There's a "so to speak" in there somewhere, just let me finish my coffee.

Edit: Also, surprised Settlers didn't make the list. That's pretty much the only board game I ever find people playing these days. 'Course I work in science & tech research, so my stats are skewed to the nerdy... Anyone up for Go?

Betrayal at House on the Hill

Absolutely fantastic game.

Went out of production a few years back, but I think there is a new edition coming out sooner or later.

It's not a board game, but Fluxx (http://www.looneylabs.com/) is the definite winner around here.

Higher prices AND crappier blanks, no thank you

We would be playing cards or dominoes 97 out of 100 "board game" opportunities. Spades or 42, respectively.

Spades .01% of the time and 42 dominoes 99.99% of the time. Yes, I'm in Texas.

Chess, followed by Backgammon and Battleship, in that order. Easy to learn but hard to master, requiring minimal setup and few expenses - that's what good board games are all about.

I voted Risk. But lately my friends and I have been playing a lot of Wits and Wagers , Taboo , and Scene It.

The game "Munchkin". You can talk to other players during the game, trade cards with other players, etc. See description of game below from the Munchkin website...

"Munchkin is the mega-hit card game about dungeon adventure . . . You and your friends compete to kill monsters and grab magic items. And what magic items! Don the Horny Helmet and the Boots of Butt-Kicking. Wield the Staff of Napalm . . . or maybe the Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment. Start by slaughtering the Potted Plant and the Drooling Slime, and work your way up to the Plutonium Dragon. Go down in the dungeon. Kill everything you meet. Grab the treasure and run. Fast-playing and silly, Munchkin can reduce any roleplaying group to hysteria. And, while they're laughing, you can steal their stuff.
Admit it. You love it."

Nothing feels better than demolishing one's opponents in Trivial Pursuit. However, for some reason, I can't get others to play a second time, unless they are on my side. Therefore, Monopoly has become my game of choice, as there is enough random chance in the dice rolls to give others an even break.
In college, it was chess, but again, not too many replays lately. I guess other people like winning occasionally.

No one has mentioned it, but my favorites to play are
Blokus

and
Catchphrase (electronic version is much easier to organize!)

(I also guess that Catchphrase is LESS board game)

Favorite board games ever?
(can't pick just one!)

Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Dominion . . .

Dominion could arguably be card game rather than a board game, but it scratches the same itch. ^_^

So MANY great games. Most of my loves are sorted here: http://boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/IrishFire

Dominion counts. It's not played with a standard 52 card deck (or subset of those cards), so it's not a card game like Canasta, Poker, Go Fish or 52 Pickup. It's finite in size and scope (well, theoretically) and all the same cards are available to all the players in a given game, so it's not a CCG.

As far as I'm concerned, Dominion, Space Racists (R4tG, that is), Bohnanza, Dixit, and so on are all board games that happen not to have boards.

... Hm, or maybe I just have a loose definition. After all, Lost Cities is nothing but 5 suit rummy, and I still consider that a board game

Dominion FTW! A close second is Puerto Rico. I imagine people reading a lot of these comments are like "We, the Hitchhikers? I've never even heard of these games...".

Go to any gaming/hobby store and they'll more than likely have at least one of these types of games. A good one to start with is Settlers of Catan or maybe Ticket to Ride. Work up to things like Traders of Genoa (or, it's just called Traders now I believe) and eventually work on Puerto Rico and Agricola. You won't be disappointed, I promise.

"So say we all."
