Every week I find a song to perfectly represent a state in the union. The project moves alphabetically, and to be eligible a song has to meet the following criteria:

  • The name of the song must include the name of the state.
  • The song must be dedicated to or describe the entire state, not just the most famous city or feature.
  • The song has to make you feel like you're there, in that state. If you've been there before, it should remind you of that place.

And so far, so good. We've stormed through the As and Cs with relative ease, but this week it's different. This week it's Delaware.

The state: Delaware
The song: "I'm From Delaware" by Todd Chappelle

You'd think, being the first state and therefore the oldest, Delaware would have way more songs written about it. Or at least SOME. But boy, is it hard to find a song about Delaware. Sure, there are options, but none of them really struck me as particularly Delaware-ish, so I went with the local boy. Yes, it's basically a parody song of the old Hank Snow tune, which was actually a re-write the Geoff Mack ode to Australia made popular by Lucky Starr. But if you want Delaware references, you can't go wrong.

So the tune is pretty classic, and the chorus is catchy. Then you get to the verses and it seems like the sort of thing you'd read in a tourism brochure some friendly old local lady made on her home computer. I'm sure they have their own bustling metropolises and all, but the idea of traffic in Delaware seems kind of quaint and adorable.

you are here
They're apparently REALLY into this.

Okay, so I have to confess I've never been to Delaware, but this song makes me feel like I could at least drive through it on the way to somewhere else, or maybe on a whirlwind tour to see all the blue hens and chunked pumpkins and...uh, whatever else the state has to offer. You guys DO have something else to offer, right?

Delaware, I feel like I owe you an apology, but I can only take so much of the blame. You guys need to start inspiring some songwriters out there, stat.

Have you got a better Delaware song? Want to suggest one for next week's piece on Florida? Ever chunked a pumpkin? Let me know in the comments below?

Runner up: "Delaware" by Clive
Most Laughable Suggestion: "Delaware" by Perry Como

Don't forget the "What did Delaware?" song (http://www.kididdles.com/lyrics/w007.html). You can resurrect this for (Her brand) New Jersey, (What did) Ioway, WashingTON, etc...

No metropolises in DE. The largest city is Wilmington which DOES have some traffic problems (but nothing like rush hour in Manhattan or L.A.).

One of the best things in DE got a brief shoutout in the song. Dogfish Head Brewery in Rehoboth makes some of the best IPA in the country.

I've been to Delaware once to visit some friends that moved there. It was nice, but housing is very expensive.

Fun fact: There is no Sales Tax in Delaware, so the prices you see in stores are actually the prices you pay! It's crazy!

They have had some of the best pro-corporate laws in the country, so there are several Delaware corporations that don't actually HQ there, but are incorporated under Delaware law.

Yes, I'm from Delaware! Its a lovely state and we get excited every time we hear the mention of the name. It's gotten more publicity in the recent times due to the VP being from here and all but its a nice spot. We're close to Philly, Nyc, Baltimore and DC.

Fun fact: There are more chickens than people in Delaware! We are 30 miles at our widest and 90 miles at our longest.

My old High School (Delcastle) had their hands in the punkin chunkin, in 98 we were the first ones to use a pneumatic cannon to launch the wonderful orange ammo as opposed to using something like a catapult or a trebuchet.

Tax free shopping is a great draw for everyone. During the holidays you will find people from all states coming to the Christiana mall or the Concord mall to shop and saveeeeee!

I love it here

Also checking in from Delaware. What little most people outside of the immediate area know about Delaware is from their 20 minute drive on I-95 from New York City to Washington, D.C., including the most onerous toll rate on the east coast ($5 for 15 miles of interstate). Which is too bad, because for a small state there is quite a diverse number of things to do and enjoy here.

Sadly, there just haven't been any good songs featuring Delaware. The only other song I could suggest is another humorous song filled with local in-jokes, "Delawhere?". Unfortunately, I couldn't find it on iTunes or YouTube.

The lack of a Delaware song is a little surprising, considering that blues/rocker George Thorogood is from Delaware and even named his band after his home state.

I graduated from the University of Delaware in Newark (pronounced "New-ark"). Do NOT pronounce it the same as the city in Jersey! Fun fact: southern delaware is referred to as "slower-lower". Shout out to the Deer Park Tavern, Triangle Liquors, and Cleveland Avenue Sub Shop.

Another Delawarian checking in...now that's all of us. Some other useless factoids:
-DE sent troops to both sides in the Civil War.
-Slavery was never outlawed by DE...as a "northern" state Lincoln's emancipation proclamation didn't apply. Federal law finally outlawed slavery for everyone...DE included
-DE was the first state to ratify the constitution...thus the "First State" tag you see everywhere
-DE is the 2nd smallest (by area) of the 50 states (RI is the smallest). The whole state wouldn't make a good sized county in many Midwest and western states.
-DE has 2 senators and 1 congresscritter.
-There are less than 1 million Delawareans. Far fewer than many cities!
-DE is the only state without a National (Park | Recreation Area | Historic Site | etc)
-DE is a haven for many corporations including most of the fortune 500 and especially bank heavy. DE corporate law requires them to have a DE address of some kind...a rented mailbox works just fine! Of the thousands of corporations incorporated here, only a handful even have offices here

Hope you enjoyed these Delaware tidbits. And remember that when people ask you "Delawhere?" You can answer with confidence "isn't that a suburb of Philadelphia?"
