Does anyone who has already received theirs have any first impressions they could share with the group? Would help pass the time while the rest of us are waiting!

I got mine this morning with FedEx Home Delivery. All is good with it except for one thing which is the wireless. It is showing me that there is a wireless adapter under Device Manager but it is not picking up any wireless connections. I looked on the back of the computer and there is the golden plated antenna area for the wireless but there is no antenna attached to it? Could that be the problem? I haven't used a PC in a long time, so I am not familiar with wireless cards in general.

If someone can tell me what I should do, I'd appreciate it. I just assumed that it would pick up a wireless connection right of the bat.

Other than that, it seems quite fast and all good.

It could be as simple as turning on the wireless adapter with a keyboard switch. The wireless adapter on my hp laptop is turned on with the F12 key, and there is an indicator light on the key that turns on when the wireless adapter is on. Good luck and thanks for your update!

Mine arrived this morning and was DOA. Motherboard lights up, but the hard drive does nothing. I am bummed.

P.S. I got a shipping notification a couple of days ago.

The two versions that were part of this offering were both suppose to have an internal antenna. If you have one with an external antenna connector I would guess someone got there model numbers mixed up. I have 2 very similar systems to the one's here but they do have an external antenna connector and came with an antenna(as they were suppose to).

The HP Pavilion 6000 series generally only have minor differences. The processor speed and number of cores, amount of memory, size of disk drive seem to be the main changes.

On your system there will be a label, most likely located on the left side(as viewed from the from) near the top front. It should have either BV530AA or BV545AA for the 2 models offered. If not they substituted another version. The other option is that when it was refurbished(assuming that one of the numbers above was correct) that they substituted another wireless card and forgot to include the antenna.

I guess there could be other options, at least this should give you some place to start checking.

Woot! Mine's here! FEDEX flies!

Everything works great. Uninstalled the Symantec stuff and other bloatware crap. Got my apps on it now. Copying files over at the moment.

All I can say is this thing is dead quiet. I was using a vintage 2004 Compaq SR1250NX before. I thought it was still OK, but man, this thing is the berries. You could hear the Compaq in the other room! Only issue so far is getting used to the keyboard.

Put in a R5450 512 mb silent graphics card just to relieve the CPU from that duty. I can't tell any speed diff, but may see it as I process photos or MP3s.

I hope this holds out as long as my old friend, The Compaq, did.

Here's to WOOT!

I'm pretty bummed as well. A full week to ship (one sunday & one holiday). People who had theirs shipped early have an expected delivery date of Wednesday. I'm expecting mine to ship on Tuesday...arrive maybe Saturday? Now, if mine doesn't ship on Tuesday, that would really really suck. lol

Yes, I am in the same boat all these orders are being fulfilled and I have not even heard a peep from Woot, irregardless of a delay or notification of order processing. My money was withdrawn the same day i submitted my order. I will wait until Tuesday before i call my bank or someone else for help in this matter, woot is a good company but i dont think i will use them in the future..

Same here; no word from woot. I am going overseas in a week and was expecting to receive it before then. Hopefully at the very least FedEx can hold on to it until I return.

That would last a while and you don't really need to get a top-end brand PSU like Antec honestly. You definitely could cut it under $200 for the upgrade and I think that makes a pretty nice gaming system for $500.[/quote

I'm trying to turn my Desktop into a gaming system. Would this above me work well?

Hi Friartek,

I was out since yesterday and just saw the responses to my post. I checked that sticker you mentioned and it says BV530AAR#ABA.

They obviously forgot the antenna. Would any antenna work or does it have to be the same brand that the wireless card is? I assume any antenna should work but thought I should check with more knowledgable guys like yourself here.

Oh also, for anyone wondering...I never got a notice from woot saying that my item was shipped. Yesterday FedEx Home delivery just popped up on my door.

Looks like FedEx is having some problems. Here's what FedEx has on mine which had an expected delivery date of Sat. Sept. 3rd but it never made it & which now has no estimated delivery date:

Sep 2, 2011 5:12 AM Departed FedEx location
HUTCHINS, TX

Sep 1, 2011 3:47 PM Arrived at FedEx locationHUTCHINS, TX

Aug 31, 2011 12:20 PM Shipment information sent to FedEx

FedEx says weather may be causing delays in service & disruptions. The holiday may be getting in the way for FedEx, too.

Good luck to everyone else in getting their shipment.

Yes, I was suppose to get mine on the 3rd then the date got pushed back to the 7th. When it pushed the date back it said that I would get an update on shipping on the 3rd but it hasn't updated. I kind of doubt I'll get it on the 7th.

I agree with moneyfornothing's answer. HP failed to supply an antenna, which would have made a complete system.

As to your question about available antennas, there are any number available, including standard and hi-gain ones. If you decide to go this route, make sure it was designed for a wi-fi adapter with 802.11 b/g/n capabilities at 2.4 GHz. My first choice would be to contact HP and have them correct their oversight.

The technical part of me would make one more check before calling HP. Open the access panel and verify the cabling, they most likely will ask you that when you call. Having access just makes it easier for everyone. If you still have questions, I'll keep an eye open to this discussion for a while. Good luck.

