Does anyone know the dimensions of the Gtab compared to an iPad? I get mine tomorrow, but I've been looking for some nice book cover type cases and there is not much of a choice. If the Gtab has similar dimensions to the iPad then I'm thinking I can use some pretty iPad accessories.

Ok, so who got a completely new sealed / wrapped unit.

Also, the folks who got repackaged units ... can you please report back with the firmware version? I am wondering if there is a difference.

Mine was 3588 and in my opinion showed no signs of use even though it had Angry Birds on it and booted into classic mode.

No accounts were on it and everything was bundled as I would expect it to be new. Works great.

@wootstaff, most of us understand the normal shipping model you have and are just fine with it. And to get 10,000+ boxes out the door in 3 days is pretty amazing to me.

@roebeet, I got the tablet, and messed around with it a bit before it wanted to do the OTA update. Once it applied the update, all the what looked like unique stuff like the kindle store and angry birds weren't there and the active background didn't work. Then whenever I tried to start any remaining program a black box flashed up and disappeared. I couldn't read the whole thing but I could see process and force close, even after a couple restarts.

Luckily I was able to get it to flash to your TNT LITE and get it working, but I wouldn't mind going back to what came from it from Woot for a little while to see what that was like.

Is this something that's been covered on XDA before and my search-fu is weak, or did I miss something? I know I have a tendency to bork electronics, but I'm at a loss as to what I did this time. Thanks in advance.

Mine should be arriving today and I'm wondering about charging before use. I've seen people say they just plugged it in and started it up and others saying they are fully charging before turning it on. Is there a preferred method? I'm hoping I don't have to fully charge first as I am anxious to start playing with it when I get home from work!

They use image based captcha, you need to solve a simple picture puzzle to sign up. Do you have noscript or something installed ? You can see samples of the puzzle here.

I plugged mine into the wall and after it hit 10% or so, I was able to start working on it while keeping it plugged in.

I used the firmware/instructions from Blendblog, and everything went 100% smoothly, but now I have some issues with it occasionally locking up (esp wrt video files) and files spontaneously disappearing from sdcard2. (also video files.)

Gonna hit XDA as soon as I get a breather.

Just wanted to write a quick note about my impressions of the GTablet. Nothing about software, just the device itself.

It's a fingerprint MAGNET. I'm hoping a screen protector will go some good. From the images I have seen online I thought the back was textured, nope... It is flat fingerprint magnet black. And yes the logo is ugly.

The power plug and headphones jack are in the absolute worst position. Holding it landscape, rightside up, both are exactly where your left hand would sit. Annoying but liveable.

Speakers actually sound good for a device this small. Pretty LOUD.

Dimensions 10.5" x 6.81" x .64"
Weight 1.76 pounds according to our UPS scale. It's heavy. Specs list it at 1.55 pounds, lighter than the iPad. Either way, I don't see using this thing one handed. Might have to exercise some more.

The cover for the USB and memory card port is bound to break off eventually. Pretty much expect that to happen.

The screen... Ahh the point of contention amongst many of the people on SlickDeals... Not great. Better when upside down, but then all the buttons are in the wrong spots and the android buttons are perfect for your left hand to cover up and accidentally hit. Unusable, not at all. Worthless on a flat surface looking at it from an angle (unless upside down). Enough for me to kick it out of bed, HELL NO. Gets better if you jack up the brightness, but not worth the loss of battery IMO.

The build seems solid. Nothing creaks, all the edges line up perfectly, no flex to the unit.

Just my thoughts on the unit itself.

Yes, it's the same way. And you only need the latest supplement -- for example, I'm probably going to have a 4.3.3 today to "unfix" the Camera.

I would charge it for about an hour first (if you can wait). It depends on how low the original battery was - if it's 0% to start for example, give it some time. If it were 50% or more, then I wouldn't be as concerned.

This is an excellent point - they've customized the device outside of Viewsonic's stock ROM, somehow. Apps like Kindle and Flash are NOT in the stock ROM, and after you do a factory reset, they are gone.

I honestly don't know if there's a "Woot stock ROM" to go back to a Woot-baseline, as I don't have one of these. We won't know how their distributor customized this. Ideally, you'd have a user apks on your sdcard to sideload, but no idea.

Anyone in staff want to chime in? If a Woot user does a factory reset and loses Flash, what's the "best" way to get it back? Is there a process that distributor has created?

Btw, if there's not, ROMs like TNT Lite and VEGAn have Flash pre-installed, and the Google Market does the rest.

[edit] just got an email back from them, saying that they are working on securing investment capital and are going to use it to develop for other tabs.

I got mine last night and played with it quite a bit as I was charging it. (Remember, this is a 10-hour battery, so you're going to be charging it for some time!) I actually like both the stock "classic" Android interface (which mostly matches my G2 phone) and the Dashboard quite a bit. But the browser force closes quite often (including loading the Woot forum pages) and I do want the stock Android Market; going to market.android.com showed me some of what I'd downloaded on my G2 but not everything, and I do want a lot of the same software to be on both.

