The beater bar/brush stopped spinning. The people at the repair shop said it was a common occurrence. Dyson is pretty tough to get a hold of on the phone. But once you get through the people seem competent. The office I got a hold of was in Chicago, IL. Anyways, it's a good vacuum cleaner...when it works.

The brushes stop when the Dyson vac is in the upright position, there is a clutch in the drive system for the brush. But the clutch will run you $100 to $130 to replace (if you can find a shop that will do the work. I just had the clutch go out for the second time in a 2 year old dyson that I got on WOOT. I gave up and bought another brand.

That said, clogging really hasn't been a problem for me. Also, I've never had to have mine serviced, so I can't speak to that.

In addition they have very helpful people answering the phones at Dyson customer service with the same walk-throughs. Clogs very easy to remove.

I absolutely agree. I've got 3 Spitz (really hairy and sheddy dogs in Phoenix!), 1 chihuahua mix, 1 big cat. They shed enough that I must change my air handler filters monthly. There are constant--correction WERE constant hair ball tumble weeds rolling across my floor.

I've had this entire vacuum apart except for the engine compartment. All super easy with simple plastic screws that usually need opened to remove pieces.

So far, I've had no issues (except for my wife's hair getting caught in the beater bar, but that's not a problem unique to the Dyson and is easily fixed with scissors). The machine works as advertised and didn't show any signs of prior use. I've noticed it is a little more difficult to operate on a shorter pile carpet, but I blame that on the suction. Speaking of suction, I think mine is getting stuff out of the carpets that the previous owner's pets left behind! But the best part about getting a refurb? The cat is STILL playing with the box.

TL;DR Just as good as new, for a much better price.

My theory about the beater bar/hair thing is that the bar spins faster than the suction and the bristles on the bar are so good at lassoing those strands that even the awesome suction cannot overcome it.

personally I picked up a refurb dyson Woot had up a few years back. It came with a replacement belt and replacement air filter (in case you're cleaning one, since they are lifetime filters) I've gotten a few clogs out, replaced the belt because the original was getting a little loose after so much use. But it works just like new!

I'd highly recommend a Dyson...much less a WOOT DYSON!

I bought a refurbished dc25 in March. After a while the filter in the ball would pop off. I cleaned it and it still happened. Also my brush bar was wearing out on the ends. So far Dysons replaced those things and the vacuum is doing well. My worry is that I've already had these problems. I didn't buy the extended warranty. I'm worried.

Okay, a caveat -- one vacuum was destroyed when it turned on and a hapless mouse was in the beater bar. Yeah, nasty.

I can save you $200. Go to Costco and purchase the Shark Navigator. It's on sale this month for $100. It includes all the attachments plus and extension hose.

I purchased the Shark thru woot! as a reconditioned for $70 a few months ago and absolutely love it! It didn't come with all the extra attachments that the Costco model comes with.

I purchased the one from Costco for Mom. My sister and daughter just love it. Both of them want one now.

It never loses suction, is light weight and picks up more dirt and dog hair than you thought was in your house. This thing is a work horse! The pet attachment is incredible. It beats our Kirby, my daughter's new Kirby and every other vacuum I've ever used.

Dyson is way overpriced. Even thru woot. You are paying for a name. The Shark will give the same results.

Buy the Shark at Costco. If it doesn't perform exceptionally, return it. Woot will have Dyson again and again.

Don't EVER be fooled by using another vacuum to clean up AFTER you've (of course) vacuumed with your own.

You will ALWAYS get more up using another vacuum after having vacuumed! That's how the door-to-door people get you to spend a ridiculous amount of money on their product.

If you don't like dirt in your house, get rid of carpeting.

That said, we have a Kirby, which I bought off an auction site (don't EVER pay full price for a Kirby!), and a neighbor a Dyson. Each managed to pull up dirt off the other's carpet after the other had been thoroughly cleaned with their respective owner's vacuum.

For the record, the Kirby pulled up more dirt than the Dyson did, and the Kirby is about 8 years old. We made sure to wash the filters on the Dyson prior to the test.

Also, we have dogs and the neighbors do not.

