Where's the dot/dash button? How can you sell a remote with out one. Can the input key be reprogrammed to be a dash key? If not it's a deal breaker for me.

That's interesting. I manage a number of projectors and a HUGE one in our boardroom, and we have been told by our vendors that it's the number of HOURS the bulb is on, not the cycles.

I had thought about getting one of these to replace my Sony RM-AX1400, but not if it can't remember what's on or off. My RM-AX1400 is definitely not user-friendly to program, but once it's programmed it knows what's needed and what isn't and powers on/off appropriately during macros.

Couldn't you just do this with a activity macro? Lake if I have a activity micro to watch Satellite TV I can set it up to turn on;

TV, Sat receiver, Surround receiver, etc...

If I want to watch DVD activity;

Turn off Sat receiver,
Turn ON DVD player

All I actually care about is getting something that will mute the TV without turning it off. I've checked the product user manual online and it has no list of device brands that it can control.

If can get your hands on the original remote, then use the learning command to copy the signal over.

Otherwise, try Samsung codes.

Gee, I wonder what the DASH under the "Enter" button means.

ENTER/— operates channel enter and 10+ digit entry. For digital TV channels, this key also separates the main channel from the subchannel. For example, to choose the channel 59.1, press “5”, “9”, ENTER/–, and “1”.

Does anyone know if this will work with the latest Dish satellite hardware? My sister could not figure out how to negotiate with DirecTV to get basic+ and HBO for less than $90 a month. Dish came in at substantially less but the hardware is funky and my computer systems engineer sister is always accusing the Yamaha AV control center I gave her as a gift as the culprit. Because the lights blink when the HDMI signal stutters. What can I say? Anyway, she won't program any of the remotes to even get rid of one of them. They all sit in a row on her coffee table and she goes all obsessive-compulsive if anyone moves them. I live with her but I have a complete home theater setup outside of the living room. Anyway, in for 2.

Oh yeah, I cut the tie to cable/sat. But I do need the transport to work both Netflix and Vudu pause, remind, play, etc. As well as my Oppo Blu-ray player. Am I going to be really super satisfied?

It's both. Turning a bulb on is a stress, just as overall use is a stress. Think about it, usually (but not always) when light burns out in your house it's when you're turning it on. The sudden temperature change is tough on materials.

From what I've read the least amount of start up and cool down cycles increases bulb life. It is especially important to allow the bulb to cool properly before turning it back on. I have read many threads on AVS about this topic. There were some people that stated they got almost twice as many hours out of a lamp by not turning it off if they were going to be using the projector again fairly soon. Some had posted getting over 5000 hours out of a lamp that was only rated for 3000 hours by leaving it on for the entire day instead of turning it off and back on a bunch of times during the day.

Example, if you are going to be using it again within an hour or so then you are better off just leaving it on.

Of course YMMV and this topic can be discussed forever and you will never get a 100% solid answer because there are too many variables.

I'm still not sure about this one. I have an old Panasonic tv with a built in dvd and vhs. (Yeah, it's so old that it has a place for vhs tapes) Sounds like nobody has found a list of compatible things that this works with yet.

I'm glad to hear that it controls Roku thought! As it is right now, I have 3 remotes. One cheap universal one since my digital cable remote won't turn the tv on or raise and lower the volume. One for my digital cable, and one for my Roku. Normally I wouldn't think about paying a lot for a remote, but this one looks so cool and I do have quite a few remotes now.

Edit: This is actually a good deal when compared to how much it is on Amazon. Still though, I don't think my tv is worth as much as this remote is right now. :P I know that I need to get a new tv, but I really would hate to plop down a few or several hundred for a new lcd tv. The hard part is finding one cheap that is at least the size of the tv that I have now!

Edit edit: I'm in for one. I'll figure out if I need to get a new tv later. I just wanted to get this before it sells out since the price of it on Amazon is double.

I am looking to buy "Life Choices", any size, send me a message!

So fuhqued up.

This is a great remote. I bought one a couple of years ago to replace a more expensive one we had and I have had no problems. Easy to program. If you want to use the RF you will need the RF extender.

sure a cheap Harmony might be an alternative if you want a universal IR remote to control 5-6 devices. i have been looking for an RF capable remote for some time now. decided on this remote after deciding logitech RF remotes were too pricey. the only RF capable Harmony models are the 900 and 1100 both of which run about $250.

Non-techies: My non-techie wife and roommates never quite got used to using this remote, but easily use the Harmonies we had before and after it.

I got one of these on clearance when my Logitech Harmony broke and when this one broke I happily went back to a Harmony. The Harmony broke because it fell into a recliner on a regular basis. The AR just stopped working one day when I left it in the charger overnight.

Things a Harmony does that this does not:
  • Power button turns off everything. The AR just turns of the "primary" device, which often left us with the cable box off and TV on all night.
  • Remembers what devices it's using. When you switch activities on a Harmony, it will turn off things you won't be using. The AR just ignores things you don't need and tries to turn on the things you need. This sometimes results in it turning off something you needed.
  • Remembers which activity you were using. If you hit the "Devices" button to, say, turn off something, you then have to go back to "Activities" and select your activity again. Which will try to turn things on again. Which may turn off something. :-(

That said, I found the AR setup webpage easier to use than Logitech's with a nice graphical layout of the remote to help figure out what goes where. Although it didn't recognize as many of my devices as Logitech did.

