This is still my favorite tablet. I use it for gaming a lot. Wii controller via BT to play all my old ROMS, works wonderfully! It has apps to remote control my Onkyo stereo from my front or back deck. It has apps to send music from any of my media servers to said stereo. I can remote control my media center PC on my projector with it. About a thousand other things I can't think of.

I'm running Brilliant Corners and love it! The only thing I won't do is read books on it, the screen really does suck for that. Though it works great as a Comic book reader.

I spent all weekend modifying my new Touchpads (both 32G), and that is a very nice device, the screen for sure, but it isn't anywhere near as capable as this tablet. And the iPad is even less capable.

If you missed a touchpad during the sale, this is hands down the next best thing. In fact, it is the best thing for the price. Unless you can find a transformer for the same a price of course.

I've had one of these and returned it two days later. I could not get over how bad the viewing angles of the screen are. Also the screen is long and narrow compared to other 10 inch tables which make it basically useless in portrait mode, nothing fits correctly.
It is also kind of thick and heavy compared to other 10 inch tablets. That being said it is pretty fast out of the box and if you root it and install a new rom it can be even faster the specs of the hardware pretty much match all the other android tabs on the market. Unless your just looking for a toy I would Pass.

Ok. I've had one now for several months. I've rooted it and tried out several ROMs. Here are my observations (I've been using Cyanogenmod 7 for some time).

1) My kids love it - I mean love it a lot.
2) It is fast and has great battery life
3) Developer support is strong.
4) Screen viewing angles are not great. But when looking straight on, screen is bright and easy to see.
5) More apps work on the tablet then I expected. Cut the rope, angry birds, fieldrunners, jet car stunts, etc. are really good. I have at least 40 games on there my kids and I play.

All around, you won't find a cheaper tablet with more capability. The Tegra 2 is really quick, and games look great (try galaxy on fire 2 or Guerilla bob to see what I mean). I don't regret getting it at all.

I use the Gtabcomb ROM. If you want to modify the ROM, I recommend reading through how to use NVFlash. If you know how to do this, it gets pretty darn easy to fix any mistakes you make.

There's a difference between stock version 1.1 and 1.2. So there are NVFlash which will take you back to 1.1 or 1.2. Whatever ROM you install, make sure it's for the right version of the stock ROM.

Flashback is another Honeycomb ROM. The following link has a copy of NVFlash that will add Clockwork Mod as well making adding the next ROM easier:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?s=5c5eee358cc5628c361dbe8fbc3f4897&t=1138100

All Honeycomb mod currently doesn't have a working camera. Also there are issues with the stock browser using flash video and running HD video.

You can always use Cyanogenmod if you're content with gingerbread (I did for a while).

Sometime in the next few months google will release Ice Cream Sandwich. When they release the source code, I think modders will be able to make stable mods that don't have these issues. Currently they have to cobble together honeycomb from other devices which can cause issues. Google won't release the Honeycomb source code because they worry people will put it on phones and it won't work on phones because it's tablet only. In other words, Google thinks the people who go to the effort of rooting their devices and adding a custom ROM are complete OMGOMGOMGPONIESOMG PWNIES OMGs with no common sense.

It would be really useless as a sheet music reader, I think. Unless you can have it at eye level and your head doesn't move when you play. The viewing angle really is that bad.

I bought this the first time around and I love it. The viewing angle is not a problem unless a bunch of people are around it trying to view it.
I used the Vegan Tab and loved it. I had to send it in for warranty. The power connection stopped working. I got it back in two weeks.

They put the new TapNtap rom on it and so far, it will run everything that I was using before except G-Market. I Amazon market and I like it better. If I run across something that Amazon does not have, I download it on the PC and load it using my micro SD card. Netflix is an example. It runs great. When I have time I will look into just rooting it so I can us adfree.

Honeycomb is a temptation though, but if you are afraid to mess with it, just leave it as it comes.

I watch downloaded movies, Netflix, play games, flash websites work great. I probably will not mess with it this time around. I got 1800 on quadrant. A little slower than Vegan, but all programs run great.

