It's a time-honored tradition in human history: melodic tributes to where you're from, why it's so great, and why everywhere else sucks. Back in the old days it manifested as thunderous war cries of feuding nations; it slowly evolved into more regal, dignified calls signifying royalty and then ponderous, sleep-inducing national anthems. From there the musical evolutionary tree broke in two: football chants for Europe and songs about individual states over here in America.

But which song best conveys the life, the days and nights, the very EXPERIENCE of the state it celebrates? To decide that would take hours of deliberation among musical and cultural historians. Or I could pick based on a cursory Google search. Yeah, let's do it that way.

Welcome to a new Weekly Woot Series: "The United States of Songs." The rules are simple: the state must be mentioned in the title and be the main focus of the song. None of this "I met a girl from Texas" crap. It had better be a song about Texas. Second, the song has to make you feel like you're there, or if you haven't been there, it has to feel exactly like you would picture being there would feel. When you hear the music you can close your eyes and think, "It's like I'm back in New Mexico, minus all the warrants." Oh and PS: I didn't write the songs, so I accept no responsibility if the lyrics are NSFW. I will try to warn you if a song is particularly brutal, but if you hear an occasional curse word and your ears burst into flames don't send me angry messages.

Without further adieu, here's our (alphabetically) first state:

The State: Alabama

The Song: "My Home's in Alabama" by Alabama

I just had that weird moment where you type a word so many times that it starts to look weird, like it must be misspelled or something. "Alabama" just looks bizarre to me now. Anyway, I know what you're thinking: "Oh come ON, this is a cop out. You picked it just because the band's named Alabama." Not true. Fort Payne's golden boys' loving tribute to the Yellowhammer State not only idolizes their homeland, it captures the Alabama experience perfectly.

It starts pretty lonely, which is a weird trend in songs about Alabama. If you were expecting some raucous Southern rock or Lynyrd Skynyrd's ubiquitous bar anthem, you'd probably be surprised. People who sing about Alabama tend to be stoic in the face of some depression, usually about missing Alabama. But the quiet, baleful guitar epitomizes lonely nights flying down I-65 to try and get to Mobile so you can hook a left and get to your vacation rental in Gulf Shores or (traitor) Pensacola.

Lyrically, it's exactly what you'd expect to hear upon talking to someone from Alabama. He misses home ("My / home's in Alabama, no matter where I lay my head / My home's in Alabama, Southern born and Southern bred"), home is awesome, and hell yes he's Southern and proud of it ("Oh I'll speak my Southern English just as natural as I please / I'm in the heart of Dixie, Dixie's in the heart of me").

Alabama Landing Houseboat
Be honest. This is what you thought the whole state looks like.

This isn't a song for the tourism board. Randy Owen would have to sing this tune even if no one was around to listen; it's not about convincing anybody Alabama's great, it's about reveling in the knowledge he already has that Alabama is awesome. And when you realize that in 2000 the Alabama State Senate passed a bill (which unfortunately died later in the State House) to make the song the "official State Ballad," you realize Alabamans agree.

I'm by no means a fan of Alabama (the band, I mean. My family vacationed in Gulf Shores as a kid so I have a bit of a soft spot for it, racial tensions of Birmingham aside.), and I had fully intended on kicking this series off with something a little more rock 'n roll, but damn if this isn't a good song. Congratulations Alabama (the state), so far you're my favorite entry. Okay sure, you're the first, but don't get pedantic and spoil this.

Runner Up: "Everything is Legal in Alabama" by Bob Wayne
Most Laughable Suggestion: "Birmingham Blues" by Charlie Daniels

Got a better song for Alabama? Want to start suggestions for your state before I get there? Let me know in the comments!

I was surprised more that this wasn't number...it's like, the second most famous Lynyrd Skynyrd song and probably one of the more famous southern rock songs. I've never been to a tractor pull that didn't play it...but then again, I've never been to a tractor pull.

*puts on glasses with Alabama-shaped frames.*

I guess I just listen to more underground songs about Alabama.

FREEBIRD!!! Okay fine, but seriously, "Sweet Home Alabama" should have gotten some kind of real attention even if it would have been perceived as the cop out choice for the state. Maybe I should spend some time figuring out what anyone ever had to say about Rhode Island in song though. Can't imagine it's anything good. Hell, even the URI fight song is "We're Rhode Island born and Rhode Island bred, and when we die we'll be Rhode Island dead." I strive everyday to try and ensure that doesn't prove to be personally true.

Cool idea! Not sure you're gonna find a lot of material for say Vermont though.

From someone who has spent the last 7 years living and working here, I'm not sure any song/video quite sums up what it's like more then this one does. It's important to have the visual though (an EPIC piece of work I might add), and maybe in some respects it's the visual that really tells the story—still, best one by far IMO.

Fort Wayne is in Indiana. Population about 250k.

Some people from there: Stephen King, Dave Thomas, Shelley Long.

Some people not from there: the band Alabama. The band formed in Fort Payne, Alabama, Sock Capital of the World.

As someone who has spent her entire life in Alabama: THANK YOU FOR NOT CHOOSING "SWEET HOME ALABAMA." And not just because I'm so incredibly sick of hearing it, but because it would've been a lazy choice.

I know you did Alabama because you're just starting this and alphabetically, we're first... but I'm going to keep thinking what I initially thought, which is that this was a tribute to our currently tornado-ravaged state.

