Now that Netflix has raised it's price by 60%, what exactly is the point of buying this thing? Maybe Amazon will step into the void, but it hasn't yet. Other than those two, there's nothing on Roku worth owning it for.

Too bad -- I'm giving up Netflix streaming and going back to disc-only. They ain't got enough content for the $7.99 a month... and Roku ain't got enough content without Netflix.

Does this only work with Netflix and Amazon or can you stream movies/tv shows from other places too?

So, for $20 bucks more I can get a NEW Roku 2. Why bother?

Is there any point in buying this if you don't pay for subscriptions with Hulu, Netflix or Amazon? I mean, if you are so cheap (broke) you want nothing but free content, does this offer anything at all besides a nifty way to collect dust?

And its $59 with free shipping for comparable model. So....you're saving $14 to get last year's model.

I bought two of these on a previous woot. One of them works great, but the other one has issues with the IR sensor for the remote. As crazy as this sounds, the effective distance of the remote reduces as the box warms up, to the point that you have to be within about 12 inches from the front for it to work. The box was under my plasma tv and so I thought perhaps the sensor was being swamped with IR from the tv, but the problem didn't go away after moving the box.

So anyway, I do love my roku box, even when i have to get a little close to use it. Simple and effective access to streaming content.

We have Three Roku Boxes at my house I have 2 and my roommates have one. This one looks like an older model to me but worth it if you're looking for a lower priced entry in to Rokudom Fun fact you can control them over wifi with an android phone. My roommates still don't know that the reason their Roku sometimes pauses without reason is because of me!

I got one for my dad and he loves it. I might pick one up just because his Roku streams Netflix so much better than my TiVo series 3. FYI - there are also roku "secret channels". Enter a code and stream things like CNN and BBC for free.

PS - Someone has created a Woot channel!

A month ago I would have bought this, but now I might not be keeping Netflix due to that PONYPONYPONY move.

I bought one of these 2 years ago when Netflix was the only thing you could get on it. I love it to death. Thinking of upgrading to one of the newer units, but would definitely keep the old one around. It has never failed me, and the selection of channels is pretty good too.

Why mess with these when the new ones can play ANGRY BIRDS!!!!

if you're into that sort of thing, of course.

Besides, the new ones aren't a whole lot more money.

Hrm... does this support DLNA? I finally have a decent media server running on Kubuntu with TVMobili and it works great with my Samsung TV and my WDTV Live through the DLNA media server stuff.

I'm a bit doubtful on streaming with "g" wireless... my WDTV Live works well enough with an "n" dongle streaming 1080p content (into my 720p TV).

I'd be interested... I'd like to move the WDTV Live elsewhere in my house, but it's got to handle streaming the content as-is.

Generally, one can add channels to stream video and audio content from other providers. Some are officially listed in the Roku store on the device. Some are free, others require payment. Other channels are not officially listed, but can be added without too much fuss.

One thing I wonder about. The current Roku devices allow for Hulu Plus, but there was a rumor that older Roku devices worked with the free version of Hulu. True or false?

You can stream other things too. The first that comes to mind is hulu plus (it may also work with regular hulu, though I'm not certain).

My roommate owns one of these, and it's come in handy for perusing his dad's Netflix account but I have to say the remote can be really annoying. Sometimes I have to press the same button a dozen times before it will register (even standing directly in front of it, 6 inches away).

I think this would actually be advantageous over the new Roku 2 models IF you have a TV that does not have HDMI but DOES have Component video inputs, since the Roku 2 doesn't have component, only HDMI and composite (crappy single yellow connector)

I ain't signing anything! What? It's not that kind of signature? Oh. So that's what it is? Oh. I'm still not interested.

I own one and there is a lot more than Netflix and Amazon (although that is my main use).

News and music up the yingyang, tv, games, more being added regularly and you can stream your own stuff to it.

Highly recommend. I may get an extra one for the guest room, since there is no satellite in there.

This is Roku 1, offered for half what Roku sells Roku 2 for. Probably better to buy the Roku 2. Roku 2 @ 1080p is $100.

(Overall signature size was getting large. Recommended signature size is 5k.)

Because it's still a lot cheaper than buying the Miami Vice DVDs you'll only watch once... It's also cheaper than the gas to get you to the RedBox and back (which contains enough variety to keep you satisfied for a whole week).

You can play Hulu, Pandora, Weather Updates, Lot of add on channels that can go with the Ruku. Its not just for Netflix.

make sure ALL of your tv settings that use any kind of dynamic contrast are turned off.. each tv manufacter calls it something different, new samsungs, its called eco sensor or something like that, some its 'dynamic contrast'... the light sensor on the tv blocks IR remote signals.. have seen it 100 times..

I love my Roku and was thinking of getting another for my bedroom. At this price, I'll get 2! As I understand it, only the home delivery Netflix is going up in price, the streaming will stay the same price. Kidlet is a great channel and it's free to stream on Roku.

There's free content (see channel listings), but not much of it is mainstream entertainment.

I went stream-only for Netflix and between that and Hulu Plus, I think it will cover most stuff I'd wanna watch... besides, streaming 1080p over the Internet will require some serious connection speed. >.<

Besides, my PS3 eats up way more power than Roku HD would (5W! vs 140+W) which would be awesome for electricity savings!

Product support site (this Roku is an older model--they're featuring Roku 2):

http://support.roku.com/categories/20009787-roku

The moderator was pointing out the woncoolone link was for the model 1101 woot, but I think regardless, it looks like whether it's the 1100 (which I linked above in a previous woot), the 1101, or 1000 (also on sale today), it looks like this is the support site for all three models.

For those interested in local streaming (in other words watching videos from a PC in your home)...this is not the box for that. It can do it, sort of, but you have to install software on the PC, and they have to be in a specific format. It's not worth it. Go find a WD Live box if that's what you want.

For stuff like Netflix, though, this can't be beat. That's one hell of a price, too.

Too lazy to keep updating my sig.

Well, this model has an ethernet jack, TOSLINK, component video, and s-video. The $59 Roku2 doesn't. In fact, component, s-video and TOSLINK appear in none of the new Roku models.

Netflix instant streaming is awesome. Works well on 1.2 mbps internet service... YES, the cheapest basic cable internet service my area provides and Netflix works perfectly on it. No need for Cable TV; bunny ears, cheap basic internet cable, and netflix = great TV. :-) Quit your whining people. Netflix is just trying to get more people to switch to instant. They want to phase out DVDs and go entirely instant, but they couldn't do that without changing the cost of the DVD portion. The instant portion is CHEAP and will remain that way for the time being. The cost for netflix will drop when people stop wanting the DVDs and agree to use the instant.

Do they support DLNA streaming or streaming files from a window share / samba share?
