From an IT Professionals perspective WebOS destroys both Android and iOS in terms of ease of use and features.

.Full multitasking
.wireless updates
.wireless sync
.wireless communication (calls/txts) between devices if you have a HP Veer of HP Pre 3
.HP Play to sync to iTunes or any other music service
.You can set up a media server at home and stream any digital file you want, defeating the need for a cloud (iCloud)

Bottom line is the HP TouchPad and WebOS are far more advanced than anything that is out now. When WebOS 1.0 was initially released iOS stole so many features from WebOS that it is astounding.

worldofjohnboy wrote:I have used every tablet known to man (perks of my job). Here's my take on the tablets:

-iPad 2: Nice design and weight but poor browser, no flash capabilities, and most expensive total cost of ownership (with the iTunes video/music/apps being so expensive). It's going to have the most accessories out there since it is Apple though.

-HP TouchPad: Again, nice simple design, almost a complete rip-off of the iPad 2. Advantages over the iPad: Does a great job with web pages and plays flash videos. Cons would mainly be that the HP market is relatively small compared to Android and iTunes, but that is to be expected. Also, it only has one camera on it (forward facing) and it isn't that spectacular.

-Motorola Xoom: Design is somewhat quirky... power button on the back is just strange and it doesn't charge via Micro USB cable like every other Android device. As for the OS, Honeycomb is ridiculously smooth. The Market is very strong and much cheaper than iTunes, many of the good apps are free or only a couple of bucks. Great cameras on both front and back, and better resolution than the HP or iPad, though the display is a bit dim. The fact that it currently doesn't support the Micro SD card and doesn't come "stock" with 4G LTE almost gives you the feeling that they rushed the release of this tablet, though it has some potential in the future.

-Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1": This is my favorite of the bunch... combines the great design and weight of the iPad/HP, but runs the (IMO) far superior Android Honeycomb. Screen is brighter than the Xoom with the same resolution.

The SD card support for the xoom was enabled in the last update.

so many haters of WebOS when they've never even had a WebOS device.

It puts iOS to shame (esp in terms of multitasking) and when the Palm 3 launches the two get to play nice together by sharing information and you'll be able to pick up calls and texts from the Touchpad.

Don't forget that this comes with 50gb of free Box.net storage and 90 days of HP Butler support. The latest update really makes things very snappy. It is a great tablet and if you get one make sure to grab the Kindle app, Angry Birds HD (free), and Robotek.

I purchased a HP TP 32g and am very happy with it. Are there a million apps to choose from? - No, but I am an adult and have a job, not much of an issue. Have had a iPad 64g for over a year and it started my tablet facination. Sophie's choice: I would keep my HP Touchpad, the lack of flash is extremely annoying, the 'card' idea is excellent. HP roled up an update already that addressed several issue, I hope that they continue those updates to make improvements moving forward.

HP Touchpad - WebOS, it may not take a bit out of apple, but it will be right behind them.

Yes, I apologize. I shouldn't have entered into this discussion. I swallowed a bad number about iOS shipments, and I hadn't seen Minis in server closets or kiosks so I assumed there weren't any. BAD assumption.

You see, I don't hate Apple stuff and I don't hate "on" Apple. What I hate is what happens to people caught up in the Apple culture so they confuse preference with superiority and attacks with discussion.

For example, Macs aren't used in supercomputers (racks of regular ol' boxes). Therefore the very idea has to be ridiculed.

Nokia phones have far outsold iPhones (by selling hard to the low-end market segment that Apple wouldn't want), so Nokia must be mocked and iOS numbers exaggerated.

(Unless - again, an assumption - you have an article you can cite for, "Apple had already shipped 100,000,000 iOS devices *years* ago"? Jobs announced 120 million on 9/1/10.)

I see OS X and iOS as unix derivatives that don't have any greater appeal or usefulness to me than other unix derivatives.

Honest, I've owned them a few times. They're different, but that doesn't make them better. Or worse. But my gosh, the difference in the camp followers can be really bad.

For the same reason you dont see Bose or Oakley.

And apple is the same way.

Do you know why you pay 60% more? Have you ever unboxed an iPad? I'd rather have my stuff sent to me in egg cartons and pay half the price then spend 10 minutes with a bunch of over-marketed shiny plastic.

Apple is a marketing machine. They do it very well. And they charge you for it. The very best part is I've been able to see the faces of the teachers who thought they were winners because they got sets of iPads for the kids. The more time goes by, the more the realize what they get to deal with. The silver lining there is iPads won't support flash, so a lot of youtube is out. Saves my network.