A rap redux of Sweet Home Alabama:

A sample of the lyrical goodness:

Wow, I've never heard that song, but it was really moving. :-) I'm a northern boy from Indiana, but it hit me right...there. :-) I was expecting Sweet Home Alabama like the other commenters but this is really a good song.

EDIT: um, why does my avatar have cleavage? sheesh. *gestures emphatically at username*

Not sure how that happened. I blame an overzealous spellchecker.

Last one and then I'll stop flooding the comments:

To everyone suggesting "Sweet Home Alabama," it IS an iconic song, but in my experience it's more iconic as a bar song. So in hearing it you could close your eyes and picture yourself in pretty much any smoky dive bar with a juke box, not necessarily Alabama.

The idea with these songs is that they should transport you to the state they exalt.

NEW JERSEY: Jersey Girl by Bruce Springsteen (not the original Tom Waits version). A Jersey song for a Jersey girl sung by a Jersey Boy.

New York: Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind"; it's one of the few NY songs that's about the state and not about NYC.

Texas: "The Eyes of Texas are Upon You". "Yellow Rose of Texas" is about a woman, not about the state. "Abilene" is about the city, not about the state.

California: "California, Here I Come".

Oklahoma: "Oklahoma" by Rogers and Hammerstein.

Mississippi: "Mississippi Mud"

As an Alabama ex-pat, let me say that "Alabama's grand- the state, NOT the band". Lowest common denominator dreck of the worst kind. For a truer representation check out the Drive By Truckers' THREE ALABAMA ICONS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MIztbe1_e8
And you may be surprised to hear that we are not all knuckle draggers and mouth breathers. Some of us have library cards. Some have PHD's.

Let me consult my "California" playlist in iTunes (which also includes songs about San Francisco)...

Ah, here it is. The best song about CA: California by Jay Farrar (from Terroir Blues)

I don't think anyone needs to be reminded how crappy Southern California is. Great video, though.

Having spent the first 24 years of my life in Alabama, I couldn't agree more with your choice of song. Even though I moved away, it's a very relevant song to me (southern born and southern bred).

I do want to take issue with the original statement "This isn't a song for the tourism board." In fact, this song was used extensively by the Alabama State Park System in the early 1980s to promote Alabama in tv commercials, and is probably the reason it is known to the few Alabamians who aren't country music lovers.

Albama (the band) - so good. One of only a handful of country acts I really enjoy. Wish they had never performed "Cheap Seats" though. That song sucks and it seems to be what most of my generation associates them with.

Sadly, I can't think of any useful ideas for Missouri or Kansas, the only two states I'd be willing to toss out an idea for. "Kansas City" could be shared by both, but I've gotta say it's not a very fair representation of life here. I have seen very few "crazy little women" here, and I certainly don't expect to "get me one"

I'm with heyjoie. I do love Sweet Home Alabama, but it reminds me of jumping on tables in bars and dodging pool cues. Which could happen in any bar. I like this song, it lets me think I'm sitting by the lake at my folks house instead of at work.

And D*&$ these tornados messed us up this time!

As an Iowan, I'd be totally okay with "Iowa Stubborn" from The Music Man.

I've never lived in Indiana, but "Indiana Christmas" by Straight No Chaser may be a good choice.

Paper Rival's "Alabama," also; they sing about how it's the 'state where fast is always slow, so the wind can't ever blow. Hopelessly yours alabama.' Some of the content may be a bit stereotypical, but the song is so beatifully executed, I can't help but over look that. They're from Nashville, so it's probably ok, anyhow, being from a southern state themselves.

For newer stuff, "God Bless Alabama" by Shooter Jennings.

You probably had the right song, but let me suggest "Stars Fell On Alabama", either the Dinah Shore or Jimmy Buffett version.

Also, regarding "Sweet Home Alabama", not the right song in your criteria, but it's well loved here. We even loved when Kid Rock sang a song about singing the song.

Also, "Ala freaking Bama" is just wrong. Wrong on so many levels.

Looking ahead, "Louisiana" by Randy Newman is the winner or this thing is rigged.

It may be a great song, but let me assure you that the wind (ie tornados) DOES blow in Alabama. It has been weird, cause even in my neighborhood, which is mostly untouched, one house was hit by lighting & was burned badly enough that the family has to move out while it's fixed. The house is at the bottom of the hill, so WHY that house was hit, I don't know.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Neil Young's song "Alabama;" after all, it's probably the reason that Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote "Sweet Home Alabama."

You might not know that some in Alabama think that "Sweet Home Alabama" is actually supporting Neil Young's song about the state. For instance, when they say "In Birmingham They Love the Governor" (It was George Wallace at the time), the background lyrics say "Boo Boo Boo." I've lived in the Birmingham area all my life, and I can tell you that Wallace was not loved by most people in Birmingham.

Good start with the song "Sweet Home Alabama", however your picture is a couple of states off. I took that picture on the Ouachita River in North Louisiana. The location got it's name from immigrants from Alabama, they would travel up the Ouachita River in the migration to the west. When the river got to shallow to go any further, they would land and continue westward across land, Hence the Name " Alabama Landing"

thank you

Great suggestion. Another I'd suggest is "All Along the Bayou" by Evangeline. It's not on YouTube, but is on other music sites.
