webOS is the best mobile platform available, and I say that as a (somewhat reluctant) Android user. Aside from the Touchpad, the Veer is now available and the Pre3 is supposed to drop soon, though nobody seems to know where just yet.

The biggest downside to webOS is the relatively-limited app catalog and developer support, which is understandable given its exclusivity and lack of popularity. That isn't to say there aren't plenty of apps, hacks, tips, and tricks, but it all pales in comparison to Android and iOS.

iPads are outselling every other tablet out there at a ratio of 24:1. I'm no Apple apologist, but there's not too many reasons to go with anything but...especially a WebOS product.

How does this compare to the iPad 1 or Xoom?

I have used every tablet known to man (perks of my job). Here's my take on the tablets:

-iPad 2: Nice design and weight but poor browser, no flash capabilities, and most expensive total cost of ownership (with the iTunes video/music/apps being so expensive). It's going to have the most accessories out there since it is Apple though.

-HP TouchPad: Again, nice simple design, almost a complete rip-off of the iPad 2. Advantages over the iPad: Does a great job with web pages and plays flash videos. Cons would mainly be that the HP market is relatively small compared to Android and iTunes, but that is to be expected. Also, it only has one camera on it (forward facing) and it isn't that spectacular.

-Motorola Xoom: Design is somewhat quirky... power button on the back is just strange and it doesn't charge via Micro USB cable like every other Android device. As for the OS, Honeycomb is ridiculously smooth. The Market is very strong and much cheaper than iTunes, many of the good apps are free or only a couple of bucks. Great cameras on both front and back, and better resolution than the HP or iPad, though the display is a bit dim. The fact that it currently doesn't support the Micro SD card and doesn't come "stock" with 4G LTE almost gives you the feeling that they rushed the release of this tablet, though it has some potential in the future.

-Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1": This is my favorite of the bunch... combines the great design and weight of the iPad/HP, but runs the (IMO) far superior Android Honeycomb. Screen is brighter than the Xoom with the same resolution.

I have 2 of these... 16 and 32 gig..

VERY easy to write apps and to port over apps you have written from IOS. HTML5 for the win!

This is a great device though doesnt quite have the app following yet.

HP claimed to be offering WebOS on all desktops and notebooks they offer next year... that will make app dev pick up a ton I am sure.

Its a tad heavier then a Ipad 2 almsot the same as an Ipad 1.

Audio is a TON better with Beats Audio. Recent update to WebOS 3.0.2 made mine really fly!

Although Palm developed WebOS, its current incarnation has nothing to do with Palm. HP has even removed backwards compatibility, which was available initially. Too bad because I am ADDICTED to Strategic Commander 1.2, which I play several times a day. In fact, it is the only reason I still have a Palm PDA. I would even consider getting this HPTouchPad just to play Strategic Commander if it is Palm compatible.

I used to run the old PALMos stuff too, and I thought about going to the PalmPre instead of an Android awhile back. I learned there were various emulation software that would effectively run on the PalmPre, I'd guess it would run Strategic Commander that way.

I know that the appeal of tablets is that they are So Star Trek...just a plug because I am going to the Convention in Vegas next week...but...

Wouldn't a Netbook be more useful than a tablet? Can't they do pretty much everything tablets do, but more, since they have keyboards, storage, etc?

So many people knocking it because it isn't iOs or Android. I was fortunate enough to win an HP TouchPad at an HP training event and have been thoroughly impressed.

Anyone who says its sluggish, laggy or not as smooth as Xoom, iPad or similar clearly hasn't used it for more than 2 minutes. Dual core 1.2ghz chips, Beats audio headphone jack, Gorilla Glass screen, the thing is loaded. As for as smoothness (which is very important in tablets) its about equal to iPad 2 and bests any Andriod or Blackberry tablet out there.

The TouchPad is far and away the easiest to use with "cards" and features like Just Type.

The only and seriously I mean the only thing I don't like about it is the limited app selection. Mind you Kindle is there, along with USA today, etc.

