Thx! I scanned it and it's definitely stock 3389, no differences that I can see. I heard that there's a "MASTER" folder, and I believe that's where all the customization must have been added.

I do have some generic icons on a few apps -- ES File Explorer, Facebook, Weather, News, Photos. I'll see if deleting those shortcuts and creating new ones fixes that.

In regards to the app icons with nothing connected to them after the TNT Lite 4.x install - it's the lack of a user data wipe. Those apps are actually gone (I delete them in TNT Lite, most are just URL links) but since the user data was never wiped the icons remain.

What's weird is that I don't think I've seen that before - must be something with this Woot! image.

All in all I am pretty happy. I'm not blown away with the gtab, and part of me wishes I had just bought the xoom, but I keep telling myself this was only $285 (of course I bought the ST warranty and a sleeve, so now I'm closer to $340).

I can't say I have buyers remorse, but if woot had a deal on the xoom and it was @ $400 ish than I might feel differently.

Soon. Xoom sales are reportedly not going well, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them on sale here within a few months since tablets are 'in' right now.

Anyhow, I'm pleased to report mine is brand new. Entire box was shrink wrapped, no finger print smudges on the screen, no scratches on the unit, and the power cable was neatly bundled with tie wraps (not rubber bands). Haven't turned it on to check the firmware version yet, charging it up now. Battery was DOA

Same for me. Mine is shiney and new. I could tell the minute I opened it up that it wasn't used. Haven't charged it up or checked firmware yet, but have everything ready when i have the time to start. I am very impressed with Woot's delivery plan for these things. I didn't expect to receive mine until next week. It shipped Monday and arrived Wednesday. Not bad for $5 shipping.

I ordered at 11:55 PM central time and my tablet arrived Tuesday, 3/29, with FedEx tracking info beginning on 3/28 @ 2:12 PM ("Shipment information sent to FedEx").

As far as I could tell it was in mint condition: sealed box, sealed charger in two pieces, sealed USB cable, white sleeve around tablet, no fingerprints, no scratches.

I charged until the red light turned green, and then disconnected and powered it up. I immediately saw WiFi was disconnected (yellow triangle with exclamation) and decided I'd do the initial perusal without a connection. What struck me as odd and still has me confused is that I saw VERY current world news (March 26th, specifically) on the home screen (Dashboard Home). There were several stories from this past Friday & Saturday, including the headline about Geraldine Ferraro. Note that I hadn't yet turned on WiFi.

Can anyone help me understand how that could happen? There is no possibility it was connected to a network as wireless was turned off. I had to specifically turn it on and add my network later.

A couple other points:
1) I got the Angry Birds black screen initially, but after the auto-update to 3588, and a few reboots, I see that it now runs.
2) I checked browser history and I see only 4 entries from 3/27 in the morning -- nothing else.

I'd love to hear some explanations for how I got news from 3/26 when my tablet shipped on 3/28 and arrived on 3/29.

Check the site below for cases specifically for the GTablet. I have the M1 and it fits like a glove and is just what I wanted. Has a feature that props the Gtab up in landscape mode on a flat surface for viewing, like a stand. Wonderful and Steve at electroniccrap is great to work with. apbarry wrote:Could someone kindly explain why the term is to "flash" a rom? Apologies if someone already did -- I can't find it in my 37(!) pages of clippings from this thread and XDA and Sean's blog and ... and ...

By now, I have a pretty good idea of what a rom is (as opposed to the old ROM), and I know where to find the rom(s) and where to find what to do with it/them, but I seem to be lacking something in the concept department.

It's not synonymous with "to install", iiuc, but why not just say "put a new rom in", or " -- on"?

(Needless to say, my gTab hasn't arrived yet, or I'd be finding more fun things to think about.)

It sort of is synonymous to install, but we the computer geeks like to use the terminology that settled over years. The type of memory in which the rom is kept is called "flash memory". It is mostly the same type of memory you will find on flash drives, SD cards and so on. So what's the big deal?

I'd have to go through a bit of history here:
You will be surprised how long ago the flash memory was invented... But first about ROM. ROM stands for Read Only Memory. Long time ago the basic operation of all computers was pre-programmed on a BIOS (Basic Input-Output System) chip. That included a basic boot loader that allowed to access a floppy drive (or punch card reader) and load an operating system or a program. In many cases that was all it had. Some later computers had some more advanced BIOSes including BASIC interpreter, etc. These chips were permanently programmed and could not be re-programmed at all.