And while I found it at least a workable replacement for the a Harmony, when I went on a trip my wife just didn't watch TV because she couldn't figure out the remote.

TL;DR - If you want a remote that Just Works, then get a Harmony. If you can put up with some quirks and have a Windows machine, then this one is decent.

Thanks for the info. I have the Harmony One as well. $150 is a lot for a remote, but now both my wife and my 6 year old can control our TV, game consoles, WDTV, A/V receiver, cable box and Blu Ray because I spent 2 night programming the remote!

(It was worth it.)

My OptomaHD70 has over 5000 hours and its rated at only 3000, I use it for long periods of time, rarely is it turned on or off more than once a day when its used. While the bulb is not putting out as much light as when it was new, its still working! This adds to the theory that leaving them on instead of turning them on and off many times a day is better. I know the Optoma says something like 8 hours max at at time in the manual.

I know a few people have asked about the compatibility with ps3, but does anyone know if the add-on RF Extender http://www.amazon.com/Acoustic-Research-ARRE433B-Wireless-Extender/dp/B002NPS3NG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312232230&sr=8-1 would enable one to use this for ps3? I've been looking at universals, and was almost sold on a Logitech Harmony until my father-in-law got one. No problems, but my husband thought it felt "cheap". His words, not mine.

It can learn functions. Just go into the menu to the learn function option it'll ask what button you want to program to do what and then you use the other remote to shoot the signal it sends for that function into the bottom end of the AR. Works pretty slick I had to use it because the menu button didn't work for my blu ray player

according to my google searches, there is no bluetooth support so you would need an IR-to-bluetooth converter to be able to control the ps3.

That is correct. So to answer the question "Will this work for the PS3?" the answer (for the default configuration) for most (if not all) universal remotes is NO. By default the PS3 uses Bluetooth so you would need IR adaptor. I know Logitech has this http://www.logitech.com/en-us/remotes/accessories/devices/5732 but don't know if it would work with this remote.

A lot of people are saying the reviews are bad for this but my question is, whould those reviews be that bad if they purchased the remote for $40? Yeah, there is going to be some issues with this thing but for $40 it sounds like an good deal with what it can do dispite the negative reviews.

I have a Harmony 900 but I purchased one of these for my bedroom.

I have had 2 logitech harmony remotes (a 520 refurb and a 550 new). Both remotes had buttons stop working after a year, so the quality of those remotes have turned me off from using universal remotes. I have had my eye on this remote for awhile and never picked it up because I didn't want to waste another $100 on a remote that would last for a year. This remote is definitly a good deal, even at amazon prices, when compared with the logitech (ex- rf, rechargeable with station).

definitly in for 1

woolygums wrote:How does this compare with the Universal Remote 980?

http://www.universalremote.com/products/residential/remotes/mx-980

I use one of these and it does well though it is several years old and programming is a bit tricky. I actually have the 950.

One of the things that intrigues me about the Harmony (possibly the AR remote offered today) is that most of my equipment has toggle on/off. Apparently the Harmony can tell if the equipment is on or off. This would simplify my life, as I often have to go to the equipment room and see.

How can the remote tell state of the equipment if it is operating though RF to IR emitters?

Comments greatly appreciated!

It simply remembers what your last activity was, and then sends the appropriate signals for the new activity.

If you go and physically shut off the cable box. The harmony will still think that it is on, because you haven't shut it off through the remote yet (which would turn it back on, because it will attempt to turn it off, and since you already physically turned it off, it will just turn it back on...lol, Get it?) It will just power toggle the device, which is where the Help/Assist feature comes in handy.

Not sure about the lower models but I have had the Harmony 880 for the past 5 years and its still works like new. Freshly charged still lasts over a month. Bought a new TV in June, and added it to my activities through their software in minutes and everything was all set. I would buy another one on eBay (between $40-70) before I'd ever waste my money on this.

You'll be lucky if support for this remote lasts another 6 months.

This is a great device, with only two small problems (which may get fixed with future software updates). One, it doesn't remember power states. I got around that by setting up an activity "Hello" (all on), then in other activities didn't toggle power states. Two, the software/web to run it is windows/internet explorer ONLY. I actually installed a virtual Windows 7 machine on my Mac just to make this work. Manufacturer claims to be working on a Mac version of the software, and hopefully will also fix the power state issue. Other than those, this remote is very impressive, and I love the color touchscreen. The price here is unbelievable.

That is not quite true. If you connect a device that supports Anynet+ coupled to a modern samsung flatscreen TV it'll power on the TV and change to the correct source once the device has been turned on. When turning the device off it'll change to the "TV" source, but will not turn off the TV. So in a way it does control it but it's not full control where you don't need the gamepad or remote.
