Swype virtual keyboard works well. In a school kid, draw with your fingers kind of way. Its free.

Do you need a Verizon Account to use this? I apologize in advance if that is a dumb question. Just wondering cause I really want a tablet.

Hi. Almost all android apps are written in java.

Wholesaleforless wrote:Is there an app out there that lets you run Java applications on this (or any Android) unit?

I have heard conflicting information (but most of it says no).

Don't seem to be too many options out there if you want a tablet capable of running Java.

If you were lucky enough to buy one of the Hava boxes on woot that broadcast your TV over the net.....It works on the Xoom with the Hava App named Vulkano.

Motorola does sell a keyboard that you can pair with the XOOM which is very nice for the $50 price tag. You can also hook up other keyboards as well (although I am not sure which ones). So I am sure that you will find an option that will work for you.

I use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse with mine. very nice when hooked up to a monitor or my tv, also nice to use with quick office hd when you want to take notes and want a device that has a battery life of 8+ hours

You should try using TeamViewer on your Android or iOS device and then just remote into a Windows computer, you can completely control your computer, works just like remote desktop. It is free for personal use.

How does the Xoom charge? Is it USB or a special charger?

You can charge via USB, but it is faster to charge with the dedicated charger (included with the xoom).

It's a proprietary charger... it looks like a little needle. It's really easy to break, but Motorola sells a dock for $50 that helps out a lot in charging and keeping everything intact.

Also, to the people wondering about keyboards, etc, Bluetooth keyboards are the way to go. The Xoom doesn't currently support USB keyboards, but the Bluetooth keyboard I have works PERFECTLY. There are a myriad of tablet-compatible keyboards, some for around $30.

It has a nice clip that allows you to attach it to any headphone jack. I have one for my Ipad2 and it's by far the best method of keeping it around. I've used 2 other styluses; its the same material, just having it around all the time is a bonus.

I have been a huge fan of the alupen since I got it. If you are fortunate enough to have a shop with both styluses I recommend you try them and see which is best. I use mine daily on my ipad to take class notes using penultimate. I never have hand cramps and despite the larger tip, I feel like I have good control of where I am writing.

I have a xoom wifi and love it. Hate Motorola for not keeping users informed about the SD card update but that is now rolling out with Android 3.2 so should be no problem. The xoom always gets the new versions of Android first.

I have an app called playon that allows me to run netflix on the unit. Kindle and Nook apps work great as does Hulu Plus.

GPS works great.

A friend who owns an ipad2 could only claim the ipad had more apps but could not find anything I couldn't get through Android market and was deflated to discover a lot of the apps he paid for had free equivalents on android.

I have the dock with speakers, the sound from it is amazing.

At this price you'd be crazy not to go for it.

You can't charge with USB. It's not supported at all... Plug in your USB adapter and a dialogue will pop up saying "USB Charging Not Supported"

Everyone should probably check out another fantastic woot sold tablet, the Viewsonic Gtablet.

It's the same processor, 16gb with 512mb ram (half that of the Xoom but the same as the
Ipad 2) and all for 259 on amazon, sold by woot!

I want something I can carry with me everywhere, in my purse. 3 lbs can feel heavy real fast.

I'm gonna go try one at Best Buy tonight to see how it can handle my epic typing speed. That's the deal-breaker for me.

Check out the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 if the store you go to has it. Ipad2 light and thinner I believe. I have the Xoom and you will fell the weight if you take it everywhere. The Samsung 10.1 has most of the same internals that the Xoom does, just less ports on the outside, and is a little cheaper feeling at the sake of weight. Love my Xoom though, Honeycomb OS is amazing. Just buy the device that you prefer most. Most features doesn't always mean it's right for you.

It also works great if you have a sling device. Dish Network also has a good app.
I couldn't get my Hava titanium to work with the Vulkano app, maybe they've updated it, but last I knew they were trying to get you to buy the new Vulkano box.

USB Keyboard/Mouse work fine, just plugged my Logitech TrackBall into it and had it work without any changes... (with the screen locked even) using the USB connector for cameras.. Android 3.1 made the Xoom a USB Host device, so it can use 99.9% of keyboards/mice etc..

I just pulled the trigger! I saw this post this morning and said if it's still there later in the day I'll get it. I hope I am not disappointed. I read the reviews since it came out and it seems that it's either the Xoom or the iPad. I was going to go iPad but since I have an android phone and love it, I thought I'd try out the Xoom.

This isn't true. First, the Staples coupon was "in store only" (unless you found a coupon different than the one I saw), and the price in stores is actually $100 more ($599) than the special price that is on the Internet. So, to use the coupon, you have to go in the store, and you actually wind up paying $550 rather than getting it for $499 from the Internet.

But in neither case can you get it for $449.

This is kind of funny, considering the comparable (32GB model) actually costs MORE than the Xoom.

but this is a great price for the xoom! i would pick one up if i didn't already have one. the tablet works nicely, has gps, and hasn't given me any problems other than the networking issue. it does weigh a little more than the transformer and the ipads, though.

I'm not a techie, but I enjoy using user-friendly items. My son is a Mac Fanboy, and has an Ipad1 as well as an Android phone thru Sprint.

I had been looking at the Asus Transformer, but the price point on this Xoom is very favorable since I'm an old fart who is retired. (IBM)

I need some opinions as to how difficult it will be so set up the Xoom to start initially. I have read where some have had some problems integrating their Xoom's onto their home networks. I wouldn't really want this problem but could probably work thru it.
I'm not worried about the amount of Apps that are available, as I will just use it for email, and Google docs for some occasional spreadsheets, etc.

Any comments/opinions are welcomed.

Does anyone know if there is the capability to connect the Xoom to a Tuner or some sort of device like that where you are able to stream TV through a tuner onto the Xoom?

BTW I just ordered my Xoom and I am super excited - hoping they ship fast!

Slingbox for Android, no clue if it works well on honeycomb but if it doesn't it will soon.

Edit: website says available on all Android mobile devices so that would be your best choice. Might be other more free methods but you can just research that.

If you have a computer with a tv tuner built in you can also use some type of remote desktop software and that'll stream tv to your tab.

I wonder if you could set-up VNC on a roku box...