Later came the flash memory. Around 1980ies or so. Those chips could be reprogrammed. But not necessarily through computer. First ones had to be either removed from a board and inserted into a special device, or had an extra port on top to connect a programming device. The way those chips worked - you could only overwrite the entire content of the chip at once. Not change anything. Just fully erase and put in new data. That process was called flashing of a chip.

Everything else evolved from there over time. Now we have flash memory everywhere, and we really don't FLASH it in a sense, that we use a special process to erase the whole chip and re-program it in one shot. But when we talk about the part of the operating system that does not change (read only) during the operation - we still call it ROM, even if the read only limitation is now imposed by software, not hardware. And replacing the ROM is still called flashing, even if we don't have to use any special hardware for it or do it as a single operation. It is kind of the same still - when flashing the rom, we usually erase and format the memory segment that it occupies (which sometimes is simply a partition or logical part of actual physical memory chip) and put in the new stuff on it (which will remain there untouched and unmodified until the next flash)... So the term does have some validity still...

But that's a very short and approximate (ahem... well, as short as I could write it) explanation of where it comes from.

These legacy terms often far outlive their actual meanings... We still often refer to ships as going at full steam, even if they use gas turbines. We tell somebody to hold their horses even if no such animals are visible within miles and miles. And we still flash our roms instead of installing an operating system....

OK. Going to embarrass myself here and admit that I play Happy Aquarium on Facebook. I bought the Gtab for many reasons, one of which is to play that silly game while winding down at night in my comfy chair. I have not tried to root or flash it because the thought of it scares me. I did manage to get my wifi on it and download the ota update. I went to the Amazon link and got Angry Birds Rio, Flash, and PDF installed. My Gtab says I have Flash and Java enabled, but I cannot get Happy Aquarium to load. I’ll click on a link from FB and it will immediately take me back to my home screen.
Will rooting fix this or am I destined to keep dragging my oversized laptop around?

Thanks!

It was powering down on me instead of sleeping when at 30-35 percent so I had to plug it in. No options to configure this.

wow, what the hell?

I got my tablet today. Took it out of the box, looked new just like everyone else described. I plugged it in until the light turned green.

First time I turned it on I didn't get the config screen (4 step config). So my time/date wasn't set up.

I was using it just a little. Was on the wifi playing YouTube videos. I realized the time was off on it and set that up via the settings page or whatever. I was having issues with it force closing on the settings page when making changes.

I then lauched the stock dashboard thing, that has the weather, clock and small launch buttons at the bottom. I noticed the weather was set for some other location, so I tried to change it. The program force closed when trying to change the location.

I tried rebooting the tablet, but now I finally get the 4 step config screen at the beginning of boot up.

I can accept the disclaimer, and then on the next page (time/date) when I click next the app FORCE CLOSES every time. Then loops back to the beginning of the config screens.

Not sure what to do, I don't see any way to get into the main screen for the tablet to do anything else. I guess I may have to warranty this thing since it's crapping out.

I guess I just got a bum unit, doesn't seem like others are having issues like this with theirs. Is there a way to force my way out of the Jatravartid config screens that keep force closing/erroring out?

Error is:
The application Tablet Setup (process com.tapntap.welcome) has stopped unexpectantly. Please try again

How about this for a possible indicator of the power of Woot. Could be coincidence, but I think it hast to be a factor.

This thing has been on the market a while, and then the week that Woot posts a never-before-seen price on it, bam.. 500% increase in the number of searches about it. Nice.

I'm not sure how FedEx does it, but UPS will leave it unless the shipper requests a signature, or it's being delivered to a high crime area. Woots is not requiring a signature for this tablet and mine was left on the front steps.

I tried doing the hard reset button press trick.

Hold down power button and volume up to boot up. Still Force Closes when trying to config on opening screens.

Obviously I could try to boot/load a custom ROM or whatever, but I'm thinking I should warranty it first.

Any other tricks or thoughts on fixing this? This post is in addition to mine two posts up...

You're not going to have any luck playing full flash games. Facebook Flash games like Happy Aquarium, FarmVille, etc.. take up a long of processing power. I don't know of any Flash capable tablets that can do that.

I tried installling it from the android market and it just fails. I even paid for it from the amazon market, and it fails to install. We, the Hitchhikers....