Take it from someone who owns one, its a very neat tablet.

For those curious about the price drop timing - it's because there's a 1.5GHz version coming soon. EXACT same hardware though - and you can install software to overclock this one to the same (even 1.9GHz tested at the moment!)

webOS is probably the best kept secret out there - once you realize how fluid it is to use it you'll be annoyed at all the pecking you have to do to get around iOS.

This is a steal - I'm in!

I bought one of these the other day on the recommendation of a co-worker, after my 1st gen iPad died. I like it for the most part, miss a few apps, but most everything I want to do I can do with the Advanced Browser app. It just got a lot better with the new update, the first few days before the update it had some snags now it seems everything is nice and smooth. It's not as sexy looking as the iPad, but it is still good looking and feels super solid. Weight could be a small issue, if you were holding it for more than 30 minutes or so, but on your lap you wouldn't even notice. Definitely would recommend, the app catalog should grow as well because it seems HP does a good job of treating the developers well, and they are committed to seeing webOS succeed.

like others have said, the most recent software update (3.0.2) fixed a ton of problems that the initial reviewers complained about. Here's my take on the touchpad - I had an ipad for about 8 months at work. I felt the UI of the ipad really limited my productivity. It was nice to do simple things like browse a webpage (no flash though), listen to music, or play a game but as soon as I tried anything more complicated, the shortcomings of the OS became very apparent. It's frustrating to attempt anything mildly complex on an ipad - as soon as you start cross referencing multiple things that are open - a web page and an email or a chat conversation and directions on a map, for example - you get stuck with apple's version of "multi tasking" which is objectively clunky compared to webOS. I've been using my touchpad since launch and it would pain me to have to go back and use iOS.

People have mentioned the homebrew community... just a little tidbit about that - my touchpad is humming along at 1.7ghz right now thanks to that group of people (stock is 1.2ghz). Totally legit, no hacking required, supported by HP. No other company embraces 'homebrew' like HP does.

Honestly, this is an amazing deal. Once you use webOS all of the other tablet OSes out there will seem boring in comparison (watch some demo videos if you want more demonstration). If you are in the market for a tablet, I promise you won't be disappointed with one of these.

Though I agree with you on most of your points, I own a Xoom and want a Galaxy Tab 10.1... there is no question in my mind that Honeycomb is not a kick-butt OS and smooth as hell.

Really, you can't go wrong with any of the major mobile tablets, with the exception of the Playbook and 7" Galaxy Tab. The playbook has no native email app, and they both look like Andre the Giant's cell phone.

For those people thinking about the "few apps" that WebOS doesn't have. It will not increase if you don't buy and support the platform. Not buying it because of the HP Catalog's lack of apps would also mean fewer developer interest. Catch 22.

Besides, essential apps like Evernote, Facebook, Twitter(3rd party), Foursquare, Pandora, Dropbox (3rd party), etc area already available on WebOS. Gameloft games as well. Not counting the available homebrew apps.

I'd get this if I didn't have an iPad 2 already.

Yes, but that's deceptive because the tablet market is still immature and very unstable. The Android tablet platform hadn't really arrived until Android 3.0, which is appearing in the latest highend tablets.

The real story is among SmartPhones, for which these OSs are made. Android phones are outselling iPhones 5-to-2. That's more than double! And Android smartphones have almost 50% of the market share with an upward trend. I assume that means that Android now has the largest share since the rest of the market is composed of Apple, RIM and smaller OSs. Sure RIM is not so small that Apple would have 50%...?

"The study looked at 56 countries and found Android to be the top platform in 35 of them. Its global market share is now at just under 50 percent..."

http://www.dailytech.com/Android+Outsells+iPhone+5to2+Has+Nearly+50+Percent+of+the+Market/article22326.htm

Apple's downfall will mirror the Mac's inability to overtake Windows. Simply put, Microsoft licensed their OS to any hardware maker willing to pay. That ranged from high school kids making $300 desktops to corporate giants like IBM. My first PC was made by Taiwanese immigrants in a basement. This strategy allowed a Windows PC in every home, no matter what your budget. Apple decided to be elitist and forced users to run their OS only on their hardware. The last Mac compatible disappeared about 16 years ago (I bet most people don't even know that there were Mac-compatible computers at one point). Furthermore, they inflated prices by stressing form over function, i.e. magnesium cases, handblown glass speaker enclosures, super thin notebooks, etc.

