You cannot use Calibre to convert any e-book or document that is DRM protected.

Um, that’s not true. Calibre allows for third-party plugins do the de-DRM work instead of the user messing around with Python (or Applescript) scripts.

I had fun converting my entire ereader library (thanks B&N for killing fictionwise! well, the Agency model didn't help either) to other formats (e.g., mobi and epub).

Yes, there are some people who will remove the DRM, but many people will not, and Kovid, the creator of Calibre, does not support that use of Calibre.

Just in case you don't get a charger, but I'm guessing that you will---some cellphone chargers fit the kindle. Mine does and works beautifully. Just like cellphone chargers the Kindle's charger is a combination USB/AC charger.

So you're in Woot's back yard. I'm up in Borger (in the panhandle) so hopefully I'll see mine before the weekend. Hasn't shipped yet though...

I guess there's a little more motivation to ship fast when it's an item that will keep generating revenue indefinitely!

(Yes, I ordered one too. I haven't gotten a ship notification yet, but I ordered pretty late last night.)

Awesome about the fast shipping! Thanks Woot.

2 for wedding gifts and 1 for my wife's romance novel obsession. Now I'll be able to pretend she's reading Wuthering Heights while she can enjoy Sweltering Nights.

Hope that cases from JAVOedge get there too.

My mom just got hers in Louisiana, I am shocked at the speed of delivery! She got the usb charger, and is heading to get a wall charger to plug that usb into. wtg woot, you made my mom very happy! here's hoping it's not too "complicated" for her to comprehend. i love my momma, but she isn't very tech savvy.

I'm excited to get mine, however, I'm not familiar with FedEx's delivery, and this is the first thing I buy off woot. Would FedEx need my signature? Or would they leave it at my doorstep?

Thanks to whoever answers. This would take some anxiety off my plate. Hi from Seattle!

I've never had a Woot package show up that needed a signature. They will probably knock twice, and if their is no answer leave it on your doorstep or in a place that is out of sight from the street (At least that is what my local hub does)

Confirming the above answer- we don't require signatures on any of our orders. Hello Seattle! We have some coworkers all up in you too.

There is no power cord, only a USB cable which you use to charge the Kindle from your computer. If you have a USB AC adaptor (like you use for your ipod/iphone) you can use it to charge the kindle as well.

What does refurbished or recertified mean? Click here to find out.

The instructions on the kindle show a definite power cord, not just a USB cord...see instruction 1. So what if I can charge it on the USB? If Woot is going to sell something without including everything that an original should have, it should say so.

Ditto this. Ordered it just before lunch, Central time. Up to five business days notwithstanding, all the stories of speedy deliveries are giving me an itchy F5 finger.

We always note what will be included "In the box" on the original sale page:

In the box:

Kindle Electronic Reader – 2nd Gen
Rechargeable Battery (Pre-installed in the device)
USB 2.0 Cable

Wow, fast shipping! Too bad the menu button on mine doesn't work. Maybe they should check that before they check off a refurb unit

That's really strange for Amazon, so far stellar service with them. At least I know returning it won't be a problem. Was looking forward to it at the end of a bad day though. How do I get to warranty service for this? I don't contact rma@woot, right?

Actually yeah. Amazon support call did the trick. They had to do some voodoo to register the Kindle to me before they could replace it, but I should have a replacement Thursday. Hopefully it works!

I just set up about 80 free books from various sources waiting on the Kindle (Using Calibre to convert when needed). I read pretty much everyday and look forward to adding this to my arsenal. Usually I use the library for my books (that or hand me downs) so I may only have limited use for it, but who knows, maybe I will even buy a book for once.

Anyone wanting free sci-fi can get a bunch of books at Baen. Some old best sellers are in the free library there. Many of their books include a CD with all the books on it too. Very handy for catching up to a series. I have already read most all of the classics that are on archive.org, but with thousands more there, I should find something.

Anyone have a problem Registering their Kindle?
Had one delivered to a friend in Houston. She got it this afternoon (thx Woot!), but it had no 'quick start guide' which also has the registration number on it :-(. What now?

Just got the email with shipping info...I ordered around 6pm CDT and it will arrive Friday in California. Not bad, considering that many times Woot's email arrives the same day as the package :-)

So it will get here in plenty of time to learn it and load it with some books before my 10-day trip...fantastic. WOOT-WOOT!

Funkthulhu wrote:Okay, I'm a reader, and a collector.

I've got a personal library of well over 500 volumes at this point. Aside from the obvious advantages/disadvantages (Color photos, larger format, wear & tear, moving a couple tonnes of books...) what I want to know about is the post hardware cost.

Where do I find cheap books? (ie, free) I get nearly all of my books from used bookstores, almost never buy new books when they come out, and have the patience to wait for a deal on a hard copy. (often from Amazon for a few bucks!) Plus, any book I buy goes on the shelf to be reread by me later, lent out to friends, and passed on to those who come after me. There just isn't the same impact if I hand my niece a thumb-drive instead of something she can hold.

Explain to me why most of the Ebooks I've seen on the Kindle-store cost more than a paperback? I'm open-minded, I know a portion of the cost of a new book goes to offsetting the cost of printing and paper before the publisher or the author gets a penny. But I sincerely doubt that dropping 10 bucks on an Ebook is getting the author or the publisher anywhere close to the same amount of money as a physical copy. Considering we're dealing with digital media, why aren't most of the books available just a couple bucks or just A Buck for older media? (or Free?)

I'm sorry this is mostly a rant, but I just haven't had anybody I know who has a Kindle (or a Nook) and has been able to "sell it".

So, sell me! What am I gaining by buying any Ebook reader, let alone this one? How much more money have you thrown down the digital hole never to see again? Or am I missing something blatantly obvious that will make me feel silly?

(And then, after clicking around enough, I found Amazon's links to free books. 2.5 Million?!? So, yeah, plenty to read there, but what about the rest of it?)

The obvious sites are manybooks and gutenberg, but an excellent site for current books is freebookspot.com