Way to go FedEx!!

After sending my tablets about 300 miles out of their way, leaving them in Atlanta for about 23 hours, they finally arrived in my local station (Crestview, FL) at 5:17AM today. Now, they have to make it onto the truck, and drive the hour and a half to get here.

Maybe by 5 PM - if they get on the truck.

FedEx used to have the best service available. Now they have caught up to UPS in their mediocrity.

I got this email from Woot yesterday,

"We saw your post on the forums and wanted to offer to send you a replacement for the unit you got in that appears to be used. We’re also happy to bring back your order for a full refund, so however you’d like to deal with it, we’re willing to work with you.

I decided not to bother sending it back and wait for exchange cause the 3 scratches on the back was the only physical damage. Everything else works fine. Mine also have web history logs in it already so it's clearly used. Like someone on this forum said, This is Woot's responsibility, but it's not their fault, and they did take responsibility. I guess it's just my bad luck that I got a used one.

I got this almost exact same error right after I updated mine and it restarted.

I held down the power button and shut it off and when I turned it back on didn't seem to have that issue anymore.

It's kind of weird I am hearing a lot of issues that are simply resolved by turning the device all the way off and then back on again.

I've also read that Viewsonic is getting ready to release a new OTA update for it, so i'm going to see if that's any good before I head over to XDA, but i'm certainly eager to tinker with it.

Battery life is good. I put it through its paces yesterday for nearly 8 hours with wifi on. My battery was around 45% when I went to bed.

Also I want to thank you for all the help yesterday. I was really worried that I'd have to return it after finding it stuck in a boot loop when I first powered it on after charging. Long story short, I was finally able to install tnt lite 4.4 and it is running like a champ. Many thanks to you for your assistance.

Mine came new, it was in some kind of weird paper/cloth bag type thing. There where absolutely no finger prints on it. Also, This may help people determine if theirs is new; The charger cord was tucked in one compartment of the box, while the wall wart was in the other compartment. It didn't have an elastic band around it.

Turned it on, connected to wifi, downloaded the OTA update. Then Tried CM7B1 with Gapps. I couldn't get the Gapps to work at all.

I ended up flashing CM6.1B4 with Gapps. Seems to be working fine for the most part. I do have some issues though;

-I can't get the sound to work without plugging in headphones then removing them. I tried installing some sort of patch, it was an .apk. That did not work.

-Youtube in HD doesn't run very smoothly.

-Sometimes the home button isn't responsive. This is only true while in the OS. When I am in clockwork it works perfectly.

-The camera image is sideways when I open the camera app

-The battery indicator seems to be stuck at 100%. I doubt after 3 hours of use yesterday It really is still 100%. I am on my first charge, maybe that has something to do with it...

-Wallpapers don't look good at all. When selecting a wallpaper (from gallery) and cropping, the cropping window is square. I assume that its cutting it at the wrong aspect ratio then stretching it.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix to these issues? Thank you!

Here are some notes about the hardware:

-The screen viewing angles suck, no doubt about it. This has been discussed to death though.

-Also mentioned before, the soft buttons are impossible to see at night. This kind of stinks because I use them often in android, Everyone probably does. I'm tempted to take a permanent marker and make ever so small tic marks on the screen so I can line up my finger in the dark.

-The battery indicator is stuck at 100%. I mentioned this in the software notes, but I figured I would mention it here too. I didn't see it drop below 100% when I had TnT installed either. This may be because I am on the first charge, idk.

Thanks for reading, let me know if you have any ideas

Ok so I got my tablet and everything went smoothly with installing the vegan rom (I did have to apply the market fix 3 times to get launcher pro, was getting worried for a sec). This tablet is awesome. Big thanks to the devs over at xda, and to sean for his step by step guide. One issue I do have. I partitioned the internal space for 2gb as instructed. On the settings screen the other 12-13 gb shows up as if it was an sd card. Now when I put my own sd card in, it doesn't show up. I do get an error that states that my card may be bad (i know it isn't) and a popup that asks me to format, but that doesn't do anything. Any suggestions?

Edit: Ok so I formatted my sd card using my droid x, and now when I put the sd card in the tablet there are no errors. But when I go to settings and sd card, it only shows internal and internal sd. I did find my card by using a file explorer app. It lists it as sd card2. I guess I will just have to get used to it not showing under the normal settings?

