WiMAX is worthless.

Where's a nice 14" i5 for under $500?

Can someone explain the Wimax to me? Do I have to pay a cell co for the service? Are there home wimax routers?

Found it on Amazon, but it is not available. Some 5 star reviews though.

ASUS is good, and this looks pretty nifty for a cheap laptop. I could never buy a refurb, though. The 90 warranty could turn this thing from a cheap laptop into a rental.

This seems like a good deal.

Yes, you will need a subscription with Clear or Sprint to get WiMAX (4G) service.

I still don't understand how 'High Definition' translates into 'the same 1366 x 768 laptop screen you've already seen on every other laptop ever made'. But I digress.

Looks like a good deal. $500 + $14.30 shipping on Newegg. The Newegg price comes with a free router that Newegg sells for $20. Google seems to suggest that Newegg sells it for as low as $424 - which is still higher than this.

Here's the Windows 7 Driver Recovery CD Restore Disk for this exact laptop. (You never know what will happen to a windows machine, although Asus is a very reliable brand.)

It's on CNET, but no reviews

Here's an in-depth overview of this laptop.

Weird, on amazon, it says that it is 12 pounds. Isn't that a bit heavy for a laptop?

When will Intel get it right and STOP IT with those lack luster Intel GMA graphics adapters... Every time I see it, I shun away in horror!

Amazon gives their shipping weight, which only tells you the maximum weight it will ship at. I've seen ridiculous estimates before (like 3 pounds for a SD memory card).

Ahh, that makes sense! That means that they are factoring in the charging cable too. I would guess that the laptop itself is around 5 pounds then.

By Hi Def they mean the laptop itself. The edges are very defined. This is not one of those laptops with fuzzy, indistinct edges on the plastic case so it looks like you're typing on a cloud in your lap.

Hey a Non-HP!

This one has an i3-370m which scores a very nice 2219 on Passmark. This is more than capable for your basic computer tasks and will even handle basic video editing, photoshop, and decompress rars, zips, etc. quickly enough.

The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD is not near as good. You will not be doing much 3D gaming on this. Here are some benchmarks for the graphics chip which includes expected FPS on some games. Even at low settings, you are getting sub 30fps on most modern FPS type games. Games like World of Warcraft will play fine at lower settings.

The 500gb hard drive is 5400, but remember that modern 500gb+ 2.5" 5400RPM drives are not like the older 5400 120, 250gb drives you may want to compare them to, they are much faster due to many factors such as cache, platter size, etc.

The WiMax is a plus if you elect to subscribe to a service.

Only two reviews at Amazon, but both positive.

Asus is a great brand these days, my favorite bang for the buck brand. As long as you don't intend to play many FPS type games on it, this is a great little laptop, at a decent price. It's kind of stuck in the middle of true budget laptop and mid-range.

Well the pixels are highly defined at 15.6" diagonally. You can see each one.

Something went terribly wrong when 16:9 became fashionable. Laptops today are lower resolution than their equivalents when 4:3 was the norm, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. Soon our cell phones will be higher resolution than laptops, even though they are 1/4 the physical size.

Technically 720p and WXGA are high definition. I'm pretty sure you could output HDMI to 1080p device on this as well.

Makes me wish I didn't buy that Packard Bell 386 off Craigslist last week. The guy that sold it to me said it was a super-fast PC. Anyone know where I can get those 5.25" disks for it.

Does anyone know the difference between refurbished and recertified? On Newegg, they have it listed as recertified.

Are they the same or are recirtified just the models that Asus uses to test "to ensure compliance with original manufacturer specifications" as it says on the Newegg website.

While that is in the same series, its not the same one.

Asus generally gets positive reviews however.

I've been nothing but happy with my Asus laptop, and it's over two years old. Recently, three of my friends asked me what laptop to buy, and I directed them to Asus, and they couldn't be happier as well.

They know how to churn out a quality product, and this one looks great for the price point. With a laptop, anything more than 15.6" starts to get a little big and heavy, this is right around the sweet spot.

How does this compare with the Samsung that was up during the Woot Off? They are the same price and appear to have the same specs. Samsung looks a little sexier.

Why does every new 15" laptop have 1366x768 resolution? My 5 year old 10" laptop has nearly the same resolution, and the 3.5" display on my phone has only about 250 pixels less in each direction.

Is it really that much more expensive to slap a 1600x900 display in a laptop? I doubt my eyes can really take advantage of 1920x1200 in a 15" laptop display, but 1600x900 doesn't seem unreasonable.
