Just got mine. Same update problem. I feel regret for buying this..... >=(

Same problem here. Got mine today... All excited to unpack it and fire it up, only to have it run through a crummy update that doesn't work. No option to skip the update or anything... Just a useless special options screen!!! Easily the most disappointing woot purchase in a long time. I'll call up Sony and give them a shot at replacing it, but I would rather have it work the first time, Mr. Woot/Mr. Sony. Boooooooooo!

I just got mine in the mail today as well, and like all the other fellow Wooters:

1) Got my confirmation email saying the Dash was in the mail 2 hours AFTER I got my unit

2) Turned on my dash in giddy 'I just got a brand new outfit' schoolgirl excitement to try out my new expensive alarm clock, only to have it force me to update and then NOT update. I even tried restoring defaults and returning to operations after hitting that Jatravartid special screen several times. Oh, hit "+" to cancel the update? OH WHAT WAS THAT?! YOU'RE GOING TO TAKE ME BACK TO THE MAIN PAGE AND SAY YOU NEED TO UPDATE ANYWAY? Oh ok, thanks for that.

Impressive, just impressive. How you can manage to sell a product that doesn't work upon opening it from the box is just astonishingly bad. But it's ok, I'm not mad. I'm just disappointed.

Seriously though, -5 points for Sony. Woot, you make me sad sometimes.

I think this is also Woot's fault for selling shoddy products that they did not even care to open and turn on / test once. Clearly all these people having problems straight out of box should not have to solely blame the manufacturer (even though it is absolutely their fault for this poor product). The seller is at fault as well.

As with others, my Dash firmware is 1.0.1111 which does not allow update via Internet or USB. So basically I wasted 30 minutes fiddling with my new purchase and now have to ship it to Sony who (hopefully) will remember to replace it with a new one. Either Woot got duped or duped us.

Totally agree with you. Shame on both Sony and Woot for this debacle.

Anyway, playing with it for a while. I really like it and it would be perfect if there actually were "1,000's" of apps. On Sony's website there are a few hundred, mostly redundant apps. Thing would border on perfect if it could do Skype. It has a mic but I'm not seeing any app that uses it.

How many of those are fart apps?

Add me to the list... it insists on updating firmware and then won't do it. So it's a plug in brick at this point. Very dissapointed in my first woot purchase.

Indeed! (first time poster....but long time wooter) ... first, well, second woot that's been a dud. (Got a SANSA 2GB MP3 thing that had a dead backlight... woot took care of me on that one).

But, now this one ... now we know where woot got the pallet full of Sony Dash's from... they got all the crap ones!

an update that doesn't work makes an $80 brick that does nothing but play a snappy intro video. not happy woot, not happy at all.

Just an FYI:

If you do have the 1.0.1111 - you have to call Sony Support. If you tell them right off that it's the 1.0.1111 firmware issue, they don't both to haggle you with typical 1st-tier tech support crap.

(Don't bother with the web-based chat support... those people are Arthurs).

Sony will issue you an RMA number and will send you a UPS call tag.

Basically, another 30 day wait for your Sony Dash.

(I guess the good news is that Woot is going to have a whole bunch more Sony Dash refurbs soon!)

I can't help but think that Woot knew exactly what they were selling, but chose not to inform us. It will certainly make me think twice about ever buying anything from them again.

Can someone please post the phone number you've been using to contact Sony? Thanks.

Considering that the refurb Dash I bought a couple months ago had a newer firmware than the one many people are receiving now something definitely stinks. Someone was well aware of the fact that these are bricks before they shipped and shipped them anyway. That's not just bad business, it's fraud.

I get mine in a couple days, if it can't be updated I will be bypassing Sony support and going straight to my State's AG. I have more than 75 woots. I have put up with a gob of lousy shipping and questionable service. I will not put up with deliberate fraud. I hope my fears are for naught and all is well.

Thanks for the phone no. I called them and got someone who didn't seem to be familiar with the problem. He provided me with a somewhat different resolution-- e-mailing me a UPS label (not FedEx) and then telling me that my unit would be updated and returned to me within 7-10 days. So either something has changed or he's not aware of the FedEx/replacement model protocol.

I too just received my $80 Dash brick (yup it won't update). Woot should be dealing with this problem as (apparently) ALL 3000+ of these new units are bad! No one should have to individually call Sony to get their unit fixed.