Drinks are always fun to start this kind of poooonyic activity!

I stayed up. Again.

I own a cleaning company. I have two dyson vacuums that I have had for over 5 years. They are used everyday and are still running strong. I have no complaints about this vacuum whatsoever. It has yet to let me down. I started with 2 oreck vacuums which failed me after just 1 year. I would not buy another vacuum from now on. Hope this helps someone on the fence.

I'm a previous (unsatisfied) owner of a Dyson and now a happy owner of a Miele.

For all of those drooling over a Dyson: there are better -- or at least very comparable -- options if you're on a budget. If you're not on a tight budget, I'd strongly recommend the Miele.

If you're interested in reading a more detailed review and comparison from someone who has owned both, including video, check it:

Picked this up last time it was on woot for the same price. We vacuumed regularly prior to this vacuum with a Kenmore something or other bag vacuum. Well let me just say, the first week or so we used this, the bin filled up with so much dirt/hair/glitter/sand and whatever else the kids had brought in over the past year that we would have to empty it every time we vacuumed. Now that it's been a bit of regular use, the huge amounts of dirt have calmed down.. but obviously the old vacuum wasn't cutting it, at least compared to this beast.

Excellent vacuum.

to the navigator post. As I said I would like to try it but the only issue I have is the casing (plastic parts look cheap). I use my dyson's everyday and they look like they have been thru a war but nothing has broken. The 5 year warranty on the navigator warranty does me no good if the rest of the vacuum falls apart. Over the years I have pretty much figured out that you get what you pay for.

It's quite light and very easy to maneuver. Pretty quiet, too! Extremely easy to empty and a real pleasure to use.

It has a three way toggle switch- off, suction on, suction and beater bar. The beater bar will not engage until tip the handle back so you don't eat up your carpet.

Make sure when you attach the power head, after you take it out of the box, that you snap it in tight for a good connection. The cry babies that said the vacuum didn't work either didn't have the head snapped in correctly or hadn't tipped the handle and engaged the power head.

It eats up everything we've asked- dog food, newspaper and tons of dog hair. It has pulled up the nap in very old carpeting giving it a more youthful appearance. My house has never been so clean before!

Sorry, I hadn't realized you had this additional post. I beat the heck out of my Navigator. I'm in the country, so gobs of dirt. I raise dogs that play in the country, so huge gobs of dirt. I suck up everything.

I have no time to baby along any piece of equipment or appliance. So far it's been knocked over, tripped over and generally just beaten up. Nothing is broken yet. It doesn't have a plasticy feel to it so I don't think that cracking or chipping will become an issue unless, perhaps, I leave it sitting in the sun.

I've sucked up some pretty hard and over-sized pieces of misc. The beater bar jammed once but nothing broke and it was easy to clear the jamb.

I think you'll be happy with it. I'm happy and I don't get excited about things like vacuums.

Costco is really good about returns. So if after 5 or 10 years it breaks, take it back. While I never would take something back to them after that long of usage, they will take it back.

I love my Dyson! Same model - bought it on a previous Woot although I had concerns about the warranty too. I've had it 2 years now and had no problems with it. I love the way it cleans and the way it comes apart and fits back together reminds me of Lego. Really well engineered for something made mostly of plastic. I had to call Dyson once or twice and they are very good with customer service. They stand behind their products even if it's a refurb. And this is not that much more expensive than any other vacuums, and they don't offer a 5 year warranty either.

As for carpet manufacturers voiding the warranty, I can verify that the Dyson pulled up about half of the carpet fibers from a new, cheap carpet installed in a house we bought. I had the level set on low and didn't realize it and I was pulling up bin after bin of carpet fiber. A LOT more than should have been loose. Eventually it stopped before the carpet was bare...But these things really do have a lot of power, so be careful. They are not constructed differently than any other vacuum (beater bar) but they are very intense.

I don't like it for cleaning stairs - the hose is difficult to extend and fairly awkward. Other than that - 5 out of 5 stars.

I want. But I ditto all the concerns made about the warranty. This is a lot of money for me and I worry that the warranty is so short.
Has anyone had a problem - and how has it been trying to fix it.