What I wish is that MS would get their ducks in a row and do some dev work. I could really use some of these that were actually fit for classroom consumption. HP will very likely get into that, being that enterprise is their bread and butter. Can you imagine how much they would make if they wrangled the LDAP support so that you could add these to AD or whatever you used?

I just got mine last week from Costco (32gb one hundred more). I have had Android and iPads in the past (Xoom went back, iPad to my father), so I know my tablets. I love the TouchPad.

WebOS is absolutely the best OS for tablets today. OS only gets you so far, but WebOS is simply the best at multi-tasking, notifications, learning curve, etc. the foundation for the device is spectacular.

The TouchPad also has the most complete browsing experience in tabletland. Whether you want to participate in Jobs' Flash strike is up to you, but the ability to go to Amazon and Wal-Mart/Vudu and simply stream movies is awesome. i can go to Hulu and watch shows without paying for Hulu Plus.

16gb on the device, but 50gb free for life from Box.net.

The limited number of apps can't be denied, though I don't feel a lack of apps. I can read my news, get my weather, email, chat, and play my games. I am sure there are awesome apps I don't have, but I simply don't have time where I don't have them.

The biggest lack on the Touchpad is Office doc editing. While they can be viewed, and there are several nice writing applications. Document editing is still in the "coming soon" list. I don't need it, I use mine for writing, not for spreadsheets or formatted text, but the lack is there and it is significant. I can also open and edit GoogleDocs while on-line and that works ok, but it depends on the strength of the connection.

I have the BT keyboard for longer writing sessions, and it is a great system.

As far as a reputation for lag, I got mine the day of the patch, so I have never noticed any lag.

It is unclear. Apparently, HP has sent developers to many places to facilitate app creation for big players, but no one knows if Netflix was included or receptive. Since I am an Amazon Prime member. I haven't felt the lack, but if that were not the case, I would have, for sure.

Don't even think of the cheap tablets. Without decent battery life, capacitive screens, etc. they're amusing but not very useful.

All the quality tablets are fine, including this one. I've used them all, and feel that the best of the lot is the 7" Galaxy Tab. It's fast, does everything, has the best display, and fits in my inside jacket pocket (it balances my Glock on the other side).

And this? Well, I used it for a few days and thought it was well-executed. It's definitely a fine tablet, but the question is whether HP can generate enough developer support. I think so. Who doesn't listen to HP?

And price doesn't matter much - they're all coming down. If this appeals, buy it. Very few will be disappointed. If you absolutely must have the lowest possible price, enjoy the hunt!

The issue almost certainly is not the air being too cool, but the air being too thin to properly cool the processor!

Word to the wise: If you're going above a mile above sea level, consider dialing back that 1.7 or 2.0 GHz overclock, lest you burn your processor up in short order.

Air at higher altitudes is thinner. Therefore there are fewer atoms of air to bounce against the hot surfaces inside your computer. Therefore the processor and disk retain more heat than they would at sea level, and are at greater risk of burning up.

I had a 32GB about a week after launch and used it for about two weeks before returning it.

The OS is smooth. Turn off the excessive logging that these devices come with and it's even smoother.

Flash in the browser is nice, but it really needs a port of NoScript so you can enable the bits you want and ignore the ones you don't.

The kindle app was released a day or two before I returned it. I had a Kindle with me on the trip, so I wouldn't have used it anyway.

HP Movie Store also came online at the end of my trip. Prices were too high and the selection was weak.

QuickOffice actually made me want to see how well OpenOffice was doing as QuickOffice wasn't able to render anything but the most basic PowerPoint slide.

Apps. There weren't thay many, but there were a number of useful ones, just not enough.

All in all, I liked the platform, but didn't feel like the $600 I shelled out was well spent. For that kind of money, I shouldn't have been expected to be a beta tester.

If they can get the prices down another $100 from here ($300 and $400) then I might buy one again. MIGHT, not would.

It will be a good device once the developers come back.

By any other name this is a computer, and the success or failure of a computer depends on its operating system. The success or failure of an operating system depends on how many manufacturers load it on their hardware, and how many developers jump aboard to develop applications. How many app markets are there for WebOS? Are all of the "standard" apps available for WebOS (social media, email, navigation apps, music apps, popular games, etc.)?
It amazes me how often techie types demand that you go purchase a piece of technology because "it's designed/engineered better". Since when has that ever mattered? Ask Sony how well that strategy worked out for them.

Except they are backed by a company with a very large market presence now that HP bought them, and are going to implement this OS in all their devices. In fact, the Palm name doesn't even exist anymore. Maybe if you tried WebOS you would change your mind. I do not own a touchpad but I love my Pre, and think it is way easier to use than an iPhone. When I decide to buy a tablet it will be one running WebOS...
