I just don't get it. It's a dual core CPU from the previous generation and a 50 dollar video card.

It does hyperthreading, so it has 4 logical cores.

I'll second...third...and fourth...this opinion, as I have THREE HP computers within arm's length of my Dell, the only one I still actually Use! All three are useless, having Windows 98, 2000, and XP in them. Probably doesn't help that HP is now made in Mexico. Of course, that isn't the worst of my sad computer history, as my first laptop was a 14" CTX...which ended up in the Trash!

It's a bummer too. I have a 10 year old HP that is still running strong. Things like that are good cause for brand loyalty, unfortunately, the company was run into the crapper.

Yes, but only when comparing two single-thread operations. More cores means more tasks can be run simultaneously at full clock speed. This one will drop to half speed (1.6GHz) with 4 full-load tasks running, while the 6-core will run all 4 tasks at full speed without flinching.

Honestly, the amd would probably stomp this even single threaded. Still, good point, hyper threading is always a terrible way to go

Since today's Wine.Woot! is Ty Caton, and that's an auto-buy for a lot of the regulars there, there's not much for him to add over there. So being bored, he dropped in over here.

He's also mastered the art of milking the Quality Post auto-filter by posting only three links per post.

I have an HP like this and it's CRAP there are serious problems with support even when you purchase there warrenty. It's the last time I buy an HP I fell for it twice once with the otigional purchase and again with the second. Shame on me when or IF they replace parts it's a refurb part of doubious integrety. If I could I would get my hard earned money back and look elswhere. I was on the phone for a few hours over seas, don't get me wrong I like India and it's people but there should be Americans fixing American probleb. Notice the keybord problems.

That's a strong statement. A dual core with hyperthreading may not be able to match a true quad core processor, but it will still offer a significant performance improvement over a dual core with HT turned off (except in very specific circumstances).

If you want to call it the "poor man's quad core," I couldn't argue.

That website looks really suspect to me for some reason... But thats just me.

You will notice however that woots is new, while this sites is clearly a refurb even though they chose to list its condition as "new" another thing that bothers me

True, toms hardware is also now excluding non hyper threaded dual cores from some of their lists because 3 threads are needed for decent gaming performance. I prefer to call it "the silly mans quad core" since I haven't seen a hyper threaded dual core that didn't have a comparable priced quad that could beat it. But thatd just me being a pain while I'm bored at work.

Maybe i'll play a game, now where did I leave that ICBM key....

If you're looking for computer like this and live near a Micro Center Store check out the Gateway
DX4831-07 Desktop Computer
for $674.99. I thought I was getting a great deal when I payed $869.99 for that machine last June. It has a better i5-750 processor, and contrary to the published (HD 5750) info it comes with an HD 5770 graphics card. It's better or equal to this HP in every respect and costs $125 less. It's a great deal if you happen to live near one of their stores. It can't be ordered online.

I've used over 7GB of RAM doing graphics processing and working with large compressed archives. Whether 4GB is enough depends on what applications are run.

Buy.Com had this Gateway computer on sale last week for $599.99 with shipping. I tried buying it Tuesday and it was sold out. The next day it was listed again for a short while and I ordered it. It's supposed to be here Tuesday. Seems like a better deal than this HP. I noticed that Buy.com has raised the price back to $797.

My god, the layout on the inside of that case is terrible. No wonder HP PCs have a reputation for super short lifespans, the thing's practically intentionally designed to overheat. Instead of a real CPU cooler, you have a heatsink with a $5 case fan strapped on top, BELOW the video card, which is nestled in wires and a TV tuner directly above it, and then above THAT, the PSU. There's no breathing room in there for anything. It's like a deathtrap of computer components. I'd be worried about this thing burning your house down if you had it running while sitting on carpet.

zmh0312 wrote:So this intel i5 faster than amd six core process?

No, the i5 is a dual core hyperthread processor which means it only has 2 physical cores just each core has 2 threads which work not quite as well but similar to a 4 core processor. If you are using applications that only require 2 cores then an amd six core processor with 3.2 ghz or slower speed will be worse then the i5 on this computer otherwise the amd six core will be better