You folks who have installed the modded ROMs -- is there any consensus on which provides an interface closest to the "classic" version on the stock unit? Thanks!

(Also: Any Slingplayer users here? I bought the version for my phone... do I have to buy it again for the tablet?)

quality posts: 0 Private Messages luvduchovny

I received mine in the mail yesterday. I charged it up and booted it up to have lots of things force quit, that was until I let it install the 3588 firmware update. Now it all works, I will no doubt root it soon so I can get market but in the meantime going to the freewarelovers.com website allowed me to download most of the programs I wanted on here like the current Adobe flash 10.2, Lookout Security and yes dammit Angry Birds Seasons! I tried using their "G-Market" and I didn't much care for it. The sooner I root it and get regular Android Market working the better.

It's also funny on some websites it insisted I needed the ipad plug-in to work, including the secure wireless we have here at work. I know it was Apple's motto in the past, but what about ye olde "Think Different"?

I'm too lazy for signatures... oh, okay not completely lazy.

There is an "Enhancement Pack" in XDA, with various iterations. But I think it's stale. One XDA user tried to do a recent update, and it's a good beta version but has a few bugs in it.

roebeet wrote:That's actually a good idea. When I got mine months ago, we suggested two things:

1) Charge it fully
2) Do a data wipe ("factory reset")

I still think these are valid first steps. However, if you have Flash and the Kindle apps pre-installed, a data wipe WILL delete them. There are ways to add them back, but still be aware of this.

When you start reading up on mods, a data wipe is almost always suggested as a first troubleshooting step for any problem. If you root it, I would highly recommend "Titanium Backup" as it will backup important user data (cough cough Angry Birds) so you can restore that data after a data wipe.

So mine is out for delivery. Just so I am clear, we should do this before rooting and applying a new ROM.
1. Charge
2. Do a Factory Reset
3. Install nvflash
4. install Titanium Backup
5. Let the OTA update install

Does that sound like good first steps? Or should I do the Factory reset after steps 3 and 4?

Sorry, this thread is getting so long it's hard to keep track of all the steps everyone has been doing.
And thank you roebeet, you have been extremely helpful.

Give it at LEAST an hour, then. It's a best practice.

Your device might also be a bit "wonky" - this is normal when the deivce is completely drained. I would recommend a data wipe / factory reset if you get a lot of FC's (force closes) or only weird issue.

But keep in mind a factory reset will wipe all the extra user apps, including Flash.

#3 is optional. more of a "learn how to use nvflash" and #4 won't work unless you root it.

I would do this:

- Charge it (at least an hour, especially if the battery is drained)
- Do a factory reset only if it's all wonky. Problem is that a FR will wipe out all the extra apps (see above)
- OTA update, if you are 3389 build.
- Read up on adb and nvflash (it's really worth it, if you plan to mod the device)
- Start playing with mods!

It's got some good how-to videos for installing CWM and flashing roms, so you can follow along visually when you're reading the how-to's on XDA.

Also, iPads and G-tabs have very different dimensions. Don't go buying an iPad case and expecting it to fit. The Gtablet is an inch wider and half an inch shorter (when held in landscape) than the iPad.

The ViewSonic® ViewPad® 10 10.1" Wi-Fi, Bluetooth® dual OS tablet supports both Windows® and Android® operating systems.

http://www.viewsonic.com/products/vpad10.htm

I watched a video of this dual booting from 7 to android... which was in fact androidx86. This is essentially a homebrew OS which can be downloaded and installed on just about any machine, but it's buggy and largely unusable.

I have had both 1.6 and 2.2 running for months on the first asus eeepc (a version is designed just for it). Since the apps are compiled for ARM processors and this is an x86 proccessor virtually none work. If this tablet is still running androidx86 don't expect anything resembling a true android experience.

I'm hoping intel(or anyone) pushes out a usable x86 build of android in the near future although I don't really know how that'd be possible unless apps were compiled on the system itself, or came in x86 flavors as well. Both seem unlikely.

The more likely dual boot solution, which some are already implementing - is to have an ARM processor built into the main screen area, and a separate Atom in some sort mobile dock/laptop body, which will run windows. It seems terribly wasteful, but it illustrates the near impossibility of running multiple architectures on the same chip. That said windows 8 will support ARM processors - meaning dual boot android devices may become quite common.

Forgive the rant, the point is for now don't buy anything that dual boots windows and android.

I have a shuttle X50V2 touch screen all in one computer I'd LOVE to put android on. Although I managed to make ubuntu 10.04 extremely usable on it.

Imagine a 15.6 inch android tablet with 4 usb ports, 2 hyper-threaded atom cores, 4 gigs of ram, and 750 gig hd....... I think i'd cry.

FYI, I'm testing out a TNT Lite 4.4.0, today. It's going to have a customized kernel to fix the sleep issue. I usually don't do this, but I'm making an exception.

My thinking is that I want 4.4.0 to be as Woot/hitchhiker friendly as possible - I don't like having that sleep issue hanging over my head. So you might see it uploaded later today.