Currently running GtabComb 3.2 on mine. Yes, the viewing angle is narrow, but it still is a really great tablet. As delivered, it's limited - no access to the full Android Market, but once upgraded, the full market is available.
The biggest problems with upgrading the ROM to one of the flavors of Honeycomb available are the fact that the camera doesn't work, HD movies won't play back in HD without an extra app, and flash can be tricky.
Plenty of upgrade information on slatedroid.com and xda-developers.com

If you are new to rooting, as I was, I recommend these two sites:

I agree that the screen's angles of visibility are not great, but it really hasn't bothered me as much as I worried it might.

The hardware on this really is stellar, and if you're willing to do some modding, it has a lot of power, long battery life, and more and more app offerings all the time. I'm a fan.

On a Touchpad vs. G-Tab note, how does the dual Snapdragon plus Adreno 220 compare to the Tegra 2 in terms of speed?

All I could find is that the Snapdragon is about 5-10% faster than a Cortex A8. This makes a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon comparable to a 1.3 GHz A8.

The A9 is supposed to be 25% faster than an A8, so a 1 GHz A9 in a Tegra should be around a 1.3 A8 too.

So the comparison comes down to the Adreno 220 vs. GeForce ULP, and I'm getting info all over the map on this. Some say Adreno is faster, some say they are about equal.

Anybody have a more definitive answer?

I bought one of these new from Woot via Amazon a few weeks ago for $20 more. The view angle IS terrible, but I've gotten used to it and the devise is still very useable. The version of android that comes loaded is pretty awful as well, but installing a custom rom is a snap, it took me a couple of hours to get Cyanogenmod running and most of that time was spent just figuring out how one installs a custom ROM and then finding the correct download links. If you can afford something better, than by all means you should skip this one. I bought this instead of a Nook because I have a lot of Kindle books. If I could go back and do things over again I think I would go for the Nook, but I am not all that displeased with this thing. I think I would rate it a 3 of 5 stars.

It's fast and works great when modded. I had two issues though:
1- the screen - of course this is a common gripe and it is not too bad for indoor viewing but don't even think of trying to look at it from any angle other than straight on if you are outside. Interestingly the angle if you look at it upside down is a little better and with VeganTab Ginger edition you can allow it to flip any way you want, which helps for movies etc.
2- Issues playing videos - because the Gingerbread mods still don't have hardware acceleration there are issues trying to play videos and its tough to get any compressed videos to play. This was a dealbreaker for me. I did get them to stream with Tversity and Vplayer but it was a little buggy but did work.

In the end I sold mine and plan on getting a used Ipad for just a tiny bit more. If the hardware acceleration and viewing angles were better this would be a no brainer.

There seems to be more positive about this than negative provided you do this, that or the other thing. SO>>> I'm in for one.

Someone out there better be able to help me make this thing hum based on all the comments about rooting this and rooting that. Hey so, I've spent some time with both the gtab (few days with it) and the nook color(i own it), which has also been featured here in the past, i think. i prefer the nook color.

gtab advantages:

* faster standard clock processor (and i think it can overclock faster as well)
* enough oomph to play video
* bigger screen
* camera (no camera really sucks for nc)
* better bluetooth (for nook color, requires an updated ROM to activate bluetooth, while gtablet's is meant to work properly)

nook color advantages:
* with processor overclocked to 1.2 GHz, runs cm7 very smoothly with no lag, although video can lag a bit
* much more holdable--gtablet is really awkward to hold for long periods of time
* way higher quality IPS screen with fantastic viewing angles (the gtablet's screen angles are bad enough that you can't even get a full bright view of the entire thing if you hold it in portrait)
* this is also a screen note, but it's not as smudgy
* more accessories (i bought the cheapest leather cover for the nc on ebay and it works just fine, for the most part)
* CHEAPER (can be found for $160 refurbed these days)

at the end of the day, it's whatever you need in a tablet, but i think the nook color wins the day for me. but if the gtablet's what you want, this is a great price for it

While I love the G-Tablet, I feel I must let the new buyers know about the lack of support from Viewsonic. The independent developers have really made this unit into something but they are not getting any help from Viewsonic. See https://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=58738271675&topic=18712#topic_top
and http://www.facebook.com/gTabletOwners. Please visit the XDA Developer's Forum and http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/ before making your purchase. If you have the skill or can follow the instructions you will fall in love with this tablet. Viewsonic has already gone on to another tablet so don't expect help from them.
