While not fatal to the vacuum, you will have to cut hair off of the beater bar on occasion. It's easy to remove the cover and even has a handy slot to slide a pair of scissors along. My wife has very long hair and we have a few cats, and our DC14 animal has survived 6 years with tumbles down the stairs and worse unscathed.

I've had a Dyson for over five years. I've got two German Shepherds and two cats - so there is a lot of fur to be found in my house.

I'd LOVE to buy this new Dyson but honestly, the old one still works like a champ and I can't justify it.

I replaced a solid Kirby with the Dyson just because I couldn't afford two bags a week. If you've got a lot of animal hair, just not buying the bags will save you a small fortune in the first year.

Aw, I can dream, can't I? Even if I could find one, I'd never vacuum a cat. We did have one kitty who wouldn't move when I'd vacuum, she'd hold her ground and smack the machine with that rapid fire cat smack. Funniest thing...

We've only got carpeting in one room and that door stays closed. But for the rest of the house, I use a Hoover linx on a daily basis (had to buy an extra battery, a charge only lasts fifteen minutes and I got tired of running through the house...that REALLY scared the cats) and every couple of weeks I get the big boy out and vacuum the cat furniture as well as the floors.

I just thought the name of this Dyson was funny. An "animal vacuum".

If you want an attachment for your dog, they sell a tool called the Dyson Groom.

I bought this same vacuum here when it was offered about a month ago. It is the BEST vacuum I have ever owned.

I previously had a Hoover Windtunnel that I bought two years ago. It was the highest rated on consumer reports for its low price tag (~$130). However, after about a year, the Hoover started emitting burning smells and a light smoke. I took the vac apart, cleaned it thoroughly and removed all clogged hairs from the brush, still kept smoking. It still worked, but the burning smell/smoke was intolerable. So I bought this Dyson to replace it.

I've got two cats that pretty much live in one of the rooms in my house. For giggles, I used the Hoover one last time to vacuum the room completely. I then used my new Dyson DC28 Animal refurb from Woot. The Dyson container filled up COMPLETELY with cat hairs, loose carpet fibers, and kitty litter that must have been too difficult for the Hoover to collect. This Dyson works 500% better.

I should also note that this thing has a hardwood floor setting and it works pretty well. My old vacuum couldn't handle hardwood floors, and sometimes would launch cat hairs in opposite directions rather than suck them in. But the Dyson does a good job at sucking in loose debris and cat hair in close proximity.

Yes the Dyson is expensive. But as my fiance keeps telling me, you get what you pay for. I'm used to having things go bad after a couple years. But I am confident that with the Dyson, I won't have to buy a new vacuum for a really long time.

That happened to us too, my husband and I have been talking about buying a Dyson vacuum this past week. We're not real excited about the warranty but for the price I think we will get our money's worth.

love2cruise wrote:Sooooo excited! Thank you Woot! I've been researching and looking for vacuums, especially Dysons, all week long! This is an Animal, too!

Question: Squaretrade warranty on this is $45 for a year, is it worth it when it only covers for 6 more months than the included Dyson warranty? I've always wanted a Dyson, but lets be real - there are reports they can clog and any vacuum that deals with all the hair in my house usually doesn't last long. How do I know if there's a local technician? With large items, this seems more complicated.

This is from the Squaretrade warranty:
"If your item is refurbished and has a US manufacturer's warranty of at least 90 days ("MSP"), this Service Agreement begins upon expiration of manufacturer warranty and lasts for the number of years of coverage you specify at purchase time."

So I'm taking this to mean you would actually be covered for 1.5 yrs. Does anyone else know differently?

unksol wrote:In My Experience
Refurbished typically means:

A: Someone bought it and returned it. (Didn't like it etc)

B: The item was not working from the factory and was returned for a replacement. (They don't test every item thoroughly, just random samples to make sure they are meeting their quality standards)

C: Someone bought it and it failed under warranty. Most products fail at beginning(due to defects) and end of life. So it either wasn't used long, or probably wasn't worth refurbishing. A lot of companies return the repaired item to the person making the claim anyway.

In any case a refurb HAS to be inspected, tested and then fixed if there's a problem before they can resell it. So you basically get a new/like new item that should be working and has had a more thorough inspection than a new item, at a lower price with a lower warranty term.

Every time I have bought a refurb it has shown up looking brand new in the box and I've never had a problem with one. My 47-inch tv is a woot refurb. I know I might get one with a scratch or a scuff eventually, or one that randomly fails a year in, but the money I'm saving on all of them will probably replace that one failure.

I can't speak to Dyson reliablilty but wooters seem happy. SquareTrade extended warranties can also be purchased up to 30 days after purchase of an item. There's a link to the squaretrade warranty in the item description. I hear they have great service, but again no personal experience and the price seems a little high on this one.

Thank you very much for the info. I did read what a re-furb. item could be.. still a bit unnerving.. Thank you for taking the time in replying!! I did ponder on getting the extended warranty.. maybe I'll wait until it arrives and make the decision then.. Thanks again..K.

I have the "ball" version of this vacuum. I have 2 chihuahuas and 3 birds. This thing makes easy work of picking up the endless amounts of dog hair and bird seed. We recently installed hardwood floors and it still works awesome. I love it, and there is no way I would ever get rid of it!

We have one of these exact models out in Afghanistan. Bought it brand new about 6 months ago for about $600 and had it shipped by a family member. A small belt (a $2 item they won't sell us because it is part of a bigger piece but all we need is the belt) broke in the roller assembly and Dyson wants us to pay $200 for a new cleaner head assembly and computer board. Plus, they won't ship to an APO so they are telling us we have to ship to a relative and then have them ship it out to us. Dealing with Dyson customer service has been the worst experience for us and we are stuck out here 7000+ miles away from the nearest authorized Dyson dealer. If I could we would ship this hunk of junk back to where we bought it and tell Dyson to go F_...... themselves if you get the drift....

Before you spend $300 on this, I highly recommend you read Consumer Reports' rankings of vacuums. There are several vacuums costing 1/3 the price that Consumer Reports ranks higher than this Dyson. I bought one of the cheaper models they recommended and am extremely happy with it.

Dyson vacuums are relatively good vacuums, but you are paying a huge premium for the Dyson name... even with this Woot! deal.

We have this vaccuum and I have long hair. I have had to cut the hair out of the beater bar (which you would do with any vaccuum and long hair). It seems to work better when the long hair is removed from the bar, but I haven't had it break down in 7 years even with the long hair.

DaZoneRanger wrote:This model is more powerful and more effective than the DC25 Ball model, according to tests done by one of the magazines I read. Could have been consumer reports or Pop Sci.

My only, but fatal, complaint with the DC25 was the floor/wand suction re-direct mechanism. To close the airflow off from the floor / beater, one clicks the handle/wand/spine into the upright and locked position. A little plastic rudder-type bit slides into place and blocks the airflow to the floor. I think it was unlocking to the reclined position, while turning, which snapped that little bit of plastic off. From then on the machine would not turn right w/o falling apart, and would not rechannel airflow from floor to wand. The repair quote was ~$85 + several weeks of downtime. I survived on duct tape for a time, then put the machine to rest.
I just may try again.

I didn't check the packaging for claw marks or blood, just backed away slowly then ran.

I have LONG hair. And a cat. And I often dog-sit for my neighbors (in my home). I've been running this vacuum twice a week for the last year, and I think I've had about five human hairs stuck (but not stuck-stuck) in the roller. This vacuum is by far the best vacuum I've ever, ever used. I check the roller for threads and hair when I clean the filters (about every three months).