This Android vs iOS battle mirrors the Windows vs Mac war. Clearly, Appe hasn't learned from its past. Unlike kitchen appliances, computers are considered short-lived purchases because technology changes so fast. As such, most people -- and businesses -- are unwilling to spend so much money on Apple equipment when Windows and Android alternatives can cost so much less.

You are freaking OMGOMGOMGPONIESOMG PONIES! buddy. I work with all tablets, and the HP while it is a great tablet, definitely does not outperform any market tablet right now. Lets talk basics for a minute. If you are going to throw specs around, lets make sure you know what you are talking about... Asus Transformer yields a dual core 2.1 Ghz processor, whereas the HP Touchsuck only has a 1.2. Let's poll the audience on this one so you are well informed, and the public rules 2.1 is greater!!!!!! (What do we have for him Johnny?)
Next, who gives a crap about gorilla glass? That is why they make Invisishields and things like that... Also, I will have you know that gorilla glass is most definitely not scratch proof.
Thirdly, lets talk about the compatibility of the Touchpad.
1. Does it have an HDMI port? (NO)
2. Does it have a USB port other than the charging cable? (NO)
3. Does it have capability to support SD Cards? (NO)
What it does have is a mediocre webcam, and an audio jack! Such a commodity on tablets, that you can get it on any tablet on the market.

Lets look at the competition...
1.Ipad, it can adapt an HDMI cable!
2. Ipad, it adds a camera adapter!
3. Ipad has a much more stable market and app side
4. Wireless Keyboard for the Ipad!

Asus Transformer
1. Has 2 HDMI ports, 1 USB port (plus the usb cable port), Micro SD slot, and it doubles as a netbook with the keyboard plugged in.
2. 5 megapixel camera on the front, which is nothing special, but definitely destroys the cell phone quality camera in the HP
3. Oh, did I mention HDMI!?!?!?!

Get your facts straight before you boast it as the best tablet.

WEBOS
Snag a TouchPad For As Little As $345 This Weekend
Good news for webOS customers who waited to buy a TouchPad. With some couponing and savvy shopping, you could buy the 16GB TouchPad for as low as $345 this weekend. That's $155 off the original launch price of $500.

Anyone with a Staples nearby can visit their local store with this $100 off in-store coupon found on Fatwallet. The Touchpad is already discounted by $50 this week and this $100 coupon will drop the price to $350 for the 16GB and $450 for the 32GB model. The trick is finding a store that has the TouchPad in stock. I live in the sticks and all the stores within 100 miles are out of stock of the 16GB model. I'd have to drive 75 miles to get the 32GB model.

If you don't want to trek to the store and are enrolled in K-12 or college, you could take advantage of your educational discount via the HP Academy. HP will discount the TouchPad this weekend by $100 which drops the price of the 16GB model to $400 and the 32GB to $500. The HP Academy may take an extra $25 off the price of the tablet and a coupon (which may or may not work this weekend) could remove another $30. If you can combine these three discounts together, the 16GB TouchPad could be yours for as little as $345, the 32GB for $445. [webOS roundup and Staples]

sorry for this long cut/paste but I feel it explains what webos is all about very well. This was taken from the comments in the link that someone posted earlier (http://thisismynext.com/2011/08/02/touchpad-update-speed-stability-questions/):

HP TouchPad - Things I really Like and Things that Could Be Better:

