Does it come with a case?
I also need to hook up my Bluetooth to it.

Seems to me Woot pretty much covered what it is, what it comes with and what's needed.

Apple iPad Vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab Video, Oct 27, 2010

In this video we compare two of the hottest tablets on the market, the Apple iPad, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab. This debate is reminiscent of the iOS vs. Android arguments raging on cell phone's but on a larger (literally) scale. We put the two head to head and declare a winner.

Just bought a wifi only Xoom a month ago but I might get one for the wife since she really likes the Xoom and I'm not spending another $590 right now.

You will be much happier with Acer iconia than a silly oversized phone

Personally I'm not interested in a 10-inch tablet, also that one costs nearly twice as much. I think in the near future there should be a good selection of 7-inch tablets running 3.0 on dual-core processors but they probably won't be this cheap until at least Christmas.

Right now this is about the best value going if you want something this size.

I think they're less comparable than you imagine because I would carry this everywhere but I can't imagine what I would use a 10-inch tablet for. The A500 (isnt' that an Amiga?) seems like a cool device and I'm glad you're enjoying yours but I guess we have different needs.

Darlin' Sprint doesn't use SIM cards. There are 2 types of carriers in the US, GSM and CDMA. GSM uses SIM cards while CDMA (Sprint & Verizon) do not.

JoeMarfice wrote:If you swap the SIM card from another phone, you can usually bypass that requirement. I spent $10 on an AT&T throwaway phone, just to get the SIM card. Leave the store, swap the card into my PDA phone, and Boom! no data charges.

Of course, my only data access is Wifi, but I assume that's what you're planning on, given your question.

Only the Verizon Galaxy Tab required you to activate it before using the WiFi. To my understanding you can use the Sprint Galaxy Tab without ever having to activate it. Buy it, turn it on, connect to a wifi hotspot and voila!

klacour wrote:What are you talking about? It is unlocked - you only need go to Sprint if you want 3G connectively. Otherwise, use WiFi.

You do not need a data plan to use it. If it did woot would say so. And it tells you in the description very plainly you can connect via wifi, bluetooth, or 3G. Don't worry!

Correct. These have been returned as defective and repaired OR most have just been returned from persons that weren't happy or just wanted to try them out and then return within that 30 day window most carriers have.

Sprint data only tablet plans start at $29.99 for 2 gb. That's very reasonable too.

these were just released not too long ago... and they are already putting out refurbished ones? Not too promising as far as QA is concerned!

If you aren't on Sprint, you might be thinking "I'll just buy the WiFi only version", however, I wouldn't recommend it. The WiFi only version is about as expensive as this Woot deal, but we've found information showing that it's uses less powerful hardware and more dated Bluetooth:

How is $259.99 "about as expensive" as $349.99?

Let me offer two things about this.

I got one for my wife last January and she still LOVES it (and me). And I gotta say it's pretty awesome.

That said, don't buy this and expect to flash a ROM on it without a lot of heartache. I've successfully done dozens of Nooks, G Tablets and many phones, but the Galaxy Tab is no picnic. There truly is no stable or totally reliable mod for it right now, and therefore is very apt to brick.

Even if you do succeed, getting it back to stock is even harder. You'll find more tales of woe than success stories of reflashing to its original state at XDA-Developers' forums.

Do so at your own risk, but I wouldn't advise it. With the Galaxy Tab, it ain't broke so don't try to fix it. And with an OTA update to Gingerbread coming soon, let it age like a good wine.

JUST my two cents.

The wi-fi functionality will work (you will probably need that button sequence to skip the activation screen). Verizon coverage obviously does not extend to Australia, so no 3G.

Ok - The wife informed me yesterday that she's interested in a tablet. Doesn't want an iPad because it doesn't support editing MS Office documents very well, and that is something she wants.

Now Woot offers me this... Should I jump? Is there something significantly better out there now or in the near future, that won't cost a fortune?

Questions:

Will SMS work with this if I don't sign up with Sprint and go WiFi only?

How well is Google Voice implemented?

Unlikely. The stock Android maps app assumes you're always connected, at least as far as I know. But there may be other apps available on Android Market or other app stores. And I'm not even sure it could locate you in offline mode.

Buy it. Its a great device. Battery life is good. I have this (sprint version). I just use the wi-fi or tether my phone when on the road. You can fit it in the back of your jean pocket. Very convenient. Screen is very good to view. It comes with 16gb micro sd, and can be upgraded to 32gb. Price is very good without a contract. Flash is great on this device. I load books in the TAB and its super. Remember, this unit used to cost $500.

For SMS you need a phone number.

I think there's an app called Textplus that gives you a made up number - it may or may not work for you.

Yes, my cousin loaded an app that does navi without using 3G service just like a tomtom or garmin. He uses a aux output to power his car's entertainment system. He loads all his music and video on it. Bought a nice car attachment for it that holds it very sturdy in his 4runner. Very nice. Battery lasted all more than 6 hours when we drove to Las Vegas. Hope this helps..

Any reason to get this on top of a 4" Samsung Galaxy S phone? I have a Vibrant and I wonder if the tech is the same, just bigger?

Interesting. Do you happen to remember the app's name, and whether it just uses Google's maps when it's online, or it comes with its own maps? Do you need to purchase different maps for different parts of the world, or...?

Just a heads up samsung has a bad phone track record when it comes to fixing things.

They have yet to fix the GPS issues that have been around for half a month on the Samsung Epics. It makes the phones GPS worthless. I want a tablet to use, but will not touch the Samsungs.

You won't get a number unless you activate it with Sprint but there are alternative options out there that work around that.

I have been a Sprint customer for 12 years, and no plans to switch, but a co-worker and I are on a business trip in Argentina, and neither of our Sprint phones work here, nor did mine work in London. Apps work if you connect to wi-fi. This observation is not anything official, but is my sad experience that Sprint doesn't seem to work outside the US.

I'm all ready to buy one as long as I can get an answer to the question of whether or not GPS will work without a data plan. I'm on the fence about this and the ability to use it for navigation while on trip while keeping my phone free to make/receive phone calls puts me over the edge. I'm disheartened because the specs I've found on the wifi-only version of the Galaxy Tab does not mention GPS. The only reason I can think to omit that is if GPS would be useless without the data plan.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some actually light on this and not just bring more conjecture to the table.

There is a link on page 2 to a great 3 part review. In part 2 or 3 they say the gps nav will work w/o data if it is setup on wifi before you leave.

I use Co-Pilot. Uses gps/agps services only, doesn't require data after maps (which are huge, like ~1.2GB) are downloaded. Not free though.
