Flashlight nerds want to know what the lens is made of? If it is plastic, can the lens be removed and what diameter it is. What circuit if any it uses to drive the LED would be nice to know too.

Love these single CREE LED lights. Lots of people buy the multiple-LED lights, because they're generally cheaper, thinking that the lights are comparable. They're not. These CREE lights are much better for several reasons:

1) Using the same amount power, single LEDs are generally brighter and more efficient

2) CREE LEDs give out a pure white light. Cheaper white LEDs generally have a bluish tint. That's because white LEDs work like fluorescent lights, where white phosphors are excited by UV light. In cheaper LEDs, you can see the UV, which gives off a bluish tint.

3) Multiple LEDs interfere with each other, both in terms of wave interference and by casting multiple shadows. That results in a "blurry" light. A single LED gives out a well-defined intense beam.

=======

My only qualm about this flashlight is the use of D batteries. While D batteries have a very long lifespan, they're expensive, large and heavy. And rechargeable D batteries are hard to find. All my 10+ LED flashlights use AA or AAA batteries.

Also, this flashlight only has one mode: 120 lumens. There is no Low mode, or Flashing mode.

On the plus side, this can make a good weapon.

Not all of us have a Costco or Sam's nearby. I live in NYC and we don't even have a Walmart. S/h negates any discount those stores may have.

D batteries was a Jatravartid choice. Few of us use a flashlight frequently enough to deplete even AA batteries. Heck, I have a flashlight using a single AA battery that is still on its first battery after a year. And rechargeable D NiMH batteries are pretty difficult to find. Low discharge D NiMH batteries like Eneloops are non-existent.

Ran mine for hours, haven't seen it fail yet. Given 3 watts @ 3 volts, and a typical D cell:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D_battery

12 hours. But I suspect you'll get more than that out of it.

P=V*I
3W=3V*I
I=1A
D Cell Alkaline=1A/hour for 12 hours or 12000 mah.
Can't multiply by the number of cells, since they are in series not parallel.

(Not bad for a drunk math major if I do say so myself.)

Why do you use a flashlight so often? And if you carry it outside a lot, wouldn't an AA-sized flashlight be more convenient? You can also use low discharge rechargeable NiMH batteries, i.e. Eneloops, in AA flashlights.

I prefer a LED headlamp for outdoor activities, i.e. this Garrity lamp from a previous Woot.. Not only is it convenient to have my hands free, but the thing also floats. And there are red LEDs for safety as well as a flashing mode.

They're inexpensive, thin polycarbonate, comparable to a Maglite lens. I can't get the lens out to measure it exactly, but it's about 1 5/8" or 1 11/16".

Actually, good ones cost almost $10/cell, so $30 (two in the light, two spare), but they last ~500 charges, which really is a long time.

Oh, you meant the kind of batteries you throw away? Guess I'd rather spend that money on constantly buying more flashlights, instead of constantly buying more batteries, but suit yourself. ;)

I used 2/$1 heavy duty D cells in my 3W Brinkman, 2-3 minutes every day cleaning up after dogs at night and spotting deer and they lasted for 14 months. I estimate 15-20 hours of total run time. I can hardly believe it myself.

Briefly, but fine. 1500 mAh per AA cell gives you less than an hour and a half of battery life at 3W. Unless this flashlight has a voltage regulator (I am doubtful, given the price), the NiMH cells will keep it brighter than equally-sized alkaline would until running down. You can get a feel for AA battery life by looking at the 1A discharge curves on this page: http://www.powerstream.com/AA-tests.htm
