Agreed - we have a three-car garage consisting of a two-car and a single-car door. I would not consider a 1/2 hp for the two-car door. Since the Genie I have on the one-car door died I guess I'll be in for one of these. Hopefully, it will easily mount on the existing stuff I have in place. Side note - before the Genie died, we were having a lot of problems with the door opening without our using our remote or the button on the wall. I expect that someone else in the neighborhood was opening their door and it triggered ours as well. I thought the Homelink stuff was supposed to prevent that sort of thing. It's not good to go out to the garage in the morning and discover that one of your garage doors is open! Luckily, we were not burglarized by someone cruising the neighborhood looking for someone stupid enough to leave their garage door open...

One review that made me really think was were the guy found out that this is a single code unit, meaning that if a near by house has one then we get to play musical garage doors for a bit. Yep just like the commercial on TV, "life comes at you fast".
I know, it would probably be a rare occurrence, but I'd sure hate to go through all the install work and then find this happen. I think I'll wait and look for a rolling code opener.

Genie's site says it is a rolling code:

I am generally quieter when clean and lubed, as well.

Yes...but...most standard garage doors are 7 feet high. So you will have to hang the opener unit from the ceiling using 4-5 feet of angle iron or equivalent. The opener and rail will need to be level just above the highest point of the door.

I must have been lucky. My first garage door opener was installed in '69 (that's 1969) and it had a 1/2 HP motor that operated a 16' x 7' wooden door with windows. The other openers I have had in 3 subsequent houses have always had 1/2 HP motors and heavy 16x7 ft doors. I never had a hint of a problem and I don't expect any with this opener operating my current door, which is a 16x7 double-side steel clad door, that is currently operated by a Genie 1/2 HP screw drive.

Maybe some of these folks that don't think a 1/2 HP equivalent door is good enough for a "standard" residential door have a lot bigger or heavier door, or don't have springs on them (properly adjusted springs). BTW, various openers have had to operate from temps that range from well below zero to over 115 degrees F.

How I got CFL's to work. I installed a light bulb socket to outlet adaptor. Then into that I plugged in a homemade "lamp" that mounts to the rafter near the opener.

I bought one from Woot a couple of months ago. I replaced a 25 year old Stanley unit. I could reuse the door attachment and the anchoring bracket above the door. It was quite easy to install and set up. The door photo cells took the longest to install but were easy to align. Very quit !!! I highly recommend this Woot.

I picked it up on sale for less than $150 a few months ago and love it. Just keep your eye out for their sales. I like everything about it, especially the great indoor opener pad that has a temp & time display, rolling status message if needed, learning button so you do not need to climb up and motion sensor to automatically turn on the light. Much quieter that our screw drive, both open and close at about the same speed.

I have a new Craftsman and it does not work with CFL, however my 5 year old model does. Please research online as they have listed some solutions i have never tried

See, and I'll bet this doesn't even get a quality post rating. Who decides these things? This is a quality post if I've ever seen one.

I just received my garage door opener yesterday (received FedEx shipping notice for delivery literally 20 mins before it arrived) and the garage door side pulley wheel was cracked and broke during the initial setup. This pulley wheel is made of relatively cheap plastic so be careful! I have already contacted Genie about a replacement part which they grudgingly are willing to send out. So far I am not impressed with the quality of the product!

I missed the bit about this one being for "sectional residential doors only". This is the only 1/2hp unit I've seen with that caveat - will it really not work for my one-car garage door? It's a 7x9' monolithic wooden door.

I finished installing mine yesterday. It works beautifully with my 16x7 double sided steel door.

HOWEVER, I happened to notice that the chassis was unusually warm after several hours of inactivity. I measured the power with my KILL-A-WATT power meter and found the standby power was 8 watts. Folks, that's 70 KWH per year while doing nothing. I disconnected all of the wiring and it still consumed over 7 watts.

I contacted Genie and they are sending out another power head. I'll bet mine is not the only one that should be replaced. Hopefully the replacement will be different!

I would be surprised if you can't make it work. The thing I would worry about is the arm that connects the door to the track. I had to use the arm from my existing opener because the new one from Genie wouldn't have worked without extending it so far that the closed angle was much greater than 50 degrees. I used several pieces from my previous Genie opener.
Look at other openers and see what they have to say about one-piece doors. If you already have an opener, then you may have to look carefully to make sure you can duplicate the mechanical setup and make sure the springs are tensioned properly so the opener doesn't have to work extra hard.

I looked at the manual for my Genie Screw-drive model IS550. The angled piece of the connecting rod is connected to the carrier, not the door, as it would be for a sectional door. Get a manual for any other older opener and look at the mounting instructions. The reason this is probably not reccommended for a one-piece door is that the power required to move it is probably greater than for a sectional door, and this is a "1/2 hp equivalent" that provides the necessary forces to move a sectional door. The soft start provices more power at startup when the force required to get the door moving is the greatest. If you live in a cool climate and the door is properly lubricated and balanced, and you run it intermittently, it will probably work OK; I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

I bought this deal a couple of months back and got around to installing it about three weeks ago. I was replacing a 20-year old chain drive opener. The fact that I was replacing an existing opener was a big help; I was able to use some of the existing door attach hardware, as well as some of the hardware for mounting the motor and belt track, which saved me some time and effort. Even though I'd never installed one of these before, I think the whole job, including removing the old chain-drive opener, took less than two hours.

I'm quite pleased so far; the Genie unit is very quiet and operates smoothly. The included outdoor keypad opener is nice, especially in my case, since the existing keypad opener I had isn't compatible with Genie's rolling code system.

I don't regret my purchase at all.

By the way, at the same time I installed the new opener, I replaced all the metal rollers on my garage door with new nylon rollers, which are much quieter. I recommend that to anyone that is trying to make the door operate as quietly as possible.
