And you're confusing woot with amazon, even though one does own the other now. There is a reason the deals here are priced the way they are and a certain risk inherent with buying anything from woot, and that has not changed since day 1. Click on the what is woot link to refresh your memory.

I'm not saying that woot should leave all buyers high and dry, and they have indeed stepped up to the plate in the past for things that have been blatently wrong, such as refurbs being incorrect labeled as new. However, I don't see that issue with the dash. From all accounts here, the products were new, and either Sony will replace the affected units or woot will let you rma yours, OR you can try and apply the usb flash fix that has been found. It's obvious NOW that not all units were from the same batch and there was no way woot could tell which was which from the outside, even if they wanted to expend the labor and pass the cost increase on to us. Just how much blood do you expect to squeeze out of this turnip?

I looked and nope, I didn't see the part where they say they will send out bricks disguised as Internet appliances and charge you $85 for them. I understand sometimes a defective product gets by. I'm still trying to get a replacement for a DOA Kitrics scale I bought on 3/16. As they instructed, I am trying to get that company to step up. Since the bulk of those were actually functional when woot shipped them I have no problem going through the defective product ritual, even if it has been unsuccessful so far. I don't hold woot responsible for that one.

This is different. They either did know or could easily have known that these products were defective and shipped them anyway. And no, it dosn't require one to open every package. It's a fair bet that Sony knows what firmware is on every device they sell by serial number and which serial numbers they sold woot. Whatever, this dead horse has been beaten enough. If the usb fix works it is moot anyway.

Success at last, I hope! It's updating the firmware off the USB drive as I type... It wouldn't work with my PNY 2gb Attache thumbdrive - I had my doubts using a FAT filesystem on an unpartitioned 2gb drive. The Dash did load from my roommate's 512mb flash drive.

If anyone got a June 2010 manufactured Dash and can't update (if you haven't already sent it back), you should try borrowing a different flash drive if you don't have success at first. Read the previous posts, and make this thing work... today.

I thought I was screwed for sure, until I tried it on a different usb drive..

I got my Sony Dash today. Same as everyone else, it will not update software and will not work without the update. A useless paperweight. Firmware version 1.0.1111. Thanks Woot for selling me an $80 lump of coal!

Hey everybody! Found the fix! Go to page 2 of this forum post and you'll find a link to the hosted zip file on easy-share. Extract the two files to the root of a USB drive (FAT formatted), and plug it into your unplugged dash. Hold the menu button while you plug it in and keep it held through the black and white sony screen. When it goes to all black, you can let go. After the white "scanner" screen, you'll get options to upload the update via USB. Just did mine and it seems to be working. No idea why Sony won't just release this file officially. Prolly don't want a bunch of bricks or to give you any ideas about hacking with cooked ROMs. Have fun!

Anyone know of a site I could upload the SonyDash.zip file to so that others can download it. It worked to fix my problem with the looping updates.

Called Sony & as soon as they heard what firmware version I had ...

1.0.1111

They immediately said that this version will not allow a software update from network or USB and the unit must be shipped back to Sony.

They are emailing a shipping label which I will receive in 24-48 hrs. Then once they receive my unit, they will ship me a new one within 7-10 days.

Major Bummer to have to wait another 2 weeks!

SonyDash.zip

There is a direct link to the firmware update. download and unzip the file. Place both files on the root of a jump drive and should work to update the firmware.

YAY! My Dash works now. Thanks for everyone's hard work in finding the solution.

I downloaded the SonyDash.zip file from the below link and followed these instructions previously posted by JOOKYSEAPSTOR to install

Extract the two files to the root of a USB drive (FAT formatted), and plug it into your unplugged dash. Hold the menu button while you plug it in and keep it held through the black and white sony screen. When it goes to all black, you can let go. First try with USB drive I couldn't choose it. Reset again, waited a few minutes while I browsed forums (I left it on the system screen where you can reset to use, install or factory reset) then after a few minutes chose to install and I could choose USB! Just give it a few minutes the choose usb won't be immediate but it did work for me. I am now on FW: 1.7.1371. YAY!

