They also have a very real disconnect with technology. Not their fault most people do, but they set the standards and they don't understand the language. It's not an efficient system at all, and since experts are not valued by society, there is no one to call to help them through it. (not exactly accurate, there are lots of want to be experts and lots of people who know lots of stuff, and even people who would be qualified to answer the questions, but it's either, not worth their time, not financially reasonable to listen to them - ie their advice is too expensive, and there just isn't the necessary concern since as I said before most of the populous although many use computers, does not understand them or the terminology associated, oh and the other group has it's own political agenda that may or may not eliminate their expertise from consideration, or something).

Not looking for an argument, just my two-cents on the subject.

Trying to follow doctor's orders, but already starting to drag today.

Not going to be around much this weekend most like.

That's about all I think.

They didn't have anything to do with our tech; they just dictated that moves would be made and when those moves had to occur.

Sometimes I don't think we have very good choices. Lately I've been voting for the lesser of evils.

Well, another day has passed and I didn't use algebra once.

Had to go to a visitation this evening (not fun) but then went to dinner where granddaughter #1 works and had her for a waitress. They weren't busy at that time so she got to chat a lot. That was fun.

Probably called different things in different parts of the county. The person who told me said "the laying out." Which sounds to me like someone was punched.

The deceased's hobby was magic and he had a magic wand in his hands. The widow, who has a good sense of humor and who I sincerely hope was kidding, said there was going to be a magic show at 6. I was this close [] to saying, "will they make him rise," before my brain kicked in and kept my mouth shut.

Never heard of that one - but that one actually conjures visions of laying someone down which of course is what it is. I think Wake is a Catholic term (?), but it was used to mean calling or visiting hours.

that woulda been a big oops!

(but I gotta admit I am chuckling over the thought of it!)

Always referred to it as 'visitation' where I grew up. In this part of the country everything is referred to as a 'wake'. When I use the term 'visitation' everyone looks at me like I have three heads. Whenever I hear the term 'wake' all I can think of is a good ol' Irish wake!

I have heard the term 'laid out'....am thinking it was mostly by the grandmother-in-law who originally hailed from West Virginny.

I think visitation has evolved to what is now commonly called the viewing.

The newspaper says "friends may visit," which makes it sound like you're going to pull up a chair and chat for a while.

The deceased is laid out in preparation for the viewing, The viewing pays last respects to the deceased. The visitation pays respect to the family (which can occur in conjunction with the viewing).