Maybe semantics, but just to be a little more technically accurate, the BIOS was programmed into a ROM chip (several physical chips if we talk about the IBM-PC).

Actually, some of the later IBM-PC compatible computers came with EEPROM (mostly Asian made ones, particularly Korean). The EEPROM was an Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory. You could erase and reprogram those using UV light that was shone down on a clear window on top of the chip housing. The EEPROM was the real precursor to the flash chips of today.

This surprises me. The hardware in the gtablet should be equal to the task. I know plenty of folk who play those games on much less powerful hardware than what the gtablet has under the hood. It leads me to think that this is probably a software/hardware utilization issue rather than being a hard and fast limit to the ability of tablets.

I also had the same errors. After I held down on the power button and shut it off and turned on it then went through a complete restart. I lost all the preinstalled appications when it did this and the very nice background screen. I reinstalled Angry Birds and a couple other applications but cannot figure where to go for the water background it had initialy. All I have now is a plain blue background .
Edit--- Little did I know that I needed press my finger a lot longer than I thought I would need to on the screen to bring up the screen manager. All is well now . This is going to the wife so it stays stock.

Schitty wrote:OK.

Thanks!

(And hats of to Roebeet and others. If I do have to tinker with this thing, I’m sure you can step this approaching-middle-aged-little-league-mom through the process).

Flash / java online game? Might be iffy - probably built for a different architechture. I usually assume that these types of games might fail to run. Apologies, when it comes to app testing I fail miserably outside of the ones I use (like the dreaded Angry Birds).

[force close]

Sounds like more than a few of you are getting this problem - I've tried to keep up here.

I don't think you have a dud - I think the image is just messed up. Suggest an update to 3588 via OTA, and then a user data wipe. You probably lost all the user apps, but i heard that the apks live in a folder called "MASTER" so you might be able to reinstall them.

Shorewood wrote:I tried doing the hard reset button press trick.

You need a user data wipe - a few users here have had the same issue. I actually called Viewsonic CS yesterday just to cofirm their current procedures, and they havent changed (let the battery drain and re-try).

An easier solution is to install clockworkmod and then wipe the user data that way. It will at least get you up and running, but OTA updates may not work anymore so keep that in mind. Still, you can install a modded ROM if you want.

I wish Woot! had a FAQ area - I could start writing up docs in there! Just read the posts on XDA on how to install cwm via the microSD card.

Yes i think wetting our pants is pretty much standard as of today. I work a few blocks away from home and left a note with my number. As soon as they (hopefully) call i'm dashing over quick on an early lunch break ;)

patricksommer wrote:I'm having one small problem....angry birds won't install.

I tried installling it from the android market and it just fails. I even paid for it from the amazon market, and it fails to install. We, the Hitchhikers....

No big deal, I got the free version of Rio and Seasons, but it just annoys me that it won't install, even when I bought a new copy from amazon.

AB (original) wants to install to the SD Card, try this:

- Mount the device to your PC
- Re-try the install

This might force it to /data. This was an old issue as well - a newer build might fix it, if memory serves.

Update the stock to 3588, if you haven't already done so. Also, it could be your router, try no authentication (as a test) or a different channel. also, a modded ROM with a custom kernel will use a different Wifi driver, which may help.

magicwuff wrote:Mine came new, it was in some kind of weird paper/cloth bag type thing.

I ended up flashing CM6.1B4 with Gapps. Seems to be working fine for the most part. I do have some issues though;

Some of these issue (like the Camera) might be specific to the mod, so keep that in mind. CM6.1B4 is a few months old, if memory serves.

The battery issue is a known issue - I have the same problem. It's actually not stuck - what's happing is that the battery stats are broken. Some devices might go up to 95% and stop, others go to 110% (which you can't see) and stop. I'm in the latter category.

Read up on XDA but a suggested course of action is to install cwm, let the battery drain completely and then run cwm and reset the battery stats. This has worked for some people.

tothenet1 wrote:Ok so I got my tablet and everything went smoothly with installing the vegan rom (I did have to apply the market fix 3 times to get launcher pro, was getting worried for a sec).

Yes, unfortunately. "The microSD not being seen by apps" issue is well known, and not just on the GTAB. The problem is mainly that a lot of apps are written for phones, where /sdcard is the microSD. As more apps are re-written, this should be less of a problem.
