seems like everyone usually has a lot of fun with these... might pick some up for the office.

Ah, this brings me back to the joys (*cough* dread and anguish) of high school chemistry. Loves playing with Buckyballs though, so I definitely recommend.

So what's been the consensus, the color usually rubs off?

I have six sets from a previous woot, plus one set from a Big o' Cosmos. As tempting as another three sets is (plus the book!), my fiance' would not approve this expenditure.

Damn it Woot... Gold/Silver/Black/Green all adorn my cube, how did you know I'd feel compelled to collect the new colors? And for that matter, why'd you have to jam all of 'em into one set, instead of letting me mix-and-match (don't really need another set of silver, but I guess I'm gettin' 'em anyway!)?!?

I have the black and the gold, and the colors do not just rub off. I don't know how these are painted but I expect them to be colored in the same way as mine.

The "regular" Buckyball packs usually contain 216 pieces. This one is equivalent to 2 of those packs, not 3, so take that into account when doing your price comparison.

I have one. They're strangely addictive.

Well, at least it should arrive in time for the 4th of July.

This is a really good price...a single set directly from zoomdoggle starts at 34.95 and goes up from there.

I find the color does wear off quickly but they are tons of fun and still really cool. Great for the office.

The green ones I got a while back had the color flake off a bit, if I played with them more often the green would probably be almost completely gone. So tempting to buy these however.

Anyone have a good idea how many of these it would take stuck to the bottom of a motorcycle so it will trip the induction sensors at stoplights?

I've heard rare earth magnets are strong enough, but they're not easy to shop for. Maybe if you spread some all around the bottom of the frame?

Can you make the US Flag with these?

The verdict appears to be mixed on the Buckyball colors rubbing off. Apparently they do quickly on the cheaper ones, but it takes a while (if at all) on the Buckyballs.

Will bucky stick to the fridge door?

I really don't get the appeal of these things.

I'm not sure if magnets would actually do that, but there are much less expensive way to get magnets for this. Google for "NdFeB" under shopping - I'm guessing it would be a breach of etiquette to post other shopping links here.

The cube of 5x5x5 has 125. Subtracting from 144 total, that leaves 19 buckyballs. Where did they hide the other 19? And are those 19 in a standardized pattern?

They are round. What do round things do?

a single regular 6x6x6 pack of these in a retail store will run you 30 bucks, 3 of these 5x5x5 sets is a good deal+ they are red/white/blue which makes them an even better deal.
But the picture shows 5x5x5 cubes.. thats 125-- but there are some lying to the side so looks like you can make a 5x5x5 cube and have 19 extras of each color... extras are usually expensive and hard to come by for all of us who go crazy if we cant make a perfect cube

Both sets of my green ones have chipped/rubbed off the coating on about half the balls. Didn't take much. But maybe not surprisingly, they still function as magnets!

In other news, what's up with 144 piece sets? Usually they 6x6x6 or 216... what's up with 5x5x5 with 19 leftover?

WHY?

A normal set contains 216 balls... These are only 144 per set... So you are only getting a little mor than 2 sets and not a full 3 sets

They have 19 extra included in the 5x5x5 set because then you end up with 432 total in all 3 boxes. When you buy a 2 pack of 6x6x6 cubes you also get 432. It's cool that you can get 3 different colors here instead of just 2 and still get the same number of magnets as the other woots (for the same price as other woots too).

I will find it hard to cope with the fact I have 19 that don't go into the cube. It will bother me that I won't be able to get them all into a single cube. those 19 extra might actually drive me insane. But I am willing to risk it.

I can not complete my massive cube if these are 5x5x5, rediculous.

consensus is that color rubs off, and if it doesn't then you can definitely notice the weakness in the magnet.

i also just noticed that this is not the 'usual' 216 Piece set. :|
