alericb wrote:I got mine yesterday, updated to 2.2.1, and I can't install the Amazon app. Everytime it wants to register my Google account, which I have, but it times out. Anyone know of a workaround? Thanks.
On your PE, in the browser go to www.amazon.com/amazonappstoreapp. Use the "Download now" button to download. After downloading you should see an icon with a down arrow in the upper left of the screen. Drag down the top bar. Select the Amazon .apk and you should see an "Install" button at the bottom of the screen - select same. It should now be installed.
Since it was already installed on mine(June purchase), I could not duplicate each step so I hope all the steps are correct.
Update: alericb reported back, "That worked perfectly.".

As previously mentioned, SmartPost is where FedEx delivers the package to a regional USPS distribution center; then it goes through the normal postal system to final delivery.

I have all the update files, instructions to upgrade, user manual, have watched all the YouTube videos (more than once), and been sifting through many user forums.
I think I'm ready to go...lol
Love your attitude -- be prepared. If everyone did this, there would be half the posts here. Good luck.

Its a learned thing. After the first one you track you will learn the route. For the greater Chicago area, when I see it reach New Berlin, WI., I know the next step is to deliver it to the USPS. Why WI? If you can answer that one, let me know. You may find yours going to some strange place also.

OK, you made be go look. Found this:
From: FedEx web page.
This will most likely cause more questions once people start trying to match this up with actual tracking data.
Update: BTW - New Berlin, WI is SmartPost HQ. ??? Google maps: 43.006452,-88.12061 if your interested.

I had to do it a few times before it would work. I turned it off and back on to get to the first screen again.

cajunseo wrote:I want to know if there is any special order that you need to do any of this? Most of the names that are being tossed around (froyo, rooted, etc) are totally unfamiliar to me. I don't know what these programs do or the terms mean. Can someone maybe help with that?
And a suggestion, the first thing that I did after ordering was to start copying and pasting to a word document the different links that everyone was posting.
Froyo is Android 2.2.
Ermine is enTourage's code name for their release of Froyo/Android 2.2.
Update: Almost all operating systems code name their releases of software. You will run into this almost everywhere you go. Even MS does this internally before they release the final version. Andriod/Linux users tend to use the code names to identify the version they are referencing. It is something you just get used to over time.
Rooted is used in UNIX and Linux(including Android) systems to gain access to everything. Sometimes called the superuser. To say the least it can be very dangerous if you do the wrong thing. Use with care. May be required to make some changes to the system. Only use it if you have to. Follow instructions carefully.
Read post 4636201.(I believe you have already done this.)
Then you can start to add apps.
etc: Need something more specific, or I might start going on and on about the /etc directory/folder on Linux/UNIX systems. You really don't want me to get started on that.

cajunseo wrote:Thank you. Is there a preference between Ermine and Froyo?
Ermine(enTourage's version) is the only version of Froyo(Android 2.2) that will support this device. As far as I know there is nothing else out there like it(i.e. with both a tablet and reader in one). Some other version of Android may support the tablet but you would loose the use of the reader. Not sure what else you would loose.
In the way of explanation, The Android development group releases the core software. It can run as is on some devices but may not support everything. Depending on what a phone/tablet/whatever manufacturer adds to their device they will add drivers and other software to support those devices. EnTourage did the same for the eDGe and Pocket eDGe.
That being said, at mobileread you will find discussions on new releases of ermine. Some just add apps and are declared to be safe, and most likely are. Some are working on new versions that change the core of ermine. Using these has risks. Its your choice if you want to try and upgrade to these. Just letting you know there are options. Be sure you know the risks involved in using these. You could end up with a brick.
