (on the same IP "subnet"). Advanced networking setups using additional network interfaces such as virtual adapters (VPNs) or Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) may work, but are not officially supported

Actually, there is a remote setup in PlayOnTV. You have to use the Android's web browser, and it requires Flash support. I use Dolphin.

The answer to your question is: "Yes. You can stream to a remote device across the Internet-at-large.

The configuration is under PlayOn Settings -> Mobile Access Tab -> Enable Mobile Access.

You need to set your Windows firewall (if you use it) to permit the MediaMall application full access. Then I use a manual port as my connection port.

Setup is on Page 6-7 of the PlayOnUserGuide.pdf

Nook Color is $249 locally which makes it $270.61 after tax.

I just paid $303.09 for this on on woot after tax and the shipping discount for a difference of $32.48. So you are right on target

I'm not so much looking to taking this with me everywhere so 7" vs 10" isn't really that big of a deal. I'm familiar with flashing Android devices so I look forward to rooting and flashing it. Is there a consensus on which ROM is the most stable to go with?

So is the only way to hook this up to a TV is via HDMI with the sketchy dock that is $66 off eBay or $45 from here no OEM cables/docks? and I'm guessing this dock connector is proprietary, no industry standard?

I'm still on the fence with this. The really only negatives for me is no Netflix without spending an extra $60 a year with PlayOn.TV and no built in GPS but there is a way to rig that up too.

How many frames/sec is remote desktop via 3G? Can I stream Netflix at my home PC and see it on this thing?

But my current credit card ballance is $.70 Hummmmm

Lots of blah blah blah, now for some real info on this tablet:

The stock ROM on this tablet is called "Tap N Tap." You are going to want to get rid of that within ten minutes of owning it. You can find custom ROMs for this device on the XDA website. If you read the tutorial, even a beginner can flash this thing. I am currently running Vegantab 5.1, which is running flawlessly. Once the AOSP for Honeycomb is released, expect a 3.0 build for this device. I have the dock, and it is great for outputting movies to my television. The viewing angles kinda blow, but when it comes to performance, this thing STOMPS the Nook, and any of those other single-core tablets. This thing has a regular USB port, which means that you can easily plug in a keyboard or mouse, something that cannot be done with the Xoom. Also, it has native support for flash drives. Someone asked about using a stylus, unless you can find one that supports capacitive devices, you are out of luck. If you are looking for a tablet with INCREDIBLE specs, but don't want to waste $800 on the Xoom, (which doesn't have a full USB port) I suggest buying this tablet. I paid $400 for it in December. My first video chat from the subway validated the purchase.

The Vegan ROMs for it are great. It is pretty much a vanilla Android experience, with a few tweaks to accommodate the device.

Oh I'm so mad! I bought one of these just two weeks ago for $350! It was a deal at 350 but is an insane deal for this price.

There is an excellent community built around this tablet with several good custom ROMs. Honestly, if you want full functionality from your tablet you are going to have to root it and install a custom ROM. This will get you a considerable boost in speed, Android Marketplace, and access to a bunch of apps you otherwise wouldn't have.

The guts of this thing are very similar to the XOOM except that it has 512MB of DDR2 RAM instead of 1GB. Honestly, I don't see the need for the extra 512MB. I use my G-Tablet for PDF editing, reading, and watching videos and I've never felt it lag or slow down*.

*I've rooted and am running TNT 5.0.1 so I have an awesome performance boost compared to their stock software.

It's a good tablet and this is an insane price. I wish I had known about it so I could have saved a few more dollars but either way I am happy with my purchase.

I use a stylus to highlight text on PDFs for my classes. I would imagine with the right app and the right stylus it would work well. The problem is that it is a capacitive screen so any touch from you will register, not just touches from a stylus.

Is there a kindle app for it?

Or since I'm lazy should I just wait for iPads to get cheap?

Honestly, compared to rooting phones and other Android devices, it is VERY simple to do for the G-Tablet. If you decide to grab this tablet head over to XDA developers (google it) and they have step-by-step processes. You don't need to know programming language you just need to know how to follow directions.

Once you install a custom ROM and get Android Marketplace working on it, you can simply install androids Kindle app.

TheQuicksilver wrote:FWIW, I have one. If you want a tablet, get this one. $100 off anywhere else right now.

Here's the deal, the default TnT interface blows. Go on the XDA Developers forums though and get the VEGAn- or TnTLite ROMs and install them, and you'll never look back. My biggest gripe is the screen doesn't have great viewing angles. Otherwise, the thing is a workhorse. Battery life is great (10+ hours), connectivity is good, weight is nice, and it's damn peppy. You're getting the same CPU as the Xoom as well. No GPS, which is a marginal inconvenience at best.

Yea, the viewing angles suck, but unless you are sharing the tablet to watch something you really won't notice. Also, there are apps on the marketplace to tether your phone's GPS to work on the G-Tablet. Does anyone really need two GPA devices on them at all times?

I have the tablet and its a GREAT price / performance. Its very similar to the Xoom for 200 bucks cheaper.

Only downside - the screen needs specific angle. I would have loved if they upgraded the screen by a bit. Not horrid, but not as good as others. One person only viewing for sure.

The good side
There is a 50 doc that has a true rj45 cable for desktop type usage.

How to use it... open box. plug in. find website to root (10 minutes) and download another rom (30 minutes) and install (30 minutes first time, 10 after).

Now you have a great android tablet that when docked can have a mouse and keyboard.. pick up and walk across the room...

btw, I found it for 350 bucks a week ago, and 50 bucks for the dock. So 400 bucks, a wireless keyboard and mouse and I have a decent little computer / tablet. I'm considering buying one for my mother.

That's when I swoop in and use it!

I have this tablet
This thing is an absolute workhorse.

Best recommendation - Kill the rom that comes with it head over to XDA and install Gomji's gingerbread Vegan rom then add clymson's gingerbread kernel.

Just read the tutorials or watch them on youtube. It is not hard to modify this device at all.

Also It is almost 99% unbrickable, because even if you totally hose the partitions the device contains a mode where you can manipulate it from a computers command line called APX

Great Tablet people would be foolish to pass this by.

Software recommendations
PDF reader - Beam reader (only purchased software I have done for android)
Weather - Weather Channel
Browser - Dolphin HD
VPN - Juno Pulse
Application Managment - App Center
File transfer - Drop Box (put in akodoreign recomended you :D end shameless plug)

Oh and the rom I recomended has a full market but doesn't have a my apps button (well has one but doesn't show your apps) so app center fills that hole)

720p is hard to do right now as no software supports NVIDIA hardware acceleration.

Nvidia only recently released stable drivers for their GPU (go figure heh, least they didn't make them overheat, lol)

So 480p works well right now - 720p shouldn't be to hard when they get hardware acceleration for NVIDIA built into player software.

Yes once Google gets past the whole motorola exclusivity time frame (aka other tablets are released).

They need to release the NVIDIA source code and it will be an easy port (same hardware except screen)