Got the pc on Saturday. FedEx used Home Delivery service which will leave package on weekends. Nice pc. Very impressed with speed and wireless internet. Haven't opened up box to see innards but know I will have to replace power supply with bigger one and add another hard drive. Looks a good all-around purchase. Wish I had bought a few additional ones.

I think you may be surprised on how much you can add without a larger power supply. I've been running one of mine with 2 hard drives, a PCI express GeForce 8500 GT graphics card and 8GB of memory for months now. Another with 2 hard drives, and additional DVD writer and 6GB of memory since February. There are limits, but I haven't reached them on mine.

I've been very happy with my purchases and if it wasn't for my daughter's wedding(which is much more important to me) I might have snatched up another myself.

So, I just got off the live chat with an HP Rep and turns out that my computer was shipped with a wrong Wireless Card. This computer is supposed to have an internal antenna but mine was shipped with a wireless card that required an external antenna. Instead of just sending me the antenna, HP is sending me the actual wireless card that this computer was supposed to come with.

Also, for anyone interested, this is the computer we are being sent by HP.

For what it's worth, mine shipped 9/1 and FedEx estimates 9/7 delivery. Typically on a ground delivery, once it boards the truck I don't see an update until it gets to my local depot, usually the day before it's due. I dunno why some people aren't getting shipping notifications -- I might suggest the obvious spam folder check. (The email is from "Woot Tracking Bot" (noreply@noreply.woot.com) with subject "Woot Order Tracking Number.")

On a different subject, HP's guide to upgrading memory is here. They recommend that all DIMMs in the system be identical: same manufacturer, model, specs, everything, or the system may not be able to configure the memory properly. Two questions for you folks:

- For anyone who got their PC already: what make/model DIMMs did you get?

- I know some of you intend to immediately upgrade to 16 GB. I might, but thought this thread might be able to serve as a clearing-house for people who want to upgrade to 16GB to sell their old RAM to other buyers who want to upgrade to 8GB. I realize such a transaction doesn't carry the protections you'd get, say, at eBay (such as they are) -- but the board could help set a fair price, and would serve both the sellers (providing a ready market for castoff memory) and the buyers (a great source for inexpensive memory that matches their exact requirements). I wonder if there is any precedent for this that anyone here can relate? Am I just a sentimental fool -- or a gullible one at any rate? Does such discussion break the rules of the board? Thoughts?

Thanks...

Same boat as many others; my order is still listed as "ordered", with no change in status, no tracking number, no update, no computer. I've got no sound on mine. The sound drivers are there and enabled, the sound is not on mute. I can't get any sound out of the jacks on the HP. I've rebooted. Everything else works. I've got it connected to an monitor thru the DVI to HDMI. Is there no sound because of the type of monitor connection? I get no sound out of the monitor either.

Woot does state that orders "typically ship within 5 business days", and we're only on day 4 of this.

I'm also one of the people in the "no update, no computer" group, and am sitting here getting anxious as to when I might see it, but I know I've got until end of close tomorrow to see something from them before I drop a line in to contact them.

I guess it depends to some extent how computer-savvy you are. Just some ideas: MSFT offers "Windows Easy Transfer" which uses a special cable to connect the two systems via USB; I have zero experience with this but MSFT says it makes the process very easy. I don't imagine it offers you much flexibility however. (Edited to add: I don't know whether Easy Transfer is even compatible with Windows ME, or whether ME even supports USB!)

There are IDE-to-USB adapters like this one that will let you attach your old PC's drives to a USB port on the new PC long enough to transfer the files. You can also get an IDE/USB adapter box to permanently house the old disk, if you like, though its capacity is probably too small to worry about holding onto. You could also connect both PCs to your LAN and use Windows file sharing to transfer files, or create Zip archives of your files and transfer them using FTP, e.g. Filezilla server and client programs.

I would just use an external hard drive, and manually copy your My Documents folder. If you are using Outlook, or Outlook Express, it will get a little tricky. Also your favorites are stored in another folder, I can't remember the path on ME. But most everything you need will be in your My Documents folder. Check your Desktop for files as well, some of my clients store files there as well.

Have you hooked up a separate cable for the sound? The DVI connection doesn't carry the sound signal.

@mom2mny, you definitely should get the external drive, and use it for regular backups once you get established on the new PC. A USB-powered 1TB external drive can be had for as little as $80 on sale -- so no excuses! ME includes USB support, but it's possible you may need to obtain a driver for your external disk to work with ME.

I had the sound going out to the monitor. I wonder if I'm supposed to have the digital sound connection hooked up?

I changed to the VGA cable and there's no sound. I guess I'm to assume that there's no speaker in the computer. Even the cheapest laptops have speakers.

Now I need to see if I have any speakers around that I can hook up. It works now.

Does anyone know if you have the DVI cable connected does that mean you have to use digital audio?

I've owned about 20 different desktop computers and have yet to see one that had a speaker built in. You may have a speaker in your monitor that you could connect from your onboard computer sound card, or add a pair of computer speakers.
