nnbj92 wrote:I have a question, specifically with the tnt lite ROM. I am reading the instructions and following them to prepare myself when my gtab comes.

I am stuck at this step:

Extract the RAR to the root of your internal memory. So, for example, if your device is mounted on your Windows F drive, you need to extract the RAR so that you have an F:\update.zip file and an F:\recovery folder.

I extracted the RAR in a regular folder to see how it would extract and could not find a update.zip file. I came to the conclusion that the zipped update folder is the file that I am looking for. Can someone confirm that or help me find it?

Windows user? Some have complained on my use of RAR, since it's not supported OOTB on Windows. Did you try 7z or Winrar, instead?

Btw, I use RAR specifically to differentiate between the original package and the update.zip inside. I used to get complaints that users could not differentiate between the original ZIP and the update.zip inside, so I changed to RAR.

donatom3 wrote:Normally Woot would ship via smartpost (Smartpost means Fedex picks it up delivers it to the regional post office closest to you and then the post office does the final delivery to your house). That option is slower and depends on how far you are from where they're shipping which is generally Texas. The page for the G Tablet said they were using Fedex Ground. For me in California that means 3 business days from Texas. If it ships on Monday I would have it Thursday. Texas is fairly centralized so they're 3-4 days to most of the country and 1-2 if you're closer.

Unless you're overseas like me. Then you get:
Your order for 1 ViewSonic gTablet 10.1" Multi-touch Tablet on 03/23/2011 has been recently shipped via SMARTPOST.

This may have already been provided (I've been trying to keep up, but so many posts!)but as a new tablet owner looking to Root and Rom for the first time, the best post I found was this one:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245&highlight=i%27ve+never+rooted+anything

Of course, it's on XDA - had never seen the site before, but I am definitely a big fan now. Big shoutout to all the Devs over there.

Yes I am running Windows 7 64bit. I used 7-zip to extracted gtab_tnt_lite_v4.30.rar . After it is extracted I am left with two folders a Recovery and a zipped Update folder. I believe the latter is the update.zip file that is mentioned in the directions. Is that correct?

That's correct. Both of those would get dropped to the drive where the device is mounted.

You're not alone. I ordered by 3am CST, and am in the same situation.

I attempted to contact Fedex to manually verify the number, but the support personal told me the tracking system is not currently available. This may be a case of call metric rigging, but i don't think so.

One of Woot's support reps earlier in the thread recommend giving it a day or so, starting today, and then contacting them. That's my plan at the moment.

Not only did I get my FedEx info, but my tracking number ended in 1337. That's fate, my friends. If only Woot would allow pick-ups, since I'm only 6 miles from their office.

Awesome. I ordered mine at 1:30am, got my tracking number Friday at 3:30pm and FedEx still doesn't recognize it as a valid tracking number. I'm in Idaho, so maybe it will show up before FedEx realizes they shipped it.

@roebeet

You have been INCREDIBLY helpful and I really appreciate all the work all the devs are doing over on XDA.

I had a question about one of the Kernel postings. At http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895825 where they are talking about Clemsyn's Kernel is this for Froyo or Gingerbread? I didn't want to ask there as it seems like a simplistic question, but the title lists both kernels in the name and I doubt it installs in both.

As a secondary question, I assume you just download the zip, rename to update.zip, put in root and flash to install these?

Thanks again for the help!!!

Yes, it is three days to NJ. Remember, it's FedEx ground, not SmartPost. Somebody posted a color coded map on the previous page. All of NJ is in "orange" area for 3 days. That means 2 days to get from TX to NJ and delivery on day 3. So it all adds up...

Luckily I live in the small part of NY that is too in a 3 day radius. So I'm hoping for a Thursday delivery!

Just go to the blog post for the tablet, scroll down to the squaretrade box in the description, click the link, click buy now, and it'll take you to the squaretrade site, woot discount included! I added the warranty the day after with zero problems.

@Roebeet

If I may ask... I plan to use your TNT 4.2.3 rom when my G-tab gets here. I just want to be sure of the steps...

*Do not install CWM (Correct?)
1. Install 4.3.0 by copying the update.zip to root, boot to recovery and it should install...

2. Install the 4.3.2 Supplement. Same as above basically.

3. Install the Clemsyn kernel to fix the sleep issue. From what I read I just rename this zip to update.zip and install like the other two?

I know this is really stripped down, still a lot of reading to do, but I can't find a "This is how to install everything you need" type post...

If yours is like mine it may actually be a day later. Fedex is using your original billing date to calculate the estimated arrival, once it hits a hub it'll adjust to the real date. I'm 3 days for Ground and it's showing me as Wednesday which is a 2 day delivery.

I believe his is for both (not not 100% sure - you might want to shoot him a PM). I know for a fact that Froyo is the main target.

Most of the Gingerbread mods have custom kernels in them already, I believe - that's because there's no "stock" Gingerbread.

yep, update.zip again. Most of the mods probably recommend clockworkmod, but you'd need to look at each dev's post. For my stuff, I list what I support the recommended instructions on how to install.

dlevasseur wrote:Yup, been through that. But in an earlier Woot post, Roebeet specifically says NOT to install CWM. Also that post doesn't handle installing custom Kernels.

A few things -- just want to clear up.

- Don't install ROM Manager. That's the one you should avoid. That installs a version of clockworkmod that does NOT work well on the gTAB and can cause a soft-brick.

- I don't recommend clockworkmod for flashing firmware, unless of course the dev requires it. For example, in my gADAM mod the user has not choice but to use it, as they HAVE to wipe data after the install. On my TNT Lite ROM, that's not as much of an issue.

The reason why I'm wary of clockworkmod for flashing is because it doesn't flash the bootloader. It's not normally an issue but it could be in the future (and already is a problem with Notion Ink Adam users - lots of soft bricks over there thanks to cwm).

What I personally do is use clockworkmod for all my nandroid backup needs so it's usually installed for my day-to-day stuff. But when I flash firmware, I flip back to standard recovery. In my mods, I have two scripts that the user can use to flip between them pretty easily.

But again, keep in mind that all devs have their own requirements. If a dev requires clockworkmod for a mod, then you should follow their instructions, not mine.

Thank you to everyone who has helped post all of the tech info. I do have one question- if I install any apps on either platform of the gTab, if I switch say from Vegan to TNT (or the like) do I lose the apps?

I have a huge learning curve on Android OS, but I am Mac/Windows, etc user so I hope this is just another platform to increase my fun. I can't wait.