1. Microsoft Exchange - I can run multiple Microsoft Exchange accounts in full profile (calendar, contacts, address book) without any issue.
2. webOS Synergy -integrates multiple accounts into intelligent consolidated profiles based on overlap. For example, when any of my LinkedIn contacts updates his/her job title, my contacts change automagically.
3. Multi-Dropbox - I can run 2+ Dropbox accounts simultaneously on the device. This isn't easy to do even on a desktop, but webOS was architected from the ground up to work with the cloud seamlessly.
4. Free storage - TouchPad owners get 50GB of free Box.net secure cloud storage for life, a great deal worth at least $10 per month or $240 over 2 years.
5. Background video - not everything playing on video needs to be watched with undivided attention, sometimes you just want to listen. It's nice that I can run a Flash video in a card in the background while doing email. True multitasking by choice.
6. Drafts - I can have several draft emails open at the same time, this is a more natural way to work, and you don’t need to press buttons to move in-between them; I can also open emails embedded in other emails.
7. Signatures - in webOS email, all your individual mailboxes have their own settings and signatures. So you can have a casual signature for personal and professional signature for work email.
8. Printing - works like magic out of the box with wireless HP printers or HP printers on a network. No setup needed, just auto-discover and go. It's the fastest I've ever test printed on a print-connected device.
9. Skype - is built into the OS, no app needed, plus you can load all your messaging contacts, calendars from Google, Exchange, Yahoo, AIM, Skype and LinkedIn leveraging webOS Synergy to create a unified view.
10. USB mounting - I can mount my HP TouchPad as a USB drive on any computer using a standard USB/microUSB cable. Sometimes, you need to move a whole folder of stuff and this is the easiest and quickest way to do it. You can access your saved files and folders on the device quite easily.
11. Email Attachments - You can attach multiple items to emails you're composing the same way you would on a desktop. Just find the right folder, or Dropbox, and simply select the file.
12. Sound - the speakers are amazing, actually better than some laptop speakers and the front facing camera, mike and speakerphone for video conferencing is very good.
13. Gestures - there are parts of the screen that are used to create special commands for navigation, very fluid.
14. Openness - Even though the device has a secure OS, instructions on how to "jailbreak" the device (to enhance its features unofficially) are available and even advertised in August's highlights in the official HP App Catalog -anyone can put the device in developer mode and tinker with it. You cannot "brick" a TouchPad.

What Could Be Better:

1. Camera -It would have been great to have a rear camera too. Currently the front facing camera only works for Skype, hopefully the API will be opened up to other services too.
2. Size and shiny finish -the device is thicker, this is a tradeoff to allow for inclusion of a wireless charging induction coil. Shiny finish bothered me until I put it in the standard case. Problem solved.
3. Lag and hardware acceleration -webOS still runs a little bit slower than iOS, but 3.02 is a definite improvement on 3.0 -there must be another big update soon because doc editing still isn't there.
4. Applications - webOS has few applications right now but is doing a lot of the right technical things to develop a long term following. Synergy APIs eliminate the need for many basic apps, but more progress is needed.
5. Country App Catalog lock - I understand that once you set your country for the App Catalog, it can't changed and you can never shop in a different country store. This sounds terrible and needs a fix.
6. web Optimization - there are still some things they are working out in the browser, video plays much better but some things aren't yet perfect with the way some web pages render.
7. MobileMe "cloud" contacts don't sync across in Synergy; I suspect that this isn't HP's fault.

Yes, it will. What's HP's record in developing and maintaining an OS? Nil. HP will be reluctant to put any more money into webOS than is absolutely necessary.

Apple will always produce the easiest to use and best thought-out OS's. They have been doing it for decades, and they have an enormous following.

Android, on the other hand, has a huge amount of community contribution. It's not well-organized, but the community will keep it alive.

webOS will stay around only as long as it makes sense for HP to put money into it.

$40 for me but some, like theguruguys, has a minimum of $45 although we don't know why. The $5 discount means that for items from $40 to about $60, we taxpayers actually end up paying less than non-taxpayer (aka we end up ahead if the tax comes out to be less than $5).

OK so, My decision is basically this or the Asus Transformer.

Has anyone tried them both? Pros? Cons?

Any insight is appreciated!