I also agree with you 100%. Something needs to be done and Woot needs to step their game up and apologize for this fiasco. Woot do you hear us? What are you doing about this?!

got my bricked v. 1.0.1111 ... Saw the comments here and called customer service. They acknowledged the problem, I received an Event ID and shipped it out today, I didn't want to spend time waiting for a shipping tag so I just spent the $6 shipping it to them.

I better get a damned return...

That's pretty well it, Johns43. They told me that they were going to REPLACE it, though, not updated and return it. The a new unit would be enroute to me 7-10 days after receipt of the defective one.

And, they are using "Fedex Ground" for their return - and I got my label same day - within about 30 minutes of calling - and my wife is dropping it off at Fedex this evening.

If I'm lucky, 2 weeks more and I get a new dash.

Everyone who got one of these bad firmware Dash's should let Woot know. Here's the email response I just got from Woot support:

As of this moment, we have not received a significant number of emails that leads us to believe all the units sold of this item have bad firmware on them. That said, Sony is responsible as the product manufacturer for providing the firmware on the device. With regard to yours, we can either attempt a replacement order or provide a return label to send back the defective unit for a refund only. Please advise on how you would like to proceed.

That's pretty funny. I emailed them this morning and explained it. I got a similar response offering a replacement (another DOA, I assume) or refund. I emailed back and suggested they look at this discussion because I'm not alone. They got a bad shipment it appears.

Mine has a manufacture date of July 2010 and came with FW 1.7.1186, powered up and connected without any problems. Several downloads and updates later, it's at 1.7.1371 Whew!

Since I didn't get a big pallet of goodness with my Big o' Cosmos, I guess I'll have to settle for a working Sony Dash.

KuoH, was yours one of the New ones, or the reconditioned ones?

ChrisBieda

quality posts: 0 Private Messages ChrisBieda

Woot and Sony have much to be embarrassed about with this one. I think the major embarrassment is Sony's, however; I can't imagine what bonehead didn't anticipate bricking all the FW 1.0.1111 models in existence. I'm certain he or she expected all of them to have already been updated to intermediate versions of the FW--apparently it is only the most recent update that will not take on the 1.0.1111's--but that bespeaks a lack of imagination: There is ALWAYS legacy product stuck in the pipeline, engineers. Please remember that.

OTOH, since Woot has condemned all 3394 units sold on April 11 to return-to-Woot-for-refund or return-to-Sony-for-replacement status (and BTW, Sony reps are saying that you have 30 days to get a brand-new unit, rather than a refurb, FYI, so get on the phone, people), Woot would do well to issue $5 goodwill credits.

I am also in the same boat. Ordered 4/11, just got it today. I had the same problem as many with it not updating but on the 3rd or so try it finally did. Mine came with 1.7.1186.

Hmmm. These are supposed to be NEW items. Why would the factory install version 1.0.1111 on units in June, and then just one month later, put 1.7.1186 on July manufactured ones. Smells of factory refurb to me. I'll bet 1.7 came out a whole lot later than July 2010.

Got mine today and received the 1.0.1111 model. Complete brick. What galls me the most is that after reading the comments on the Sony board it is clear that they were totally aware of this issue for some time now and STILL shipped the product. SHAME on you SONY! A pox upon your house!!!

Another person that got a brick. Massively disappointing. I'm stuck in the same endless firmware update loop that most everyone else is. Mine was manufactured in June 2010 and has the 1.0.1111 firmware.

I just called Sony on this. They will replace all Sony Dashes with a 1.0.1111 firmware. Call them on their support line @ 1-800-222-7669.

I'm shipping them mine back and they are mailing mine to me with the latest firmware.

This is not necessarily a Sony problem. Sony makes the product but they do not control the products wrapped up once its out of their stores. These systems with the 1.0.1111 are the initial release of the product. They probably should have recalled them to updated them manually. However vendors who've stocked the item can't open the box to flash them without forcing to sell the items as open box. Its up to you to either make the update work or get Sony to replace it for you with an updated firmware.

This definitely sounds like a Sony problem - on their servers. They ought to have software updates assured for ALL versions of their product and the units should automatically connect, regardless of how old they are.

Shameful,absolutely shameful.

Guys and Gals,

Got my new dash today (4/11 order). It came with the 1.7.1186 and never faltered updating. I'm sorry to hear from the users of all the bad problems happening with the device. I wish you the best of luck. I'll check back if anyone has any questions.