Installed the USB key update listed above and now it works perfectly. I put in the USB key before I put in the power plug and just let it do its thing.

Thanks so much for saving me a 2 week return to Sony!

Updated by USB. It may not be Sony or Woot, but the retailer who had these left who sold them to Woot. But both could have been heroes by posting the fix instead of the community having to find the work around.

Sure Netflix can be streamed. Be sure to use the Dash-specific app that's in the Video menu selection. On first use you'll need to register the device on the Netflix site using a code the Dash generates.

Maybe you've run into a less-functional add-on Chumby app?

I received my Dash, and seems I lucked out, it was able to update the firmware fine... however, I can't register/create an account.

I get the error: "An internal error occurred with error code "-105". Please see the logs for more information."
(yes, it had """ on the page rather than actual quotes)

I tried both making a new account via the suggested www.sony.com/mydash, and also making a chumby account first, then "linking" it to a new Sony account at: http://dash.chumby.com/dash/associate_new
both give me the error above. Anyone else seen this? I've skimmed the comments here and not found the error yet... Hoping their page starts working soon...

I registered a few hours ago and was moseying around the dashboard when it suddenly logged me out. When I tried to log back in, my email wasn't even in use anymore. It's like I never created the account... but my dash still shows my username. I tried to re-register and got the same error you did. Doesn't help that I can't de-register the dash, it's still logged into the account name.

Oh, when I try to log into the Sony support forum, there's a connection issue. When I type in a fake email and password, it correct states that the information is incorrect. I think something is wrong with my Sony Essentials account or whatever.

piercedgeek

quality posts: 4 Private Messages piercedgeek

I'd go as far to say something is wrong with Sony Essentials period, not just your account.
Going to:
https://internet.sony.tv/customer
(without having any sort of account or cookies of previous logins)
results in:
Error in My ESSENTIALS
An internal error occurred with error code "-108". Please see the logs for more information.

I wonder if something broke on its own, or Sony disabled access to essentials as a result of some of the issues people are having with Dash?
Oh well, hoping it won't be down long, would be nice to get Pandora and Netflix going.

I too received a 1.0.1111 Dash stuck on update. I had little luck contacting Sony support, however I was able to use the SonyDash.zip file to get the device working!

The procedure was simple:

1) Download the SonyDash.zip file and extract its contents to the root of a USB drive.
2) Power down the unit, insert the USB drive, hold the "Menu" button, and power up. Once the screen telling you to hold the button for 3 seconds goes away, you can let go of the "Menu" button.
4) Try to do an update from the USB drive. It could take a while, but you should see some progress bars.

The various download links appear to be mostly broken, so I make a torrent file. PLEASE SEED, there aren't many of us, but at least we can get the file out there:

Well, I think my Dash is borked. I had the same update problem, so I used the USB update method. The update with the USB went perfectly fine, and all was well for awhile, then I needed to move the Dash to my bedside after I got it all configured.

Unplugged it, then moved to bedside and plugged it back in, now all I'm getting is a white screen that fades out to black and fades back to white. Won't start. Even holding the button as it boots for a hard reset won't get it going again.

I had this same problem just now, can't log into my account anymore.

Now I'm starting to wonder if Sony is remotely bricking the units for installing the software?

I'm going to unplug it and leave it overnight. If it still doesn't function tomorrow morning it's going back to woot.

This is a truly epic fail. Sony site is still locking out logins and their forums are offline. I can't even manage the dash I bought 2 months ago that had been working perfectly. Sony has reached my most hated company list. Woot will be there, too, if they don't start posting some useful information here. Come on, woot. Make some calls on our behalf and tell us what the deal is. After all, you do have our money.

Double good news the AM

The file from the Google Docs link works just fine. Extracted it to a thumb drive, inserted in the dash and plugged in the dash.

The extra good news is that this version of the software has a screen keyboard with much bigger keys. Useful for us big finger folk.
