I have a netbook that picks up the signal at least twice as far away as does the gtab. Will rooting and flashing a new ROM have any effect on the wireless range?

I have had 3 GTablets and one of the 3 had a really bad wifi problem. The other 2 were better but not as good as my Archos 101 or Xoom. I even posted this as part of my Archos 101 vs GTablet review on my blog.

If you put the GTablet right near your router and aren't getting 100% signal strength then you may have a bad unit like I did. The highest it would go is 76% even right on top of my wifi router. The bad unit got worse until eventually wifi wouldn't work at all. You may wish to consider an exchange now while you can. If you are getting 100% near the router than the hardware is probably performing as expected, it just doesn't have the greatest wifi implementation apparently.

Hope this helps

I have no problems with wifi, I assume got a good unit. Flashed with Vegan 5.11 and I stay conencted to wifi while walking around my yard. House is 2200 sq ft and the yard is a bit over .25 acre. Its about as strong as my Dell laptop which has same distance. As long as I can use it around the house and on the deck I am happy.

On a side note, the thing flies with Vegan and I am happy with it as my first Android device. I am extremely disappointed with the screen however. It really is terrible. But this will hold me over for 6 months and I will pass this on to my parents or one of my nephews.

It is sad, that this tablet does not charge via usb, so the question of he day is - does anyone know of a decent cheap charger that would work with this guy? I can get a $15 universal charger at Amazon, it will probably have a proper tip and voltage selection. But sometimes there's a really cheap carger for a different gadget that just fits.

Anyone found one?

Just FYI, USB charger (the AC type) output 5V @ 1A (total 5 Watts). The GTab charger outputs 12V @ 2A (total 24W). It would take 5x longer to charge via USB...if it was allowed.

That's what I have been trying to find out. It made no sense to me that something we could write could be irreversible. Anyway, it seems we CAN revert to what was there originaly, using nvflash.

I can't say exactly what happens, but I can attest to the fact that I DID have CWM and now I don't. When I had CWM, I installed TnTLite, gADAM and VEGAn - each with a variety of different apps. After I used nvflash, I seem to have the original setup that came with the gTab. It auto-updated from 3389 to 3588. It has the 2.6.32.9-00000-10.8.2 kernal, build FRF91. It seems to have all the original apps.

Knowing we can start over is a HUGE relief to me and really takes away any fear I had of experimenting!

Firefox won't recognize I have Flesh installed and the dafault browser doesn't have an user agent setting as far as I can tell. This is keeping me from trying to watch hulu. Any suggestions out there?

Also where can I find Dolphin HD?

Still haven't received mine in Seattle. Was saying the 6th when it finally registered as picked up on fedex tracking. Today it changed to the 8th.

Yell at me for complaining if you'd like but I wont order from Woot again. This was my first and last time. 2 1/2 weeks from TX to Seattle is a bit much.

Edit: Honestly I don't even want this thing anymore after the info dropped on the upcoming ASUS tablet.

I wanted to come back and thank roebeet for all of the hard work.

I originally tried CM7, couldn't get gapps to work. Switched to CM6, it worked but had a lot of quirks; the wake lag, camera image was sideways, laggy video.

I didn't realize that you created vegan, I tried that a few nites ago and I am amazed!

No wake lag, videos play 100x better, just amazing.

I also like the home and back buttons on the task bar. It really helps navigating at night!

Thank you!

The bootloader, if you Flesh (or don't Flesh it) can be corrected with nvflash, that's correct.

The caveat with cwm is that it does NOT update the bootloader. Normally this is not an issue, but if Viewsonic requires it in a future firmware, then it could be an issue. This is why I have told users just to be wary if their OTA updater gives you something newer than 3588 - we need to test that it works ok with our mods.

3991 (an unreleased UAT) did have issues because of clockworkmod, so we'll have to see what happens when a new released firmware comes out.

VEGAn was actually a group effort between devs gojimi, rothnic and myself. Those two did most of the dev work, wheras I worked on the packaging. By beta 5.1, it was mostly in gojimi's hands. I actually created the 5.1.1 supplement in February to get the VEGAn users some recent updates. Since then I've stepped back on it as I wanted to concentrate on the TNT Lite and gADAM mods.

VEGAn is still pretty unstoppable, though - probably the most popular mod for the GTAB, to this day!

I can't speak for FF, but there's huku-hacked 10.2 Flesh floating around XDA - I heard it just tweaks Flesh so that Hulu thinks you are on a Windows system.

DolphinHD is in the Market -- try it with the Market hack if it's missing in your Market search.

Just another followup. My skinomi screen protector came in, and I couldn't have been happier with the feel (and proper manufacture size, which a few people have had problems with.)

What I did have problems with was the installation. The sheer size of the protector is daunting to say the least, and I've done quite a few phone protectors wet & dry.

My big problem came with removing the skinomi from the backing & getting it to the phone without touching the back. No instructions are provided on this step, and neither are there any tabs/"edge guides" to allow you to start the peel without touching the back.

In short, I failed at it. No bubbles, that wasn't the issue, and no wetness rainbows either. I did get, however, several back hazy spots & fingerprinty spots on the back. (Yes, after waiting for it to dry & cure over the weekend).

I then tried removing & cleaning the protector as described on a google result, but to no avail either; the original spots did improve after rinse with distilled water, but I got many more in removing the skin & got dust/lint in the adhesive in the process. SO the second application was freeer of prints (and may have cured properly in that regard) but had many micro-bumps (not bubbles, they wouldn't move) from dust.

Not sure where to go from here. I don't want to spend another $15 (total $30) on a second skinomi, but I can see that if applied properly, I would almost certainly be happy with it. The lifetime replacement policy doesn't cover installation, either.

Any suggestions on salvaging the skin and/or getting skinomi to make an exception (if they do that)?

You'll probably need clockworkmod for VEGAn (remember, it's a completely different framework than stock). cwm will wipe your user data for you, no problem.

I know that I discourage it, but again you have to go with the dev's suggestion. For VEGAn, clockworkmod is probably a requirement.

On xda, lsira found a way to access google market by editing a file (/system/build.prop --- ro.product.device)to change value to "olympus". If this change is made, can apps be downloaded to gtab from google market and then original /system/build.prop file be used? This way there are no possible impacts from changing the file. Or, do the apps check the system before running.

Roebeet,

Like others, I am thankful for your amazing work. I installed TNT Lite 4.3 after I got my tablet from Woot and today I upgraded to 4.4 and the sleep issue is gone. It even seems a bit faster, is that just my imagination (4.4 vs 4.3)?

On a different note, had a couple of question and if you find time to answer those, I do appreciate it.

1) There is no VPN related stuff in settings; is that something that can be added? I was under the impression that the Clemsyn's kernel had those but I might be wrong.

2) Given that we are basically running a 2.2 Android on this, how much of a dual core processor is being really utilized by this version of Android?

3) Do you have any plans to upgrade your TNT Lite ROMs to Gingerbread?

Many thanks again,
Ali.

Got mine last week, been playing with the stock OS.

I nearly panicked when I mistakenly clicked on the bottom icon on the right-hand side and went to the dreaded "dashboard" view. After a bunch of googling, found out how to get back by clicking on the "Classic Home" icon while in the "Dashboard Home".

Tried a bunch of apps from Handango.

Here is a list of apps I downloaded.

RockPlayer - hands down the best video player for this device. It's best with AVI, RMVB, and WMA, not so with MKV, and no Flesh support. System mode work inconsistently, Normal mode always works. Quite choppy above 720P.

Aldiko Reader - pretty good ePub and PDF reader, the best from Handango since FBReader or Moon+ Reader is no available.

Adobe PDF Reader - pretty good and basic

Laputa Reader - paid for this actually, but can't seem to read from local drive, links to online book sites, only half of them working

Adobe Photoshop Express - pretty nifty photo manipulation app, surprised it's free.

IMDB - good design and navigation

AVG AntiVirus - seems to do its job

Technorati - good tech site, easy navigation

.PodKast - good directory of podcasts, however, the Favorite function doesn't work, all channels show up in Favorite.

Yelp - helpful and simple interface

Slugs - fun but get bored easily

Opera Mobile - seems to be faster than stock Web app.

Brain Genius Deluxe - loud music but fun, couldn't get the crate rotate one to work

Toss It Demo - didn't work, messes up the screen.

Would also love to hear what your stock OS apps feedback.

Seems like the only choice since electroniccrap is out of stock and no one else makes this kind of case. Thoughts?

I have the M1 (from electroniccrap.com) which is this case and it rocks!! You will love it. $20 is a better price than on electroniccrap.com. The case is quality made and is the exact same one on electroniccrap.com. It's no bigger than a 8.5x11 portfolio and slips in my shoulder bag with ease. Use the prop both in my lap and on a desk and gives great viewing angle. Reading articles during lunch using the prop works great on a dinner table. Case looks professional and when i whip it out and put it on the conference table, open up, prop, and power up to Vegan 5.1 I get oohs and ahhs! Ipad2, get a life!! $280 versus $699 (64gb). Come on!!

BTW, Steve at electroniccrap.com is great to work with. I also got the JunLi screen protector from Steve and it works great. Gotta be patient when installing. Need some scotch tape to remove the trapped lint particles that cause the bubbles, but with patience, I got a perfect installation and you can't even tell it's got a screen protector on it. I keep a microfiber cloth handy (walmart automotive section. 5 for $7. Cut in half to make 10. washable, work fantastic on all my devices with lcd screens)in my bag. Wipe the screen when done and close the lid. Then, ready for the next use with crystal clear screen.

It's probably a tad faster with the custom kernel, that's my guess. Also, our understanding is that the dual-core is probably not being used optimally - not just with the OS, but the apps as well (they might not be written to take advantage of dual core).

What that all means is that this device might get faster, as time goes one. It's not optimized yet.

No plans for Gingerbread at all, there are other ROMs dealing with that. Most of my stuff are just hacks of existing ROMs to make them a little "better".

It's not a requirement, but a few Woot users needed to do it. It's in clockworkmod and it will wipe everything in /sdcard and /data.

I've had to do this twice in ~4 months of use, on my own device. It seems that there's corruption on the partitioning on occasion - you might see FC's for example, that a data wipe doesn't fix. Or just file corruption, in general.

Btw, to all users -- there are reports that 3588 OTA updates are not working tonight (for reasons unknown).
